very few knew about his leaving idris for new york, where he had been hiding out in for just over six months, in an effort to help with new shadowhunters there and be closer to his family now that they had been placed there permanently. however, he had been reassigned and the news that shadowhunters were being killed troubled him a great deal. what if blair had been next, or one of her family? he couldn’t live with the knowledge he hadn’t at least been there to help her out however she needed, and now he was here, overseeing tracker injections and still yet to actually go see his ex. a voice brought him out of his reverie, lifting his gaze with a curious expression, “were you saying something?”

“ not at all, i was clearly just talking to myself for the sake of my own amusement. ” dark hues rolled to the ceiling as luciana looked up from the book she’d been reading over, sat firmly in one of the many random chairs that littered about the institute. she’d known that there was a handful of shadowhunters reassigned to the institute as a result of the brewing war, a gesture that luciana didn’t fully appreciate it. she understood it, sure, knowing that they wanted to be fully prepared should things happen to go awry, but to the brunette, it seemed more like a lack of faith and confidence in those who called the manhattan institute home and that was a slight that luciana would never quite be able to take lightly. “ i asked how long you’ve been back for. ”

bars weren’t something maverick sought out often; they were always incredibly filthy for the fae. there was only so much nastiness he could take before having to leave the premises to douse himself in sanitizer. as luck would have it, and it often did work in his favor, he found himself in a clean one. sitting upon one of the many bar stools twiddling idly with a straw when he realize someone had graced him with their presence. “charming, but yes. since you’re offering so kindly.” they weren’t going to turn down a drink that was freely offered to them especially from such an attractive person.

“ that’s what i love to hear. ” the smirk across teddy’s lips grew, as he glanced away from the man for a moment to flag down the bartender. it wasn’t as often as he’d like that that sort of gesture worked off the bat with little resistance, and given his current company, he was certainly thankful that it did. “ i’ll have another jack and coke, ” he offered the bartender a small smile. “ and i’m not quite sure what my friend here is having just yet. ” he glanced over at the male, curious as to what the drink of choice would be.

“ i know. ”    fleur was comfortable where she was today ; a stable working environment, in a pack        she had a place where she belonged. but she did miss the walls of the INSTITUTE. she missed training, despite her being atrocious. her soft heart and her inability to hurt another being her greatest downfall. but just like everything she had lost, she missed it. But despite the somber thoughts, she was able to push through them and offer a smile at her friend. “ funny enough, i would. you always knew me better than anyone else. ” that was no lie. more often than never, people didn’t bother talking to her if it wasn’t followed by a file slammed onto the examination table. “ we’re going through dark times. you’re doing the best you can, and whoever is doing this will get caught. i can feel it. ”

“ yeah? i’d say the same for you. ” a small smile crossed the shadowhunter’s lips. “ i mean, after all, someone had to help blair and i keep all of those teenagers in line. by the angel, i swear, i never want to help another shadowhunter deal with training and puberty simultaneously. ” luciana faked a shudder at the thought, laughing at the memories. they seemed so distant now, especially given how much had changed. of all the things that being a part of her world entailed, the lack of stability would always be what got to her. “ i hope you’re right, fleur. i really do. i don’t want this to get any messier than it has to, you know? but i also have a really bad feeling that it will. ”

                                jun grimaced , leaning back in his seat. “ so basically my options are to be stressed about what’s on the news && be worried whenever i leave my apartment , or have absolutely no idea about anything that’s going on. i gotta say , neither sounds like a very good option. ”

“ sounds about right, yeah, ” teddy agreed, a light laugh passing his lips as he tore his eyes from the program on his laptop screen once more. “ i suppose you could try to find a nice halfway point to shoot for, though. worth a shot, isn’t it? ”

“ last i checked, it was a downworlder that killed a shadowhunter first. ” luciana shrugged, leaning back against the barstool, arms crossed over her chest.

“Oh, are you supposing that I may lose my vision? My words aren’t cruel nor do they seem to be a reason someone would attack me. I cannot say people can’t hold it to themselves, some are crazy.” Much like he, but Aleksander was not going to attack until the perfect moment. Aleksander sensed an ounce of hope in the woman. He knew it was easily to gain sympathy from downworlders, they were always more accommodating to the argument about their freedom. The Shadowhunters did not help themselves, they sought out the downworlders with chains and whips. “Such a shame we cannot fully act out. Some say it is a horrible thought to revolt, but I value my freedom and security. Who knows what they would do to a vampire, kill me no doubt. They have more use for you alive, but not me. What does your kind fancy? Life or death?”

