Ok, I need to make a post about this before I go insane from laughing so much.

If you know or have heard about the new series “The Summer Hikaru Died” and you don't speak Spanish, you probably have no idea about all the drama and head-hunting that is brewing on the Spanish side of the fandom.

Let me tell you, it's hilariously sad.

It turns out that there is a small problem with the subtitles. A teeny, tiny one. Just a little detail. Here is a screenshot to illustrate this.

“But what's wrong with that?” you might ask, after using Google Translate to translate “caer bien” to “Like you.”

FATAL MISTAKE. Spanish has a wide range of words for the spectrum that surrounds affection. “Caer bien” is nowhere near the kind of “like you” that this scene involves. This is basically like saying, “I can't help but think of you as a chill dude.” or "I think you are nice". In other words, someone I don't dislike.

Yes, the translator chose the blandest, most *nothing* word out of the pile. At that point, the characters are already FRIENDS. Imagine thinking that's a good way to portray their dynamic? "Caes bien" is something you say to your coworker who said "bless you" that one time you sneezed. Not a close friend.

And no, it's not an error. The translator, María Victoria Rodil, argued on her twitter that her choice of words was based on her professional “judgment.” I, personally, can't imagine anything more unprofessional than shoe-horning your own opinion into a piece of media by removing ALL the queer sub (and very much implicit in all ways possible) text.

Another example of how she massacred our boy:

"I thought they were boyfriends" to “I thought he was a girl”. If this is not pure and plain homophobia, I don't have any idea what it is then.

At least the community has presented a strong backlash against this. There is a petition right now with 51.000 signatures to change it.

BUT, that's not all. The hilarious part about all this are the memes that were born as a result of this incident. Please laugh with me, I am rolling in the ground right now because the irony is so PEAK:

-armour with heart + ribcage referencing kris’ part in the prophecy . I think for chapter 1-3 in the dark world their armour doesn’t have much details but in the church its insanely detailed

-there’s chainmail under there ! it’s also subtle like cage imagery tbh . Atleast thats what my brain says

-lots of piercings. I think when they were kids dess did their lobes and they kinda just started doing their own after she disappeared

-that tiny face scar is probably from the dess disappearing thing but i am not saying all that here okay <3

miyano and hirano's friendship is sooooo funny to me. like there's that one sasamiya chapter where he's talking to ogasawara like "yeah hirano is a great senpai... i respect him a lot... he's really cool and smart.... also i think he should take it up the ass" meanwhile hirano is like "i really appreciate how diligent miyano is. he's reliable and a good kouhai. i just wish he'd stop talking about me taking it up the ass"

now that the summer hikaru died is on netflix and getting more attention i predict that there's going to be a wave of people saying that it should be more explicitly gay but i think anyone who says that is missing the point tbh. the crux of it all is that the real hikaru died before yoshiki could admit that he loved him and now he has to spend every day with the living breathing reminder of that. it's about the yearning, the grief for something that could have been and now never will be. mourning in silence and always wondering what it would have been like if you were brave enough to be true to yourself

also four chapters in yoshiki sticks his entire arm into a slit in hikaru's chest and hikaru blushes and says it feels good so idk theyre not exactly being subtle here. tbh. this is the love as consumption anime guys

something i really love abt tshd is how queerness is so intrinsic to the plot without it being the main focus, it’s pretty common in anime/manga where if there are canon queer characters, the word gay or actual queer struggles are never mentioned. but in tshd, yoshiki is very clearly repressed and closeted living in a rural, homophobic town in japan. it’s *suffocating* him, the only person he really had was hikaru but now he’s “gone” but still not quite gone, leaving him tethered back to this town. it’s obviously a super common sentiment among queer people who live in rural areas to want to escape into city.

and i know everyone laughs at this panel for the iconic ell jee bee tea thing. but in context it’s one of the most heartbreaking and relatable scenes in the whole manga imo. the people of this town aren’t just homophobic, but they’re trying to erase the mere existence of gay people as a whole by covering it up. its pretty obvious that yoshiki is depressed, and it’s easy on the surface to think its solely because he literally has a monster possessing his dead childhood friend/crush’s corpse. but its pretty clear that it only strengthened what was already there. (lowkey his themes are very reminiscent of owen in ‘i saw the tv glow’)

it’s hilarious seeing people say “why did they have to make it gay” ever since the anime trailer came out bc truthfully this story would not work nearly as well as it does if it wasn’t just some random ass straight couple. i really hope anime watchers look deeper into the narrative instead of just saying “omg its uwu toxic yaoi” or “it’s a horror anime with forced woke gay ppl in it”
