With the Shawn Mendes Calvin Klein photoshoot that was released I raise you lister doing it and Jimmy having 4 hours of gay panic (I mean to be honest it doesn't have to be an underwear photoshoot any kind of lister's shots would take him to gay panic)

I read IWBFT for the "first time" a few days ago (listened to it as an audiobook a couple of years ago but I missed/had forgotten basically everything) and I've been thinking about Lister and all of this so much ever since. It really doesn't get talked about enough!

lister is just as mentally unstable as jimmy but barely anybody recognises it??? the kid has been through much and he was only 19

trigger warning: mentions of injury and suicide

- his parents divorced when he was incredibly young which severely damages a child’s mental health

- he grew up in council housing until the age of 15. for all of his childhood and adolescence he had nothing, he was so close to becoming homeless. poverty trauma is real

- he barely ever spent time with his mum because she was always at work, and he grew up sending her money constantly

- never had a group of friends until he was fourteen

- he got pushed IN FRONT OF A CAR when he was FOURTEEN years old. why does nobody talk about this

- the trust issues are so severe. he genuinely convinced himself jimmy and rowan didn’t want to be his friend, because who would want to be friends with him?

- he got addicted to alcohol and cigarettes at the age of fifteen

- had a long time crush on jimmy and couldn’t talk to anyone about it until the events of ghosted

- constantly being sexualised by fans and the media, so much so that this spouted long term insecurities

- everyone (including his own best friends) made him have a reputation of a bisexual slut, just because he ‘slept around’

- had to watch one of his closest friends get relentlessly bullied by the media

- accidentally outed his best friend and beat himself up about it for the rest of his life. the guilt never went away

- had to watch a fan violently assault one of his closest friends

- he took his best friend’s knife with the belief that he had suicidal thoughts and intentions, and then accidentally slipped down a steep slope and fell into a river, stabbing himself and breaking his leg in the process

- he felt as if he was in a continuous loop of life, stating that growing old seemed boring and he ‘wanted his rest’

there is so much more i could say but i don’t want to because i’m going to make myself and everyone else sad. iwbft is probably one of the most criminally underrated works of literature and is definitely one of alice’s darker novels.