“ i would never imply such a thing, ” the seelie queen smirked, relaxing back into the comfort of a chair. “ i’m just suggesting you be careful, that’s all. ” a strange sentiment coming from the woman who often preferred chaos, that much was for certain. “ isn’t it, though? the angels they believe in help the nephilim that tries to put one of those trackers in my neck. i’ll spend hours with a clave official before i let them try such a thing. ” and that much was for certain. eidothea was not about to be the type that simply rolled over and became a pawn for the clave, an object to be bound and chained, followed and used as they would. “ my kind does not fancy unnecessary death and bloodshed from any living thing. however, my kind also fancies being on the winning side of things and often those two desires cannot be mutually exclusive. ”

how teegan had wound up in the quaint little bar was STILL a mystery to her. however, she had remained seated upon the bar for a short period of time now— nursing a beverage her overly strict father wouldn’t be too appreciating of. dark eyes are suddenly drawn toward a male whom had taken it upon himself to sit next to her, already a suspicious brow raised at his greeting. paranoia shines through as before even responding to the stranger, teegan glances over her shoulder and at her surroundings, still a perplexed expression playing on her features as she turns back to him. “save your cash— i’m finished after this anyway.” nimble fingers locking around her glass once more, the ice inside it clinks as she gestures toward it.

teddy wasn’t exactly a stranger to being shot down when he made the offer in bars, knowing that there was a whole slew of people who much preferred to be left alone. usually, he took such rejections in stride, brushing it off and ordering himself another drink before he went back to what he was doing just beforehand, but there was something about this particular circumstance that had him intrigued. “ i mean, the offer could also go for a soda or a juice or something along those lines. ” he shrugged, flagging down the bartender, glancing over at the female once more.

the female’s teasings manage to earn a soft, breathy laugh to escape teegan— head shaking in the process. “the same person as YOU, i’m guessing.” dark eyes showing a glint of mischief as she returns her own teasing statement toward luciana. “in that case, i should’ve made sure to bring my tracker device.” the offhanded comment made while she continued to scan the building curiously. “it’s likely that whatever was going on here has long moved out, either that— or someone was trying to set us up. which, if that was the case it’s taking an awful long time for whatever plan was supposed to occur to actually happen.” stalking across the molded wooden flooring, teegan begins to approach a stairwell, dark wisps of brunette locks shifting as she turns back to her companion. “have you already been up here?”

“ so the clave as a whole then, ” luciana laughed, a certain hint of nervousness to her tone as she ran her fingers through the brunette curls that cascaded down her back. she should have pulled it up and she knew it, but there was something about the building that seemed altogether underwhelming to the shadowhunter, as familiar as it was. “ my bet’s on the former. it’s too close to the institute for someone to risk setting someone up here. by the time they’d be able to accomplish much of anything, they’d have a handful more shadowhunters on top of them. it’d take a fool to risk it. ” granted, she’d once believed it would take a fool to kill a shadowhunter in cold blood and yet there they were in the midsts of a near war. “ today? no, ” she replied with a shake of her head. “ i have, however, made use of the privacy for other reasons on a desperate occasion or two, though. ”

blair scoffed, her focus moved towards a small spot on the wall at the thought of maisie. it was still a sensitive subject for her, coming to terms with her sexuality. even with her parabatai, it was still odd talking about it. “            let’s see where those thirty minutes lead. if the alcohol is enjoyable, of course i’ll throw back as many as i can.”

