re imagining
I had a think about my Project and how i could reimagine it after seeing these more contemporary artists references. I thought back to the original idea of my work and what it came from.
without considering the origin of my work i thought about how i could expand apon the idea of my big robot characters. In the same vein of work as the Meat suit i could have built my characters into large wearable mascot style characters and actually have them fight in a cool performance piece.
when i considered my original concept and ideas i come up with something completely different. More in the vein of the neuro painting robot. i thought up this puzzle that would require user participation. the audience would have to fit people onto the earth puzzle but slowly as time went on the earth would become inhospitable. And our audience would have to shuffle people around and cram them all into remaining cities. this is supposed to highlight the way that land is baught up used and destroyed my mojor companies who turn a massive profit at the risk of our own planet. and how i feel we will soon be running out of space on our dear world.

Brainwave Painting
Simon Ingram has a robot that reads your brain waves and makes paintings. He uses a EEG headset to relay information from his brain to a robot that then moves around and does paintings. when his show was on in the city gallery he allowed audiences to try on the headset. I feel like this artwork is more about the paintings than the robot itself. because the paintings are i guess a true reflection of emotion, and that is more impressive than simply a robot that makes paintings. although the robot is just following a program that interprets brainwaves. so i guess the paintings are really crafted by Simon himself. none the less this is an interesting piece but i feel it has little relevance to my own practices.

Probably Illegal
Mark Pauline makes robots. And maybe i could make robots too but I don't feel comfortable stealing military tech from scrap yards. But this guy seem fine with it. His artwork is crazy and chaotic. he just builds nasty lookin robots that could kill people Mark has alot of artworks and i wont talk about any in particular but more about just the general idea of what he does.
So his shows are pretty insane. Basically what he does is he rolls out a bunch or robots and they just go nuts. sometimes they just make loud noises and move around violently. other times they shoot fire or projectiles. sometimes they are grabbling and crushing weird lookin human robot doll things. His goal it to amaze and scare people, and maybe he watched the animatrix one too many times and just decided that kick ass robot violence was his thing.
I feel like his practice and ideas are pretty similar to mine. But ti would be Hard for me to pull off something of the same scale. i could have definitely made models of my work but o don't think i could have made anything that actually moved. but the idea of watching mechanical chaos ensue in the most awesome way is super in line with what my work could have been had i pushed it much further.

Meat Man
That's not actually what its called. The artwork is called Zhang Huan in a suit made of raw meat( i think ). The artwork itself is a performance piece made and performed by Zhang Huan, where he comes out and does some stuff while wearing a suit made or raw animal meat. the suit makes him look super muscular. Zhang himself is a pretty skinny guy so the suit is like a perverse extension of himself.
In the performance Zhang would be brought out of the museum by six men holding him on a white palanquin, He would be placed down and then given a dove, After that Zhang would distribute doves around the crowd allowing them to take part in the performance.
I personally struggled to find meaning in this performance. its not that it was bad or not interesting, it was just a little beyond me. Apparently the artwork is supposed to be about how humans tend to take on animalistic traits and qualities when trying to reach our goals.
i guess i could work this into my work somehow. fighting is an animalistic trait that some of us take part in. my big planet men were no exception.

Cant Help Myself
Cant help myself is a sad robot tasked with cleaning a room filled with red liquid that constantly flows away from itself. This task is impossible. It was made by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu. The robot just sweeps away eternally with no Success. the red liquid is un comfortably similar to blood.
This artwork was supposed to explore the idea that we live in an world where technology is key. we are always using technology and in some ways technology is using us. the red liquid could be people being swept back and kept within their ideological cliques by hidden algorithms.
Or the machine could even be a representation of major companies trying to claim resources or even smaller companies for themselves. such is the way of aggressive capitalism. this second idea is far more in line with my artwork. where companies have taken over entire planets where they own everything without competition. until another company comes along.
It would be cool to see a second robot along side the original cant help myself. but the second robot is trying to sweep up its own pool of liquid. and without aiding each other they would great a great big mess.

layering photography
Tumblr media
for this image i had the idea to layer in photos of earth and mars. i showed it to a few friends who did digital art and they all said they liked the way i had mixed very cartoon pop styles with very high detail photography. so i decided to do this for my final. i thin kit looks better than me trying to draw a planet anyway.

