Summer
My smokey interior complimented by the exhaust fumes that pour from a twenty year old beater. The disgusting odor of whatever I stained my shirt with that day and the sweat marks from my night time kitchen shift. The scent of freshly cut grass with the note left on my car from the impatient neighbor. Summer at first glance.                                                                                                 Our hands together so tight they turn white. The smell of whiskey on your breath. Beer on mine. The way you give me that smile when something is bothering you and my worrisome sweaty brow when I try to guess what it is. Passion. Love. Pain. Misery. Suffering. Let’s go for another walk down to the bar. Things are easier there. Let’s put it all behind us. Things are easier there.
Summer.

Just coffee, please.
I woke up at about 10:30 today. I woke up the sound of two muffled male voices going door to door for some reason. Naturally, I pretended I was not home. I heard them go up to the top floor and greet a woman. There was only a handful of words exchanged before she slammed her door. I assumed they were door-to-door salesmen, so I opened my door to hear them out. I threw on a pair of pants and peeked my head out of my door. I thought about putting a shirt on. It was cold. I looked around for a few seconds before spotting them walking away from the apartment complex. It was sunny out that day. The sun never shines in Seattle. It mostly hides away from the world out here until the coast is clear from the clouds and rain. “Hey!” They turned around, “Hello, sir. Are you familiar with Jesus?” Oh boy, here we go. I knew I should have just pretended I wasn’t home. “Yeah, I’ve heard of him before.” My dad had always told the religious door-to-door bible thumpers to fuck off. I admire my father, but I figured these guys have had enough rejection for the day. There’s nothing wrong with believing in something, even if I find it completely ridiculous. “Do you believe in anything, sir? Do you have faith in any god?” “No, I’m not religious.” “Here’s a picture of Jesus Christ, sir.” He looked like Matthew McConaughey. Damn, good looking dude, I thought to myself. I handed the picture back to the two men. The front man of the duo was approachable. The second man looked like a creep. Hands up behind my head yawning, “Yeah, I’ve heard of him once or twice. I wasn’t raised in a religious household. Both of my parents were. They didn’t wanna force me and my siblings into it if we weren’t interested. They always assumed we would find it on our own if we really wanted to.” I always respected my parents for that. “My brotha had gone to church for a little bit.” The Massachusetts accent had showed itself along with all of my tattoos on my arms and the skull on my rib cage. “My sister and I nevah got into it.” “Well, sir, if you have some time, could you please watch this video…” They handed me a card. I wondered why they were outside in the freezing cold. “…on mormon.com?” I almost invited them in for coffee. They seemed like nice people. Or atleast the front man seemed nice enough. The second man mumbled something for a few seconds. I looked at him, smiled and nodded, but had no idea or interest in what he had said. “I’m all set, guys. Thank you.” We shook hands, and I told them to have a great day. They were decent people, and they believed in something. That’s kinda cool, I thought to myself as I went back inside. I’m gonna go home and make some eggs. This wasn’t my house. This was my friend’s house. I had spent the night, and she had gone to work early. However, I answered the door as if it were my house. I had bought some eggs a few weeks before and never made them. I wondered if they were still any good. I took a piss and rolled a cigarette before I left. It was bright out that day. The sun never shines in Seattle. I had 13 blocks to walk downhill, so I started walking. The only way to get something done is to do it. I took a left on 65th to avoid the sun hurting my eyes. I tried calling my sister to wish her a happy birthday, but she didn’t answer. Never leave the house without a pair of headphones. I put them on, and finished the Title Fight album I was listening to. After that record had finished, I was planning on listening to Saintseneca. I walked the usual route from her house to mine, a fairly decent walk. I kept thinking about those eggs. Maybe I’ll go for a breakfast burrito. Yeah, that sounds great. Throw some salsa in there. Yeah, that sounds great. I passed plenty of people with dogs next to the library. I didn’t say anything to any of them. I lit my stale cigarette and crossed over Market Street. I arrived in front of my strange home that I had moved into a few weeks prior. Guess I should probably go in, I thought to myself. It’s just so far, yuh know? Four flights of stairs, no elevator. Isn’t everything supposed to be handicapped accessible these days? I sighed and climbed the stairs anyway. 307. Big green door. Unlocked. This is where I live, I guess. There was clothes all over my floor, and it smelt like Grama’s house: peppers and onions always. My dad always said whenever you cook anything, start with an onion. I opened my fridge and took out my eggs, one of few things that actually occupied space in my tiny cooling unit. Cracked three eegs, two cap fulls of milk. Salt. Pepper. This was gonna be so good. I put the bowl in the fridge, so it wouldn’t go bad from sitting out. Grabbed the pepper and onion I had been chomping on for the past couple weeks. This was gonna be good. I cut them both up in tiny pieces. That way, they would cook better, yuh know? At this point, it was ready. It just had to be cooked. I grabbed the bowl of eggs in one hand and the plate of peppers and onions in the other hand and headed for the door. I live in a cave. There is no kitchen in my apartment. I share it at the end of the hallway with the other strangers that live on my floor. Weird. Wait. What are you doing? You need butter for the skillet, asshole. I reassessed the situation. I would need one hand to open and lock the door when I went to the kitchen. Reassessing. Butter in left hand. Eggs on top of butter. Plate of peppers and onions on top of that. I stood there for a second. I can do this. Keys in right hand. Approach green door. All is well. Open green door. Okay. Now the fucking plate with all the peppers and onion that I had cut is all over the floor. Fuck. It’s cool. I’ll just use salsa. That already has onions and peppers in it anyways, right? Good idea. That sounds good. Reassessing. I put the eggs and butter back in the fridge so they wouldn't go bad from siting out. I peeled the onions and peppers off of my tiled floor and off of the carpet in the hallway. Well that sucked. It’s cool. I have salsa. Reassessing. I took the butter and eggs from the fridge again. Take two. Eggs on top of butter, left hand. Keys, right hand. Approach door. Open door. S’all good. Step into hallway, lock door. S’all good. In kitchen, stove on, butter in skillet. S’all good. You know, these eggs are kinda a funny color, aren’t they? You know what else? For three scrambled eggs and some milk, there’s not much here, don't you think? Whatever. I’m gonna eat this shit anyways. I ran back to my room to grab a plate to throw these eggs on. I couldn’t put em back into the same bowl that I whipped them in. Eggs done. Weird color. S’all good. Breakfast burritos. Eggs done. Butter, bowl, plate of eggs, left hand. Keys, right hand. Leave kitchen. Big green 307 door. Door open. Inside. S’all good. Everything's laid out now. Eggs, tortillas. Wait. What are you doing, asshole? You need another plate for the tortilla. True. I should probably set up my cabinet differently. The bowls are on top. There’s stupid little plates that I never use underneath the bowls. The paper plates are underneath that, and the real plates are underneath all of that. I didn’t feel like moving everything around. I can get one of those paper plates without breaking everything. Everything almost broke. Caught the bowls. Caught the stupid little plates I never use. The paper plate I had been trying to get fell to the counter top. Well atleast I didn’t break anything. I could feel something soft and warm and moist seeping through the top of shoe. What the fuck is that? I guess I’ll just have coffee and a few cigarettes today.
