Long before the introduction of color film, a Russian chemist and photographer named Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky used an innovative technique. He took three individual black and white photos, each through a colored filter (red, green, and blue), to create fully colored, high-quality pictures. The photo of this woman, taken by him, is around 107 years old!

This quote from Fowler has been on my mind for a week or more and I only found time to research it now. I thought for sure, this was something I'd have learned about, being British and learning about the Royal family and the Tudors in particular being one of those things that British kids learn about.

I was in secondary school in the 2000s so it might've changed since, but we never learned about the Irish famines or the Nine Years War. Considering I'd already checked that guns existed in Japan in the stated time frame and that the borders were closed by the shogun, I figured this was based in reality, but maybe with an artistic exaggeration.

Turns out it's not. Like, it's not even close to exaggeration.

Certain this has been said before, but I’m convinced Madam Kaji knows Mizu is a woman / perhaps thinks Mizu is trans (even if there was no word for it). We saw that she was comfortable and very familiar with the concept of homosexuality - male prostitutes at her brothel, talking about some men preferring the stamen to the pistil - so it’s no great leap to think she’s familiar with crossdressing / transness / genderqueerness. Queer sexuality and queer gender go hand in hand, both now and throughout human history. 

There’s a brief moment in the last episode where she says something like, ‘the guards won’t like you being in the women’s quarters.’ As opposed to, ‘you shouldn’t be in the women’s quarters’, ‘you aren’t allowed here,’ etc. I think she constantly demonstrates a subtle recognition of Mizu’s difference. ‘You’re more man than any that have come through my door.’ 

She can probably recognise it in others easily, while other people - so entrenched in social mores - can’t see what’s in front of them, because how on earth could a woman possibly get away with disguising herself as a man? Because they see men and women as so essentially, fundamentally different from one another. Kaji is more used to seeing cultural lines be blurred.

thinking about mizu from blue eye samurai. thinking. thinking so much. thinking about how mizu operates outside of gender. like we joke about her gender being revenge but straight up? it literally is. like she grew up as a boy and is most comfortable being a man, but behind that is the feeling of betraying himself because he isn't being honest about who he is and he lives in fear of being discovered. and when he lived as a woman, she found joy there as well. she fell in love, and though she wasn't good at it, she liked being a wife and enjoying a simple life. but in that life too, she isn't being honest about who she is. and when she reveals her true self, it's not a woman, she's a demon, a weapon. she's to masculine to be a woman, and too feminine to be a man. ultimately, mizu is most comfortable when they are being a murder machine. that's when they feel they are being the most true to themself. like a sword, they are neither man nor woman, but a blend of both, which makes them stronger.
