Humans cannot fly, but they can get the flying feeling. All they need to do is go out at night into a wild storm where the thunder roars like applause and the lightning throws itself in daggers of light at your bare feet and you suddenly find you are not afraid.

I used to think Caddy was kind because it was easier than fighting. Then for an experiment I tried being kind myself. I lasted about half a day. It’s not easy. Cadmium Gold Casson. The Casson Family Series. Hilary McKay.

This is so cute!!! The details make it so perfect, I love finding other fans who love all the little details in the books <3

The Casson Family Kids!
This is based around Hilary McKay’s Casson family series (starting with “Saffy’s Angel”).
From left to right, the characters are Saffron, Sarah Warbeck (not a Casson but close enough to the family to count), Indigo, Rose (holding Carlos), and Caddy. The basic idea of the picture is that Sarah wants to hold Carlos but Rose wants him for herself c:
RANDOM LITTLE DETAILS: - Saffy and Sarah both have nose studs. - There is a buttercup on Caddy’s shirt (Carlos = Buttercup, geddit?). - Caddy is barefoot because (a) I wanted to draw her in heels but after Saffy’s came out all weird I decided against it and (b) she seems like a barefoot kinda gal. - Sarah and Rose are both wearing the same hat: this hat is the hat that Rose got shouted at for pointing at. - The hat is supposed to have a rose on it (although the rose is not clear). - THE CASSON SMILE. “They all do it”.
I had trouble with the wheelchair because Sarah’s legs are too short… I kinda gave up with that. I love Sarah’s eyes and tried to do the same with Caddy’s but she ended up looking a little crazed to say the least. SARAH IS TOO SMUDGY. I love Rose’s hair though.

I’ve been rereading the Casson Family Series this summer and I just finished Caddy Ever After, so I had a sudden burst of inspiration to doodle Rose in her gold bridesmaid dress and sneakers that she wore to Caddy’s disastrous wedding.
This fandom needs some love these days so I am going to revive it :)
I’ll dedicate this drawing to @lunarblue21 - I’ll have to do something Tom/Rose related next!

This is really lovely! I love that each of the kids is drawn in "their" color <3

I just drew and edited this instead of studying but I’m so happy with how it turned out, so now I’m going to Do Serious Work ^_^
It’s the Casson (half-)siblings! Caddy, Saffy, Rose, and Indy.
(Sorry, Indy, there was a shadow on your side of the paper, that’s why you look like a Star Wars hologram.)

Also, that CFS archive is sooo dead. We should wake up the forum again!!

I’ve been re-reading the Casson Family Series this summer and remembered that I had created this url years ago with the intent to start a place to collect all things Casson but then forgot about it, so I’ve decided to start it now! I hope I can find other fans still lurking around here on tumblr who love these books as much as I do!

He is tall and too thin and stubborn and brave and I think he is the only one of us who really thinks about what will happen next, and if it does, whether it will be possible to survive.

The Casson Family Series by Hilary McKay
These are delightfully charming books for readers of all ages, and if you love to be swept into a world where you never want to leave, I’d recommend these books. They’re about a whimsical family of artists, and the children are all named after paint colors, and the characters are so real and lovable that you’ll want to be adopted straight into their world. I love these books so much that my username on this site has been permanentrose for nearly ten years now, and I don’t think I’ll ever change it.
I love these new covers so much! I honestly can’t decide if I like them better than these ones. Such lovely cover art - I truly wish I owned either one of these in box set.
@lunarblue21 - tagging you because I know you were sad there wasn’t any love in the Casson Family tag, so her ya go <3

“I didn’t think you would bother to send cards to anyone but Tom,” I said.
Rose did not say anything for a bit, and then she said something I did not understand at all.
“They’re all for Tom, really.”
- from Caddy Ever After by Hilary McKay
I was having a nostalgic moment today and looking through some of my books, so I came across one of my favorite series (The Casson Family Series) and I was paging through it, reading some snippets here and there, when I came across this line which has always stood out to me. I’ve always liked the way that Hilary McKay puts such profound and meaningful moments in her children’s books without providing explanation for them. They’re just there, and they’re so achingly real. It’s truly something to be cherished in a book.
In this moment that I have quoted, Rose has just made a bunch of Valentine cards to hand out to various people in her life, but the one person who matters most is the boy she has fallen in love with, Tom.
I remember looking at this line, “They’re all for Tom, really,” and resonating so deeply with this seemingly simple line. Have you ever loved or adored or admired someone to the point where you just want so desperately to please them and do something to make them smile? All you want is to do something special for them, but you don’t want it to stand out or be awkward or for you to come on to them with a frightening amount of enthusiasm, so instead, you do something for them under the guise of planning something that will benefit others too. But in the end, it was all for them really.

“Who said anything about falling in love?” growled Rose crossly. “Falling! Falling is by accident! I didn’t fall in anything!”

Started working on this during inktober, but it took me a while to actually finish since this is probably one of the more complex drawings I’ve even done digitally.
So now I finally present to you a drawing of the Casson Family, inspired by Rose’s wall mural in Indigo’s Star. These are the series of books I get my username from just in case anyone was curious. I’ve been wanting to do this drawing for years honestly, and I’m pretty pleased with the end results. All of the kids are wearing clothing that’s the color that they were named for, and the sky is a blend of all of those colors.
Here’s a close up of everyone since I feel like some of the detail gets lost in the large picture. (Well except for Bill. I don’t really like how he turned out anyway tbh and might need to edit him later. He threw off the symmetry anyway)
Tagging @leiasolo77 for giving me inspiration to stick with this drawing, and @lunarblue21 because she’s the only other person I know who still loves these books as much as I do.
