I had an absolutely terrifying thought about the endgame: what if Toby plays on our expectations of the end of Undertale to effectively deliver a one-two punch of feelings?

What I mean is, everyone wanted to give up their SOUL to save Asriel at the end of Undertale. If Kris, and by extension us, really are going to try and pull Dess out of whatever death-like limbo she's locked in, it may require a SOUL to help free her, whether it's just because of how much power a SOUL has or to replace Dess' old one if she's effectively become soulless like Flowey. If we have that choice, we're effectively going to have to choose between letting Kris (possibly) die, or allowing Dess to fade away. Susie will have to give up her only friend, or Noelle will have to let go of her sister for good; "damned if you do, damned if you don't." There is also the chance we won't get this choice ("Your choices don't matter," after all), but man, it'd be a great way for Toby to fuck with people who played Undertale first.

We know that dead Lightners can come back to life in a Dark World in specific circumstances, see Gerson Boom.

So, here's my theory: December is dead. How she died is unknown and not entirely necessary right now, she's just dead. Carol has kept her dust somewhere away from prying eyes, possibly coating the inside of her guitar with it (complete wild guess, do not take as fact)???

Either way, she and Kris are also in cahoots. A random idea I had as well is that Carol KNOWS that Kris and the player are two separate entities, but that's tinfoil-hat territory at this point and idk how relevant that will be.

Carol has been running around creating Dark Fountains and leaving Dess' dust behind in order to revive her as the Roaring Knight. The only problem with this is that this creates a disconnect between who creates the fountains and the Knight, as it's stated the Knight has been creating fountains, but we obviously don't know all the facts. She then informs Kris of this whenever we/the SOUL are otherwise incapacitated in order to bring them and Susie into the Dark World. There's also the question of her appearance, that being a kind of Titan-spawn, but my theory for that is that, as explained by Ralsei, re-creating Dark Fountains may alter a Lightner's appearance after the previous one is sealed, and Dess has been revived so many times her spirit has been so suffused with Darkness that almost none of her original self remains. Carol could very well be the Knight, but at this point, it's a 50-50 toss up, considering the Knight's sword is vaguely reminiscent of a katana, but could just as easily be Dess' wiffle bat or even her guitar (maybe).

For what purpose? Possibility 1 is that there's some power in the Dark World that Carol believes will be able to bring Dess back as herself instead of a warped, undead abomination. Possibility 2 is that she may want to just bring about the Roaring because Dess' death caused a lot of misanthropy and she wants everyone else to feel her pain, but I consider this one a bit far-fetched.

Until Chapter 5 (and beyond) comes out, these are the best guesses I have.

If you go the linked ArtStation, you'll find artwork that, while not bad, varies wildly in quality, and a lot of it seems to have that "AI shine" everyone can spot from a mile away, which is why I'm not censoring names. As near as I can figure, it started up in the past 6 months and I was unfortunately duped by one of them. Thankfully, the number of PMs I've been getting raised my suspicion and I decided to look further into it.
