I can't explain how much fun I had watching this era of MMA and Miguel was one of my favorites of that time to watch.
One of the truly frustrating things about modern MMA is that many who are “fans” do not engage with the sport in any meaningful way. For example, MMA journalism for a lot of folks begins and ends with fight announcement tweets and the Helwani show. It’s like “gamers” who think video games journalism begins and ends at review scores.
And I know it sounds like me saying they aren’t true fans”, but it’s more that frustrating to me because it means there’s less opportunity for people to do interesting things with the sport. We could have so many more Jack Slacks, Heavy Hands Podcasts, etc. We could get interviews with fighters talking about the technical aspects of their games - I’d kill for someone to talk to Poirier about the evolution of his guard.
We could get retrospective stuff - kind of like how OVW, the Lapsed Fan, or a Meltzer obituary is for pro wrestling. Articles about unsung pioneers, small promotions that had big impacts on the future of the sport, etc. We could have journalist embedded in big camps for fights. We could get honest-to-god scouting instead of like 5 dudes on the Sherdog worldwide forum and Zane Simon doing all the work. And by extension, we’d get more coverage of fringe martial arts.
The shitty part is we used to get a lot of this stuff but went away as the sport supposedly “grew”. And thankfully people still do some of this stuff.

Watched this again recently and it's still my favorite MMA fight of all time. Just one round of pure craziness that lived up to all the hype lol.

Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley | Strikeforce, 2011
The greatest one round fight in MMA history.
It's strange to think that Nate is the more famous Diaz brother nowadays, because in 2011 Nick Diaz was the man. There were still healthy alternatives to UFC branded MMA at the time, filled with high quality fighters. And while the UFC's welterweight division was being run by a dominant yet cautious Georges St-Pierre, the brash Nick Diaz had captured the Strikeforce welterweight title and become a genuine star on Showtime. By the anti-zuffa crowd, the trash-talking, fight finisher Nick was being touted as the answer to the boring, wrestling-centric repetitiveness of Georges St-Pierre. And the fervor around that potential fight only grew after Diaz faced off with Paul Daley on April 9, 2011.
Paul Daley was one of the scariest punchers at 170lbs at the time, if not the whole sport. He had been recently excommunicated from the UFC after taking a swing at Josh Koscheck in a title eliminator bout after the fight had finished. But he got back to it once out of the company, picking up four straight wins. One of those wins was a KO of the year contender against Scott Smith in Strikeforce. That got him a shot at champion Nick Diaz.

It's almost like Pico is too talented for his own good. He's gonna win in epic fashion and lose the same way. There's no in between.
Lerone Murphy stops Aaron Pico via spinning back elbow in the 1st!
Back 2 Back first round spinning back elbow finishes for UFC 319.
Pico got off to his typical hot start. Backing Murphy down, attacking the body when he was shelled up along the cage and landing with big power. Got a couple of takedowns and while he was unable to keep Murphy down, Pico was scoring with elbows as Murphy went to stand up. But when they would reset at range, Murphy would always land. An elbow here along the fence. A spinning back kick. A knee to the chest as Pico stepped in to close range. Then Murphy sells out on a spinning back elbow as Pico tries to close in again and puts Pico away.
A win over Pico isn't going to move Murphy in the rankings (nor should it), but I'm sure that finish will earn Murphy a bunch of hype. Big win for him in this spot. As for Pico? Michael Chandler 2.0. He goes so hard he self-destructs.

Shout outs to paramount+ for being one of two streaming services I have right now lol.
The UFC and Paramount have brokered a deal to take the UFC’s product to Paramount Plus.
This deal includes 30 fight nights as well as 13 numbered “marque events” a year, which shall serve as the replacement for the PPV. Some will be simulcasted on CBS. It’s a 7 year deal averages out to roughly $1.1 billion a year, though it sounds like most of that money is weighted into the back end of the deal.
The PPV model is officially dead.

Fluffy is straight up little bro'n Dolidze. He can't handle the pressure, the takedowns, he can't deal with any of it .

In the middle of the fight i went to look at Erceg's record and my first thought was he got to the deep end of the pool real quick and he hasn't figured out how to swim much yet.
Not the best performance but glad he avoided a 4 fight skid.
Steve Erceg survives awful first round to take UD over Ode Osbourne.
Great fight. Terrible performance from Erceg and his team all things considered. Yeah, Ode is a terrific athlete and a surprisingly deadly puncher at 125lbs, but he's extremely limited. And he really telegraphed everything he wanted to do.
Ode kept allowing Erceg to step forward and he'd just tag him with the lead right hook (open stance match up - Osbourne is a southpaw). But Erceg kept stepping deep into range and getting hit with it until one managed to actually drop him. Ode followed up with a lot of big blows and it really looked like he was about to put Erceg out at several points. But Erceg rallied when Ode chose to wrestle with him on the mat. Did enough to see the bell and get to round 2. In the 2nd, Erceg went heavy to the wrestling. Shot after shot just to tie up Osbourne and negate the speed advantage. He started mixing in kicks and attacking off the breaks (Ode showed some serious improvements with his TDD). I think Erceg was mostly trying to recover but he managed to edge out the round. I think the 3rd is how most people envisioned this fight. Erceg using feints to draw out responses from Osbourne, forcing him to commit to coming forward and getting countered in return. Erceg eventually manages to turn these exchanges into a takedown where he almost locks up a RNC. Ode scrambles up but Erceg keeps head control and hits a gorgeous inside trip to get the fight back down and the fight ends with him landing big shots from mount.
If you scored that one a draw, couldn't blame you. Ode really had Erceg on the edge of a stoppage in the 1st round. It's really apparent that Erceg is just not defensively aware when he's in the pocket. And it seems like his team isn't doing much to fix that. But also, this is the dangers of getting pushed too quick. Everyone gets to see the holes and plan accordingly b/c they want your spot.

One way traffic from Taira until the finish. Dropped him with the right the first and got takedowns whenever he felt like it.
