A STARTER FOR⸠HAEJIN. ( @catchcr )
A FAINT âFUCKâ MANAGED to escape their lips, the cigarette hanging loosely at the c o r n e r of jasperâs plush lips. hands fumbled around their pockets for a lighter, but the missing bump in their jeans seem to have caught them off guard. of course, they could only blame themselves â no better way to start the morning than without a good smoke. the blond stood around lazily until they spoke to the first person they saw within earshot. â hey â d'you have a lighter on you by chance? i got no clue where mine is. trade you a cig for one. â
âââ HOW HEâS HAD the misfortune of ending up in the presence of the other is baffling to haejin. their similarities began and ended with their profession (thank the heavens) leaving haejin with little motivation to fill jasperâs request - he didnât particularly like him. â you call yourself a wizard? â he inquires flatly, what use was a lighter anyway? the simplest of spells could conjure a flame strong enough to light their cancer stick. it takes everything not to roll his eyes as with a snap of his fingers he produces a spark, another snap and a flicker, a third snap and finally a flame that of which he offers to the other.Â

HE WAS SO ANNOYING. the most evil being to ever live!! the ju jak has nothing on him!! she stood there, crossing her arms. âyou took my nintendo switch you demon!!â she yelled. âi just turned eighteen!! how are you a teaching assistant?? youâre stupid!! so stupid!! canât even tell that iâm eighteen.â
âââ WHATEVER HAPPENED TO respecting authority? most days haejin ran on autopilot, these brats didnât require that much thought to handle. did he confiscate unauthorized electronics? he could hardly remember. â excuse me? are you asking for a detention? â though he hated issuing them, more unnecessary work. â if youâre really eighteen you ought to know better than to be playing games in class. â

ââ đđ đđđđđ đđđđđ đ
đđđđđđđ đđđđđđđ. her soft, rose-petal lips turned up in a grin. he smiled, half-bitten. her cheeks flushed as she bit down on her lips and walked off. it reminded him of the kind of fleeting glance that lied somewhere between I know what BEAST lurks behind that pretty face and what i wouldnât give to be DEVOURED by it. she giggled as she twirled around to meet his gaze that followed her from the hallway door he held open. he winked and waves his hand to her as the door swung shut behind him. his steps were confident, prideful of the body he carried as he sauntered into the matchmakerâs classroom, even if he was hopelessly lost.Â
he noticed her magic first, soft and warm as it glowed off her fingertips with a golden spark. he envied little things like that, an INNOCENT kind of magic that didnât burn his body or cut claw marks into his palms. his brow quirked in surprise, quickly smoothed into his usual smug half-grin. â HARAâ and friend, â he added smoothly, pulling up a chair to join them. â just the girl i was thinking of. â if his gaze flickered suggestively, he didnât linger on it. ACTUALLY, he had been reliving of SEVERAL of his past late night college jaunts, but figured he could reasonably bundle her with the other on his walk down memory lane.  â are you busy? iâm in need of some direction. â
âĄââ HE WAS NO stranger. if he was, she might easily melt under that grin and sparkling gaze. this was well tread territory, all too familiar. she struggled to retain that same cheery expression but she was a professional. heartbreak was par for the course and something she, of all people, knew how to get over. at least she liked to think she did, despite the twinge in her chest and somersaulting stomach. her smile falters before she can catch herself, forcing her to avert her attention to her notebook.Â
sheâd nearly forgotten she was in the company of another. someone other than seojin. the world disappeared around him, it always did. she couldnât decide whether he were a blinding light or a black hole. regardless her eyes always found him and him alone when they were near each other. â really? â she tried her best to sound skeptical rather than hopeful, desperation wasnât very becoming. â not at all. â she winced at her response. idiot. an apologetic glance is shot at the other across from her, hopeful theyâd forgive her. stupid, stupid, stupid. â how can i help you? â

