C.T.04 - THE FEATURES "X Features" LP https://catalinatapes.bandcamp.com/album/c-t-04-features-x-features-lp "The Features, perhaps more than anybody, were the band that provided the stylistic delineation between punk and post-punk in the Auckland, New Zealand scene. The band formed in late 1979, led by Jed Town (guitar) and James Pinker (drums). Both were members of The Superettes with Paul Kean (later The Bats), and when Kean left to join Toy Love they pulled in Karel Van Bergen (vocals, ex-Primmers), and Chris Orange (bass, ex-Terrorways) to complete the line-up. Drawing from the likes of Public Image Ltd, Wire, the emerging New York no-wave movement and Town's passion for late period Beatles, the Features offered a far more experimental and jagged sound than most of their peers and were instantly popular, drawing strong crowds at the assorted hall gigs that were increasingly regular weekend events in the city. Their first release was the single 'City Scenes' on the new Propeller label, which reached number No.32 in the New Zealand charts in June 1980. The label was created by Simon Grigg especially for the band, who then entered Harlequin Studios, where they recorded eight tracks for a proposed album. Despite their brief lifespan and handful of releases, Features are repeatedly named as a primary influence by many acts that followed them, breaking down, as they did, the barriers that had been constructed by the first and second waves of New Zealand punk." http://flyingnun.co.nz/news/features-reissue-lp-and-city-scenes-video/2016 http://thespinoff.co.nz/music/07-12-2016/the-features-nailing-punk-to-the-post/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=9&v=ydHDLFpXhYw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2mCgOrme2Q I will be sending all the pre-orders during this week, thanks a lot for the support!! THE FEATURES (New Zealand, 1980) LP out soon on Catalina Tapes. “the band formed in late 1979, led by Jed Town (guitar) and James Pinker (drums). Both were members of The Superettes with Paul Kean (who had replaced Richard Stillwell in that band), and when Kean left to join Toy Love they pulled in Karel Van Bergen (vocals, ex-Primmers), and Chris Orange (bass, ex-Terrorways) to complete the line-up. Drawing from the likes of Public Image Ltd, Wire, the emerging New York no-wave movement and Town's passion for late period Beatles, The Features offered a far more experimental and jagged sound than most of their peers and were instantly popular, drawing strong crowds at Liberty Stage, XS Café, the Rock HQ and the assorted hall gigs that were increasingly regular weekend events in the city. They found themselves unwelcome at more traditional venues like Mainstreet and The Gluepot however, partially because of their strong boot-boy following. Their first release was the single 'City Scenes' on the new Propeller label, which reached number No.32 in June 1980. The label was created by Simon Grigg for the band. The band entered Harlequin Studios in July and August where they recorded eight tracks for a proposed album. After a visit to Hamilton, The Features headed south in August, playing in Wellington and Christchurch, where they were forced to return home after all their band gear was stolen. In late September, 1980, Jed Town left for Sydney, thus effectively ending the band, however four songs from the Harlequin sessions were mixed by James Pinker and Simon Grigg. These were issued as the numbered limited edtion The Perfect Features Exposed 12-inch EP in December. Jed Town returned for the release of the record but soon returned to Sydney. Van Bergen and Pinker followed Town across the Tasman early in the new year. In Sydney, James Pinker played with SPK (Van Bergen would tour the US with them); Town would form Fetus Productions, initially with Van Bergen, Pinker and others, and later ICU. In the UK from 1982, James Pinker was a member of Dead Can Dance and played with The Jesus And Mary Chain. Karel Van Bergen was later in The Band Of Holy Joy in the UK (with former Proud Scum member John 'Atrocity' Jenkins), recording several albums for Rough Trade, then moving to Germany in the 2000s. He passed away in Munich on August 28th, 2013. Despite their brief lifespan and handful of releases, The Features are repeatedly named as a primary influence by many acts that followed them, breaking down, as they did, the barriers that had been constructed by the first and second waves of New Zealand punk.” (audioculture bio) Some members were part of groups like SPK , Dead Can Dance or Fetus Productions. C.T.03 - MULTIPLE MAN "PERSUASION" OUT NOW!
Tumblr media
MULTIPLE MAN "Persuasion" 12" C.T.03
After publishing an outstanding demo and two singles these Aussie brats, leaving behind their characteristic synth-punk sound, have, this time around,  pull off a 12” that shows an improved sound full of groove with a marked funky accent and galvanised electro technique. The EP features four tracks that rescue the influences of Clock DVAand the danceable mood of Severed Heads, while at the same time blows away SPKat their funkiest, thus recovering the most hedonistic veneer of electro-industrial music.Multiple Man prove that anyone, from Uganda to Laponia, can dance to white noise, interferences, and those voices in your head.
......................................................................................................
Co-released by Catalina Tapes and Burka For Everybody. "Identical twin electronic duo, Chris and Sean Campion present four tracks of thick slice tech-noir meat beat. As much a fixture as they are an anomaly of Brisbane Australia's musical landscape, their new material provides a marked departure from the primitive synth-punk of previous releases. Embracing inspiration in CABARET VOLTAIRE's cut-up flirtations with pop, THE MODELS, Grace Jones’ Amazonian club bangers and the dayglo industrial soundtrack of To Live and Die In LA. Featuring a b-side remix by JACK KNIFE (Major Crimes, Rule of Thirds). This is a co-operative release between Nopatience Records (Australia), Burka For Everybody (Spain), and Catalina Tapes (Spain). 4 track maxisingle, housed in a full colour jacket with glue pocket inner sleeve." No patience promo text
"Multiple Man are a fearsome commodity in the Brisbane scene. The twin pairing of Sean and Chris Campion have churned out some of the most primitive and stirring synth beats over the past two years; now they are showing more signs of life with their new knife-twister, ‘Persuasion’.
Known for their brand of dark, disciplined and intense techno-punk, Multiple Man have begun to refine their craft, yet retain the dystopian fear that adds weight to the (already heavy) sound.
‘Persuasion’ is a touch more melodic than previous releases, yet it still channels the primal intensity of earlier work which was more abrasive. I would describe it as feeling severely light headed at an underground rave – you aren’t safe among company here. ‘Persuasion’ conveys cold menace as well as any Multiple Man track. Anxiety lies heavy in the chest as the beats pulse; paranoia wracks the brain as the synths twist and coil. The new wave of dark disco is well and truly exemplified and embodied with Multiple Man. ‘Persuasion’ will be on a new 12” maxi-single, to be released through Nopatience Records, Catalina Tapes and Burka For Everybody."
