He is an accomplished singer/songwriter and producer. His songs are passionate, and there is both a beauty and brokenness in his voice and music.

As I continue with the Sunday ritual #gospelbrunch I thought I’d highlight the music of #keithgreen in particular the #theprodigalson record. #green is widely regarded, as the father of modern Christian music. He was both an accomplished singer/songwriter and “world class” pianist. Above all he was a great heart and on fire with a passionate message, that bleeds through his music.

So many great gospel songs on this record, but I thought I’d highlight 3 of which still move me to this day...

So many great compositions on this record. I’ll highlight a handful that shine for me...

#bettergitinyoursoul is very #gospel infused and was written by #mingus as he reflected on the gospel singing and the cadence of the preachers of the days of his youth. #goodbyeporkpiehat was written in honor of #saxophone great #lesteryoung

#boogiestopshuffle is an interesting 12 bar-blues. #selfportraitinthreecolors was written (and never used) for the actor/director #johncassavetes for his film #shadows

Then there is a tribute to #dukeellington titled #openlettertoduke

#jellyroll is a tribute to #jazzlegend #pianist #jellyrollmorton

#birdcalls was written specifically to mimic (by the saxophone) the sound of birds, and not as tribute to #charlieparker #bird

#fablesorfaubus was written as a social commentary about the #littlerockcrisis and #segregation

The album was released in the Fall of 1959.

#ravishankar was an #indian musician and #composer who helped introduce the sounds of the #sitar to musicians around the globe #thebyrds #thebeatles #therollingstones #theanimals among others.

In 1967 #shankar performed at the #montereypopfestival and in 1969 at the #woodstockfestival also in 1971 at the #concertforbangladesh that #georgeharrison organized.

#oliviaharrison (wife of George) said...”When George heard Indian music, that really was the trigger, it was like a bell that went off in his head.”

#ravi was nominated in 1982 for an #academyaward #bestoriginalmusicscore for the #film #gandhi

Pre- #covid19 ...I wandered into a local #vinyl shop (record store) here in #houstontexas and happened upon this gem.

#supersession from #mikebloomfield #alkooper and #stephenstills

The record was conceived by #kooper #bloomfield plays on side 1, and #stills plays on side 2. The two guitarists do not play together on this record. However, both are featured as well as musicians #barrygoldberg on electric piano; #harveybrooks on bass; #eddiehoh drums and percussion; horn arrangements by Kooper and #joescott

This record paved the way for the #supergroup concept that various bands would follow such as... #blindfaith #CSN among others. Also was the first #jamband type record of its kind.