â  he  could  have  cried.  truly  â  he could have.  in  fact,  if  it  werenât  for  the  way  the  strangerâs  eyes  seemed  to  follow  them  until  they  were  completely  out  of  sight,  he  most  likely  would  have.  he  wasnât  equipped  to  put  up  with  such  high  level  stress  situations.  because  really,  facing  fire  breathing  dragons  ??  hunting  for  devilish  pixies  and  dangerous  poltergeists  ??  hell,  that  was  considered  easy  in  kitâs  books.  but  put  before  him  an  angry  stranger,  and  one  that  was  speaking  in  fast  korean  past  a  first  graderâs  knowledge  at  that  ??  well.  it  was  to  no  surprise  that  the  first  thing  he  did  once  they  rounded  a  corner  was  pull  hara  into  as  tight  of  a  hug  as  he  could  muster.  by  that  point,  his  legs  were  already  a  closer  consistency  to  jelly,  and  heâd  cooled  down  to  somewhat  of  a  cold  sweat,  but  he  had  escaped,  alive  and  well,  and  it  was  all  thanks  to  the  other.  (  once  again,  not  that  anyone  was  surprised.  )  â  THANK  YOU.  â
â  wrapping  both  arms  around  her  and  clinging  on  even  as  he  ate  nearly  a  mouthful  of  her  hair,  it  was  worth  it  to  just  bask  in  the  freedom  of  such  a  quiet  world  !!  no  yelling  old  men,  no  complicated  korean  dialects.  just  him,  hara,  and  the  idealistic  falling  of  fluffy  snowflakes  around  them  as  her  voice  was  muffled  into  his  chest.  perfectâ  it  was  absolutely  perfect.  â  hara  ⌠ i  almost  died.  â Â
âĄââ HIS SCENT HAD become familiar, like home. she welcomed the embrace though kit didnât leave her much room to return the hug. instead, she laughed into his chest, the heat radiating from his body providing some much needed warmth to her freezing and blushed features. she pulled back, struggling to squirm free of kitâs long arms. â you did not. â the touch of amusement coloring her features only brightened at the sight of his goofy, dramatization of the whole ordeal.
â see what happens when you go wandering off on your own? what in the world happened, â she huffed though both her and kit knew she wasnât in the least bit annoyed, concerned, yes. annoyed? never. â better stay away from that guy, bit on the crazy side. pretty infamous around here, actually. â or perhaps he was just another old wives tale. nevertheless, better safe than sorry. she breathed out, entirely unsatisfied with the fact she could almost see her own breath. â now can we please go find somewhere to keep warm. â

・:ăâ・ シďžďžď˝Ľď˝Ą. THE STARS ALWAYS MADE the most sense to her, more so than other magis and humans. people were complex, coming in different variety of emotions and thoughts. she tried her best to listen and she was the best listener. the only time she feels comfortable in speaking so openly, is when she does her readings. maybe thatâs why sheâs always admired hara and her ability to be able to make so many friends and talk to so many different people.
she watched as hara does what she does best. watching as she scribbled down little anecdotes, not knowing what the specifics were but she thought it was so inspiring. âoh, no worries!! not a big deal at all.â she smiled gently as she played with her deck of cards. âo-oh?? really?? i-i donât know what i did or what that means, but thank you!!âÂ
âĄââ IT NEVER ONCE occurred to her how odd it may be to drag (practically) strangers around at her will. in many ways she was entirely too unassuming. though sheâd yet for anyone to take advantage of such naivety (yet) leaving her unchecked and, in a sense, wild. at the very least today sheâd picked a beloved senior (even if sera didnât know quite how much hara admired her) - thrilled that the other had even agreed to go out with her.Â
â donât thank me! â hara insisted, gaze trailing from face to cards. stating the obvious didnât deserve gratitude, from her perspective. the slightly flustered smile wavered as she continued focusing on the otherâs cards. of course, divination fascinated her - though sheâd dabbled in the arts the thought of knowing her own future terrified more than excited. â is it always accurate? â a stupid question coming from a matchmaker, she supposed she should know.Â

IT IS WHAT IT IS â and sometimes, hanbin canât HELP the fact that one second his pen is tracing the outline of some RIDICULOUS essay heâs supposed to write ( key words: supposed to ) and the next, thereâs a hand around his wrist that drags him over with little force, because heâs always had a soft spot for hara and her ENDEAVORS so itâs not like heâs going to deny the distraction anyways. school work can wait, especially when itâs someone that he actually doesnât MIND. she gets lost in her own world more often than not and surprisingly enough â patience never comes to him so easily â he waits for her.Â
he grins easily, fingers brushing over the spine of her book though he doesnât dare open it up â more so because heâs TERRIFIED of what heâll find in there. probably names and more names he canât and wonât pronounce. â youâre saying that like i donât spend my ENTIRE day being cute, â his reply is automatic, just waiting on the tip of his tongue for the reaction he knows sheâll give. â donât you get bored of anaylsing people? â
âĄââ AN ABRUPT GIGGLE erupted from her lips, entirely sincere. lately sheâd found herself laughing out of politeness, too caught up in filling the silences with something less awkward and uncomfortable. it felt nice to be transparent for once, her reactions genuine. there was never anything to prove with hanbin. she never had to be anything but herself, no hurdles to jump or script to follow.Â
self-consciousness was a funny thing - how it only ever seemed to manifest at the worst of times with the oddest selection of people. her cheery, unapologetic exterior might often be mistaken as the home of someone who didnât care. hara, however, cared quite a bit - much more than what one might consider healthy. it was only in moments such as this, where she felt at complete ease, that she could acknowledge the tightness of her posture and practiced smile sheâd grown so accustomed to. she melted with that giggle, making note of just how thankful she was to have a trustworthy set of friends.Â
â youâre right, my mistake. â instinctively sticking her tongue out at the other - though she couldnât, in good heart, disagree. or perhaps that was her rose-tinted glasses speaking. â never! â she gasped, hands automatically finding her notebook to cradle against her chest. â itâs much more personal and meaningful to find matches through observation. i want people to know i really care - because i do. â a coy grin ghosted her lips, the kind of expression sheâd only ever reveal to him. â plus - it doesnât hurt knowing the gossip on everyone. â

