You also have to take into account that this room was designed to hurt Rufus physically & psychologically ( Rufus is not disabled because of the WEAPON blast, it's because of the L room lacking anything to cushion his arrival, resulting in him getting wounds you would usually get when you get into a car crash)
Even if Shinra sr had affection for him, he was still willing to hurt him as much as he could while forcing Rufus to recognize that he loved him if he want to get out, making it a form of unintentionnal gaslighting.
As silly the slide & the L room is, it portrays well how absolutely complex & messed up an abusive parent/child relationship can be. Being able to hurt people despite the fact you love them is terrifying on its own right & what make it worse is how Shinra sr conceptualized that room for his 5 y old who was trying to butter him up & was worried for him.

#also kinda noticed how his attitude toward a kid rufus is different then when he's around other people#like he seems a rather controlled monster usually but in that flashback#he's needy for praise from his own kid & lash out at him. Which tbh fits how abusive parents only hurt their fam behind close doors.#i think he is hard on Rufus bcos he just sees him as a potential extension of himself#& knowing how the devs portray him as someone who used to be good natured but the backlash against his company made him an extremist#I think you can see that thru his reaction to Rufus here#like " how dare you not agree with everything i do#& ultimately#which might be ego-fulfilling in a way#& there's also now the f'ed part about him using an organization his own son funded to commit mass murder & go to war
