Telltale
By Cameryn V.
A whisper at the back of your recommended page,
Merely another long-winded video with a man or a woman with a serious tone,
You think ‘oh this again.’ As you move onto the next material entertaining enough to hold your attention.
Has the media desensitised you to violence?
Has it told the story again, and again, so much so that it becomes boring to you?
To the point where it’s become another footnote in their history,
Another cautionary tale that you’d never experience.
50,000 dead is just another number.
We’ve made jokes about pieces of text in a media sharing platform being statistics,
so much so that we treat actual numbers just like that, a statistic.
The words no longer mean anything to you,
They no longer make you cry,
Make you feel,
So you forget all about them.
‘Pity them’, ‘Those poor children’, ‘Those poor people’. People talk about hearing tragedy while they’re in school or at work,
Throwing sympathetic words like they’re to be expected of one discussing this ‘topic’.
Is it just a ‘topic’ to you now?
Just another chore for you to boost every single piece of media you see regarding the ‘event’, purely because it is what you should do? Well, yes. As long as the stories and tales are being told over, and over, and over again.
There are people who will act in order to bring the news to the forefront, to force those in their ivory towers to do something about those currently facing death.
Make it a habit, and keep yourself aware. Talk about it, share the tale.
As long as it is spoken, no one can ignore that it is happening.
Do not bury the news six feet under,
Keep it alive, again and again.
Tell the tale, again and again.

Intro and Breakdown
Call me Cameryn! I'm an amateur novelist, a slam poetry enthusiast and budding baby activist advocating for human rights.
This particular blog will be where I post my works and writing, I'm planning a novel trilogy with themes akin to this as well.
I'll be discussing a lot of different themes and topics on this blog including but not limited to: Racism, Sexism, Classism, Power dynamics, Politics, Literature, Ableism, Relationships, Philosophy, Human Behaviour.
If any of these interest you, give me a follow! I'd love for people to give me ideas and critisism on my characters and writing, and to use this account as a safe space to stay aware on the current world issues and discuss them.
My Novel
I'll be writing a trilogy called the Moonrise. Book 1 is called 'Bane of Light' and it is a superhero YA novel series focusing on societal trauma and the process of healing. Its biggest themes are apathy, media and ignorance, classism and power imbalances.
Featuring 5 main protagonists: Erryn Xin Ai Ning, Dmitri Antolov, Xenon Bluzokil, Sidra Xirelle, and Yumehara Tanaka.
This is a plot summary I wrote for my friends' understandings:
Context: It's in a contemporary world where everyone has superpowers, called Abilities. Heroes are licensed and go through exams and the sort to become a hero, treated more like a first responder, really. And most villains can really be classified simply as criminals who use their Abilities to help their work.
That's to say. My story is focused on a 'young villains rehab programme' that takes place in an international and prestigious hero school called Solaria Academy. It's a story that has its main themes rooted in trauma, found family, complicated relationships and people, and growing up in bad environments. It highlights things like flaws in the system, about the grey spectrum of morality, about the complicated nature of human beings. Most of this being told through actions and events in the story.
And a snippet of a concept:
Chapter 1
"Dmitri Antolov, you are being accused of being involved in organised crime, manslaughter, trafficking of substances, and other such charges. Do you feel remorse for what you have done?"
"Well, not really, if I had to give an answer."
Indignant. That was what it was, Dmitri felt his nails dig sharply into his palms, the lingering taste of bitter anger washing down the back of his throat as he feigned nonchalance.
The individual in front of him radiated power, the kind that spoke of privilege and a lifetime of walking under the sun that he never once felt the gentle rays of in his life; fortune favours the fortunate, in-fucking-deed.
'Shimmer', the guard called this individual, someone who glimmers underneath the light, but never shines. He chuckled to himself, what an amusing alias.
"... Dmitri. Can I call you that? I choose to talk to you for a reason," 'Shimmer' pressed what appeared to be a thin file towards him. "I want to give you a chance, one I don't believe anyone else has ever given you before."
A chance? To what? Frolic amongst the heavenly doves above the surface ground, past the muck and dirt of home?
"I want to give you a chance to make your own choice. Without anyone, your parents, your siblings, your expectations, holding you back. I want you to choose for yourself, will you?"
Well.
That was new.
Dmitri glanced through his unkempt hair, his piercing gaze like a knife pointed at 'Shimmer's throat.
"What do I get out of this arrangement?"
"Potentially, your freedom."
And how could he say no to that?
That's all! 🖤
Stay safe.