“ then i know just the spot. ” there was a devious glint in luciana’s eyes, only excenuated by the devilish smirk that was tugging at the corner of her lips. she made it a point to lead her parabatai out of the institute as quickly and covertly as possible, not wanting anyone to come to her with something altogether too pressing. once they hit the streets, however, all bets were off and luciana was fully prepared to have a little bit of fun. “ it’s just up and around the corner here. we won’t be long at all, i promise. ”

Leaning forward, Felix turned to stare interestedly at the man - an exceptionally attractive man - who’d sat down next to someone else at the bar, obviously trying to make a suave move. Oh, and that smirk, that was just unfair. “You can buy me a drink,” Felix said, not caring that he had not particularly been invited into the conversation, his voice carrying across the bar. “If you’re looking for takers.”

although the voice that called out to teddy didn’t belong to the person he’d initially extended the offer to, the dark haired man couldn’t say that he was entirely opposed to the change of pace. “ well, since they don’t seem at all interested, why not? ” he smirked, pushing himself up from the bar, whispering a short but snarky “ your loss, sweetheart, ” as he stood up, making himself comfortable next to the male. “ what are you drinking? ”

“I’m fine with shadowhunters. As long as they leave me alone.” Were there others who wanted to wipe the shadowhunters out? Well, sure. But only because they were currently being annoying. “Unless they’re paying me, then they can bother me all they want,” Felix added, before sighing airily. "Besides, is the Institute really all that great? You look…” He gave her a brief once-over. “…Decently competent. You could find something much better to do with your time. Something much less violent and invasive. Just think about it. All the peace you could have if you simply… took off. I highly recommend it. Works wonders.” He nodded. “Otherwise, it’s a good thing you’re looking forward to the challenge. I, personally, will be making it as difficult as possible for you all. An annoyance-for-an-annoyance, as it were.” 

“ well, you know, just oblige us on the tracker and don’t do anything particularly idiotic afterward and we’ll do just that. it’s not really that difficult of a concept, ” luciana conceded, another sigh passing her lips. this had become more difficult than she expected, more difficult than she presently wanted to deal with. “ and i’m sure if you seem more cooperative, you’re one of the first the institute would think of pairing with and thus paying for their services, so, you know, it’s something to consider. ” though that was nearly making a promise that she couldn’t keep. “ unfortunately, i can’t exactly just go rogue, you know. the clave generally tends to frown upon that. ” and it was true, no matter how much luciana wanted to believe otherwise. she was, after all, just another pawn in the clave’s overall game. “ i’m so glad to hear we’re on the same page there. it’ll make all of this that much more interesting. ”

                        “ every time i try to watch the news , it’s the same depressing thing. maybe i should just give up trying to watch it at all. ”  his fingers tapped impatiently on his laptop’s keyboard , random letters appearing on the word document in response. he sighed , knowing he wasn’t making any progress with his essay.

“ not the worst decision you could make, ” teddy agreed, briefly glancing up from his own laptop, lines of code strewn across the screen. “ i mean, i’m not one for the whole ignorance is bliss kind of lifestyle, but i can see the appeal to it. ”

“i’m just so fucking sick of it,” ophelia groaned, leaning forward on the bar until her forehead hit the surface with a small thud. the place was nearly empty, leaving her feeling comfortable enough to talk to anyone as loudly as she wanted to. “my job and my sister and the god damn cla–” she cut herself off, unable to say a word against the clave, even while drunk. sitting up, she poured herself another shot and threw it back, relishing the burn as it went down. “nobody listens to me. why can’t anyone just listen?”

“ well, judging by the way your voice has definitely raised several decibels in the past half an hour, i’m pretty sure none of us have exactly been given a choice, ophelia. ” luciana reminded, a certain level of annoyance to her tone, but still as civil as she could manage for the evening, a few drinks in herself. “ this is your life, though, whether or you like it or not. unless you intend on deruning or something else equally as drastic anytime soon, i’m pretty sure this is what you’re stuck with. ” because, for better or for worse, whether she was right or wrong, luciana would always be there to come to the defense of her parabatai.

“ — no. you need my permission and you don’t have it.” aline stared down the nephilim, contraption used to inject the tracker clear in their hand. “i don’t remember agreeing to this at all, you’re all going to end up badly injured formthese assumptions that you have this power over us. you can leave.” 

“ it’s either the tracker or you can come in for questioning from people who are going to be much less friendly about this than i am. ” luciana’s arms were crossed firmly across her chest, a deep sigh escaping her lips. “ is that a threat? ” the shadowhunter inquired, her tone sharper than initially intended. “ listen. i don’t want to deal with your bullshit, you don’t want to deal with mine and as a result, you certainly won’t want to deal with the clave’s. why can’t you just make this a little easier on all of us? ”
