Gilbert took his hand almost immediately, hoisting him up to his feet and maneuvering him onto his back with far more ease than he liked to think about (had he always been so fragile?) Gilbert had never seen him as anything other than strong, after all it was Break who’d been the one to keep him moving forward, to keep Gil on track when all he wanted to do was give up-

He was supposed to be powerful, and Gilbert refused to see him as anything else…even as he grabbed the other’s arms and draped them over his shoulders so he was a bit more secure, and proceeded to carry the other outside the building they were in. It was a long way to where they’d left the carriage waiting, they hadn’t planned on having to track the contractor out this far, which meant a rather long and awkward walk back.

“You shouldn’t have used your chain so much, you know.” He mumbled, mostly to fill the silence as they walked back along the road. “If things are getting this bad I could have handled it on my own.”

          Humiliating is what it was! Being carried around and scolded like a petulant child...my goodness, now that he thought about it, a lot of people liked to scold him, didn’t they? He sighed, shakily, mind slightly numb as he focused his attention on the feel of Gilbert’s movements as he walked; the fact that there was very little effort was somewhat alarming. Just how much weight had he lost in recent weeks anyway?

          “I know, I know,” he muttered in response, feeling sufficiently chided but having no intention of accepting it. If he needed to use Mad Hatter, he damn well would! These were not the days to keep still and bide time, it was getting close to the climax and they needed to ACT. “But we hardly have the luxury of being careful, do we? Not with the Baskervilles getting so close to obtaining their goal.”

          Did he honestly believed that candy fixes everything? No, of course not, but it certainly does cause a moment of happiness and distraction, maybe just enough to tear one’s mind off of their problem for a slight time, allowing them to refocus. Or, in the case of Gilbert, showing a little bare eyesocket...but he hoped it wouldn’t come to that.

          “Yes, yes, anytime!” His voice is cheerful, a blatant cover for his more concerned mind. Something was off about this child, it reminded him a lot of how Gilbert had acted when Oz was first dragged into the Abyss, as if one single goal was all that existed and the rest of the world was nothing. And wasn’t he just particularly familiar with that? “You seemed as if you could use a little pick me up.”

          Pressing slightly for information, but not outwardly asking. If Leo wished to talk, he would.
