FASD AWARENESS DAY
To raise awareness, the College of Arts and Sciences CSC together with Mr. Christian Jemverick Manio, a BS Psychology graduate and his research adviser Maam Dina Zulueta spearheaded an enlightening discussion about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that involves symptoms such as physical dysmorphologies and slow mental processing abilities. The sole cause of FASD is prenatal alcohol exposure. Keep in mind that even if FASD is incurable; this does not mean that it is not preventable. Be mindful of your health! Please spread the word that no amount of alcohol is safe to consume during pregnancy!

Angeleneans take part in Climate Strike
Angeles University Foundation participates in the worldwide climate strike by placing booths at the AUF Main Building and the PS Lobby on September 20. The University Student Council partnered with the College of Arts and Sciences College Student Council, the Biological Science Society, and the College of Arts and Sciences' official college publication, Lighthouse, to bring awareness on climate change and it's rapid effects to the environment.
The booths also have a petition, which asks university officials to support the Greening AUF advocacy, for students to sign.
Mr. Jan Castro, the president of the College of Arts and Sciences College Student Council, said “the strike is a response to the alarming rate of (negative) changes to the environment caused mostly by man-made activities. If we do not act now, it is projected that most organisms living on the planet would go extinct in 20-30 years time”.
Greta Thunberg, a fifteen year old Swede, initiated the strike in 2018 by dropping out of school and protesting in front of the Swedish parliament, saying why should she study for a future she won’t have. After a year, hundreds of millions of people all over the world now join her in the protest for change.

The Induction and Knighting Ceremonies of AUF ROTC Batch MAGSINGLAHI
BY: Angelo Fernandez
“Rewards sown through hard work are 10 times more satisfactory when reaped”
Contrary to popular belief, The ROTC or Reserve Officers Training Course section of the NSTP isn’t all about hardships or difficulties. Just this 26th day of October, 2019, the annual induction and recognition ceremonies of the AUF ROTC was held in St. Cecilia’s Auditorium on the 4th floor of Angeles University Foundation.
The induction and recognition ceremonies are integral part of the ROTC. It is during this time that the probationary cadets are finally accepted and recognized as full-fledged members of the Cadet Corps, when their upperclassmen get promoted, and when the 1st Class cadets do their ringhop ceremony.
68 out of the 79 Cadet Officers of batch MAGSINGLAHI who passed the COQC or Cadet Officer Qualifying Course were inducted last Saturday after two months of training and doing their best to satisfy the requirements given them by their upperclassmen. The solemn ceremony brought up a wave of emotions as the family members watched the Cadets being inducted. The Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Archimedes T. David, gave the welcome remarks while sir Joseph Renus Galang, the director of CCFP, welcomed the guest of honor.
The guest of honor for the ceremony was LTC. Arthur B. Balunes Jr. PAF, GSC, the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Air Reserve Center of the Philippine Air Force. He recognized and welcomed the 68 cadets presented by the commandant, 2LT Mark Jeo Doronilla PAF. Together, they witnessed the knighting rites conducted by the Corps Commander, now CDT LTC Warren M. Mallari. After the knighting rights, the cadets were given their ranks of 4th Class and their upperclassmen were promoted with their respective positions.
One of the highlights of the night was the ringhop ceremony, in which the 1st Class cadets were given the bullring which symbolizes their commitment and loyalty to the Corps and the organization, much like how in a wedding, a couple would wear a ring to symbolize their commitment and devotion to each other.
The successful event showed that the ROTC isn’t just about the training and the hardwork that the members of the Cadet Corps do, it is also about loyalty and chivalry, and reaping hard earned rewards sown with seeds of passion and determination.

BY: Mark Gil Sabandal
On September 28, 2019, Angeles University Foundation Graduate School Student Council organizes a seminar themed, "A good dissertation is a done dissertation". The seminar entails tips and strategies for a successful thesis writing. Serving as the resource speaker is Dr. Christian T. Gloria, Associate Professor at the Hawaii Pacific University.
The seminar focuses on how doctorate and master of arts (MA) students can finish their dissertation paper on time. Dr. Gloria states that in order to produce quality writings, researchers must allocate time in doing research and that they should always maximize resources. But most importantly, to enjoy what they are doing. Dr. Gloria also emphasizes that the subject matter of a paper should be aligned with the interest to ensure that one can monitor the progress of the paper, and it would really be helpful to plan tasks so researchers would know when to concentrate for their paper as well as to take themselves away from distraction. In addition, the life lesson engaged in this seminar lays on the idea of choosing the right people to be with. After all, your co-researchers, your thesis adviser, your friends, family, and colleagues are your support system.

The unhealthy effects of today’s food trends
Tumblr media
BY: Marge Morales
Got a promotion? Eat! Failed a test? Eat! Got your heart broken? Eat.
When you come to think of it, as Filipinos, we always rely on food whether we’re happy or sad, no matter what the occasion may be. With the emergence of different food trends and convenient restaurants, we are able to conveniently feed our hunger. However, the question is: How often do we spend for these cravings?
SAMGYUPSAL
It’s a current frenzy among Filipinos. The idea of grilling our own barbecue and getting to ask for unlimited side dishes excites us all. The good side of it, we get our daily dose of protein plus leafy green goodness. Korean Barbecue has been a nationwide demand that even some restaurants are open 24 hours.
However, according to the National Nutrition Council, 10 strips of such pork barbecue already contains 1,300 calories. Given that the average person spends more than two hours eating in a Samgyupsal restaurant, it is more likely to exceed the said amount of calories which experts say can be bad for the body. This can be a factor for complications such as high blood pressure or hypertension.
MILK TEA
It’s everybody’s favorite. Look around you and you would instantly see numerous branches of Milk Tea houses featuring their own take on certain flavours. The warm temperature of the day always calls for a cold drink. But there’s more behind this sweet treat.
When ordering the said drink, we are often asked which sugar level we prefer. However, experts claim that choosing the lowest amount of sugar level already exceeds the maximum amount of sugar we can take in a day. Moreover, the World Health Organization suggests that an adult should only consume 5 to 10 teaspoons of sugar in a day.
With that being said, it’s not wrong to treat yourself with a good meal or drink once in a while. I’m guilty, too! But It always boils down to how many times we consume these tasty goodness! Eat and drink, responsibly!