âââ IT SHOULDNâT HAVE taken as long as it did for haejin to realize he wasnât alone. his brow twitched with annoyance upon the realization, glasses sliding off nose to hit the table with a dramatic clatter. he rose slowly, amazed the student had yet to acknowledge his presence - amazed, and irritated.
â tch. â he clicked, gliding across the classroom to stand forebodingly over the student. â lecture ended half an hour ago. â he stated, arms crossed as he tilted his face into her field of view. â are you even old enough to be a student here? â @heavensecnt

âââ THE BUNDLE OF student papers nestled firmly in is sleek leather bag weighed heavy on both his shoulder and his mind. grading papers felt more like a punishment than a responsibility, which he supposed was the reason the professor had entrusted the duty onto him whatever chance he got. he had half a mind to think the old man couldnât bear reprimanding these snot nosed brats, shying from use of harsh criticism that came secondhand to the warlock. not that he particularly enjoyed crushing dreams, he frankly couldnât care less. besides, heâd happily take interacting with students on paper alone rather than having to closely instruct as the old professor swore by.Â
so his relationship with students had always been strained, strictly business as it should. for months he refused conversation, refused questions, refused office hours in favor of writing study guides and assigning additional homework to keep the kids busy. that is until the headmaster reprimanded him for such actions, forcing a hodgepodge study group onto him that heâd learned to... tolerate. it was for this reason alone he took notice small first year surrounded by an unsavory crowd he found unfamiliar. it wasnât his business or job but he found himself approaching the group nonetheless, shooting a pointed glare towards the collection of warlocks heâd decidedly labelled as degenerates.Â
â loitering in the hallway during instruction is punishable by manual labor. would you lot like to be responsible for cleaning out the animal stables for the next week? â haejin delivered the line flatly, he had no intent of following through with his threat though he also highly doubted heâd have to. he turned to joy, features barely softening though the crinkle between his brows relaxed enough to indicate friendliness. â joy. i expect better of you than to be wandering the halls during class time. â he shot another icy glance towards the lingering before continuing on his way, pause - â joy, come on now. we need to talk â @enigmvs

âĄââ THERE WAS NO greater peace in the world than her pen gliding across the pages of her most beloved notebook, that is her matchmaking journal, as she recorded her observations for the day. it was uncommon to be so methodically thorough, empirical knowledge was hardly necessary for magi matchmaking when divination and other methods existed (requiring much less analytical effort on her part). nevertheless, hara had always preferred a hands on approach with most things, matchmaking being no exception. nothing felt more satisfying than to physically hold her lifeâs work and passion in her hands.Â
she stared lovingly at the swirling pages of notes, dreamily connecting one bachelor with another in her mind with a soft sigh, nearly forgetting she was in the presence of another. someone sheâd gone out of her way to force out with her. â sorry, beautiful! â she snapped the book shut with a snap of her fingers. she always used her magic for the most useless things. â you just did the cutest little thing, like so transparent of your character! i had to write it down for reference. â

   ⪠ * i.  ëí ; â open starter  !  âŤ
â  panic  coloured  his  features  nearly  six  ways  to  sunday  as  the  person  in  front  of  him  ranted  on.  stuck  on  the  outskirts  of  haneul,  where  the  residents  were  more  human  than  magi,  there  was  no  way  to  activate  even  a  quick  translating  charm  as  he  was  hit  with  verbal  barrage  after  barrage  for  something  he  still  couldnât  seem  to  find  the  answer  for  â  hell,  he  couldnât  even  understand  what  he  was  being  yelled  at  over  in  the  first  place.  with  the  strangerâs  korean  dipping  into  a  dialect  he  could  barely  decipher,  and  a  speed  at  which  his  brain  just  wasnât  equipped  to  handle,  he  was  left  with  making  apologetic,  hopefully  soothing  gestures  as  he  shot  a  quick  one  up  to  the  gods  in  hopes  that  someone  could  step  in  to  help.  â  heyâ  hey,  âscuse  me,  can  you,  slowly  pleaseâ  iâm  sorry  ??  â  but  with  his  nerves  frayed  and  his  words  tripping  over  themselves  worse  than  ever,  nothing  seemed  to  be  getting  across.
âĄââ IT SHOULDNâT BE this hard to find a giant, yet itâd been almost hours (in reality, minutes) since hara had lost sight of that familiar tower always at her side. hara didnât take kindly to winter and wished nothing more than to be in the warm safety of a nearby cafe or restaurant, which she just couldnât do until locating her lost puppy.Â
of course she found him in the last place sheâd think to look, which if sheâd been in any right mind would have been the first place sheâd look. the events unfolding nearly amused her enough to hang back and watch, maybe if she didnât have such a nagging conscious and urgency to get inside.Â
in an instant sheâs at his side, arm looping through the otherâs tightly as she smiled cheekily at the blabbering stranger. â iâve been looking everywhere for you. â she spoke through gritted teeth as she maintained her grin, urging kit to begin inching away. â nice seeing you, sir! â she nodded towards the man before yanking kit with all her might down the street. â what a lucky day for you! meeting the town lunatic all on your own. â Â