digital work 2
SO i started planning more work. these sketches are super faint because they were drawn using a 4H pencil. this plan was meant to represent a small 3 panel comic but i decided i would just work on a single work given how long it takes me to complete digital art.
Tumblr media
the first one here (below) was by far my favorite sketch. by this point i have started to use real drawings that i have photocopied into my drawing program. this has been working really well for me. i have alos been watching some digital art tutorials online which have been helping alot.
this image here is supposed to be mars destroying earth as he is hungry for resources.
Tumblr media
this was my next favorite (below). this scene was supposed to depict robot mars arguing with robot earth over ownership rights on Jupiter's gas reservoirs. it was a cool concept but i scrapped it because i felt the previous one worked better on its own

The Remakery
In todays lecture we had a lady come in and tell us about her time around the world. She liked to find things that were a combination of manmade and natural work. And often the objects she documented were repurposed items. The coolest thing she showed us was some photography of an old shack that was sitting in the middle of tokyo (i think). Anyway it was made out of lots of old rotting bits of wood all held together with string and nails it was quite cool as it looked super rustic and cobbled together. It was a really interesting lecture.

Jacob Hina
Tumblr media
this is art by Jacob Hina. he seems pretty elusive on the internet but i have some art by him in one of the white cloud worlds art books. I have been inspired because his art seems like a far more approachable style of digital art and i have began using him as a massive inspiration to my work.
Tumblr media
here are my practice works i created using Jacob Hina as an art reference. i set up these pages on a book stand next to my computer and looked at his art alot while i drew.

this week i started looking more into digital art and robot art. here are some of the things i looked at.
Tumblr media
this is a page of art in the book Nothin But Mech. i picked up this book last year from Gordon Harris and it has proved quite handy in drawing robot art. the thing i struggle most with is drawing the joints between the larger blocky structures that make up robots. i like this page because it shows that you can sort of throw anything in there as long as it looks mildly complicated, and it works pretty nicley. These were drawn by Ian McQue. i really like his art. ill do an artist reference post about him soon.
these next pages are by christian pearce. i think i have mentioned him before. he did the robot designs for giant killer robots. i like his imagination. the painting of the tanks standing off against the giant coconut crabs really grabs my attention and has ad heavy influence in the way i think and create art. im allwasy looking to draw something different and wild.
Tumblr media
there is a very organic feel to how he draws mechs and tanks. for example when i draw a join or an arm ill do a block and then a cog or giro looking thing at the joint. when pearce draws he draws them like they have muscles and bones. it feels very fantastical and designery. i hope i can tap into that sort of thing with my own work

Going digital
when we came close to the mid semester crit it came to my attention that our artwork needed to be moved into a gallery space somewhere else on the campus. obviously i couldn't do that as i had painted straight onto the wall.
my solution was to scan the draft of my artwork and redraw it digitally. after i had done that i printed it out on A0 poster paper. this worked quite well and i think i got a good response during the crit.
it wasn't easy however. digital art is something im not too familiar with. it took me a really long time to redraw largely due to my lack of understanding with the software i was using (krita). so i looked up some you tube tutorials on how to create digital brushes and did some line work practice and after a few days i felt confident enough to redraw my robot. this was the result.
Tumblr media
after i had redrawn the wok i decided to colour it. i wanted to do basic 3 colour digital shading but i didn’t really have enough time so i just ended up putting in all the basic colours. the moon that our planet is holding is almost fully shaded and i am quite happy with it.

Moving to wall art
after a crit with the rest of the class i chose this drawing from my previous works People really wanted to see it huge so i went big. Maybe too big this is about 3 miters tall. i hope to give it very vibrant bold pop art colours.

More art
here we can look at some of the developments i made with my planet man art work.
Tumblr media
This one was meant to be mars stabbing earth in the back with a giant chainsaw splitting him in three. I didn't come up with this, my friend fred told me to draw it when he saw my other work.
Tumblr media
This piece was inspired by Jeff Kendals atomic man skateboard. i really liked it but never really developed it any further

Planet killers
Tumblr media
this was the first drawing i did for art studio this semester. im pretty sure the idea for this came into my head after playing the video game sludge life. sludge life is a indie game where you play as a tagger called ghost. the game doesn't really have a goal. you sort of just roam around and look at stuff while doing tagging.
Tumblr media
(art from sludge life)
so i went through the brief phase of doing very funky graffiti style characters in my spare time. and this bled into my art studio work along with my new environmentalist outlook from listening to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
I hope to adopt this style for digital art but im not sure how hard that will be.
