I just want to say your blog is fucking beautiful.

I have been collecting meows for a while now both to practice my own meows, and eventually prove that my meows are indistinguishable from a housecat with a blind side by side comparison test and this absolutely fantastic for me.

I am also have a linguistics nerd friend who has transcribed my meows before and I am in awe at the ability to command these arcane symbols.

Thank you! I do think this page is better as a gag than as a resource (especially since i dont actually have any training in this kind of stuff, so my accuracy is questionable), but I'm glad people are enjoying it and surprised someone actually finds it useful.

yeah

i started doing the slashes because i thought the idea of cat noises having a sufficiently well-studied phonology for phonemic transcriptions to be meaningful was funny

but i'm not sure that lands given how clearly narrow a lot of the transcriptions look (because they are), so i sometimes consider dropping that part of the bit and just doing the correct thing instead

but i still think it's a little bit funny, so the slashes stay for now
