What especially scares Petra the most is the fact she can very easily see herself in both perspectives. In Xara's place, She can imagine running towards Romeo, sword in hand with no regard for her own safety. She can imagine Romeo using his powers to lift her up... Imagine every painful second of her windpipe blocked and her lungs demanding air in desperation... And her final moments staring into the man wearing Jesse's face, using his voice and twisting it into something corrupted and wrong "Give my regards to your friends."

In Romeo's place, she can imagine herself killing Jesse, her closest friend, in cold blood, turning her back on everyone she ever cared about, even if her own reputation would be forever ruined. She still doesn't know if Romeo killed Fred on purpose or by accident but she doesn't care. The image still stands, as clear as glass, and she feels like a monster for it.

As Petra gazes down at her gauntlet, it's such a clear image. It's almost as though it could have actually been her instead... And with the path she was close to, she could have...

Inside Jack's ransacked map shop, another place ruined because of her Romeo, Petra is silent. Everyone is. They can't find the words.

"I can't believe Jesse just did that..." Olivia finally speaks up.

The fury that has been simmering in the pot, damn near overflowed. "That was. not. Jesse..." She wants to shout, but her words left in a low growl. Some part of her, still furious, desperately wanted to attack Olivia for so much as believing Jesse would ever do such a thing, but then the image of staring into Jesse's eyes while the warrior is in Romeo's place flickers and she's still once more.

"That... wasn't Jesse..." Petra repeats, shivering...

Romeo must pay, but She has to be smart about this now... Running towards Romeo, out in the open is a guaranteed death sentence, and knowing him, simply being spotted now can also lead to an untimely end. The book she found, the word of passage... The weapon Fred created, that's her last hope now.

The next chapter of Summer by Summer is out. I wrote a little over 3k today. This might be the fastest I’ve ever written—I already have almost 17k written and I just posted like 4 chapters in a week.

i know it's been said before but IMAGINE being in the apex while book 3 is happening. you boarded this terrifying liminal mode of transport that you can't leave with a permanent mark on your hand that was not there before and the only people offering an explanation for what's going on are these two older passengers who act like their word is god even tho they're like 17. and because they're the oldest in the group and are also incredibly close to each other, they're the closest thing you and the other kids have to parental figures in this hellscape. and then later down the line they disappear for like a week and everybody probably makes jokes about how they just needed "alone time ;)" with each other except by the time one of them reappears they have apparently gone through the world's fastest divorce-catalysed-by-having-a-child except not yet because you are suddenly the extremely questionable divorce lawyer of your terrible terrible father figure because he's tasking you to kill your terrible terrible mother figure for him. like half of these kids probably have issues with their real parents anyway and now they have Parental Issues 2: Electric Boogaloo AND the explanation they had for being on the train isn't even real anymore.

simon's crush on grace is sort of a horror aspect of book 3. like, it's just in the background - neither simon nor grace acknowledge it though i think they are both aware of it. and there's nothing inherently wrong with him having feelings for her, of course, but it so clearly informs everything about his perception of her. his idolisation of her, his willingness to fall in line behind her - and then, conversely, his entitlement to her mind, and her body, and this grating sense that he thinks she owes him something - owes him her secrets, owes him her undivided attention, owes it to him to feel the same way he does. he doesn't see denizens as people, and really as the story goes on you realise he doesn't see anyone as a person, grace included. and his crush is the centrepiece of that, explaining how he can have a sort of reverant attraction to and admiration of her, yet still dehumanise and reduce her personhood to what best serves him. and, there's also the fact that it's always horrifying as a teenaged girl to find you the guy whose friendship you value does not value/respect you in the same way because he's preoccupied with fantasies of dating you.

I’ve seen a lot of good pairings in animation in the past, either platonic or romantic, but as a newcomer to the fantastic show that is Infinity Train, I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a pair that worked as well together as MT and Jesse. And the reason for that is that, unlike other pairs of characters who are just fun together, these two complement and enrich one another. MT is given someone in her life that helps her to realise that not everyone is out to get her. There are people who can be good to her and want to help her. And as for Jesse, he sees MT, this person who wants nothing more than to stand as themselves, and learns to not be as much of a pushover as he once was.

It’s rare that I’m this engaged by the connection between two characters, but damn it if all those Infinity Train fans weren’t right on the money with how great this show as. And yeah, you can take this as a confession on my part for Cracked Reflection being my favourite season of the show 😊
