Leopard Geckos at PETSMART/Petco

The last few two weeks I’ve been heavily researching and anticipating the arrival of my leopard gecko. I say arrival because we need to set up and get the right set up for the precious reptile. As a first time reptile owner it’d be easiest to get the gecko from our nearby pet stores (Petco and PETSMART).

I was worried because I’d heard a lot of awful thing about how they treated their geckos in these chain stores so this weekend we went to go pick up a tank and browse the geckos. I had heard the worst from Petco but since it was the closest - we ventured there first.

It was midday so perusal the geckos were resting. The tanks there were bigger than the one in PETSMART, though smaller than the right size for one gecko. However their one and only hid was facing the bright window (there was an opening facing our view) so customers could see them. About ten geckos were also sleeping on eachother in that one hide. Though I know they need shade I’m not sure if this was completely unhealthy.

We quickly left after my dad looked at the fish there since he loved them. We didn’t have anything else to do there besides just browsing so we went on to PETSMART.

PETSMART

When we first approached the small animals section I was shocked to see that their tank was very small about ten inches wide. But I can’t complain since they probbaly can’t provide fully fledged tanks for every pet there. But I was happy to see a hide, though only one, fully covering them all. Thought I could only see one I was still happy to see hem in the shade.

I was also happy to see they had a leopardgecko pamphlet nearby so I carried it with me while my dad also browsed the fish. I wa holding the pamphlet the rest of my journey in the store.

Unlike in Petco I saw a lot of store attendants some places. And one even noticed I was holding the leopard gecko pamphlet and told us he had lots of experience with reptiles and recently got another lizard. He also helped up pick out a tank and told us some helpful tips that I might get into in another post. He even showed us all of the geckos under that hide which were quite a few (maybe 7-9).

At the end of the day my dad walked out with a pretty dark fish with dark spots (ironically almost like a leopard gecko). I had a lot to think about.

But it would be great if any of you could tell me, from my experience son these two stores, where I should get my leopard gecko from :)

(And for the record I know lots about the care and how to keep these animals I just didnt list them here)
