Artist Statement

My main focus while taking my photos was to try out all the new techniques we learned this semester and to carry them over to the next photo I took and to the work I do with video. As a film student, I had a general knowledge of most of the techniques we discussed from the film production classes I had taken but hadn’t put them into heavy practice the way I did with these images. In film, we tend to learn techniques necessary to the script we are working on and are less inclined to experiment with the camera. By embracing the experimentation that came with the freedom to shoot whatever I wanted instead of what was in a script, I was able to do a lot I wouldn’t normally try. For example, in the still-life project, I tried a lot of different lighting setups and was able to take the setups I liked the best and use them in the next portrait project. In a film project, I likely wouldn’t have the time to experiment. Being able to take these images made me much more open to the value of experimentation, both in how it can help with the work I do in my video career and with the photos I continue to take. Based on how much I was able to refine specific techniques with photography alone over the course of a few months, I plan to continue photography as a means of practice for video work. I hope people viewing these images will be able to recognize this growth.
