Meta asociácie, alebo Snehulienka v S&B&J

Vizuál - vlasy a oči čierne ako žúžoľ, pokožka biela ako sneh a čo sa červených pier týka, povedzme, že Bohdan končí zamazaný cudzou i vlastnou krvou dosť často na to, aby sa to počítalo.

Nevieme za akých okolností zomrela jeho matka, ale pokojne to mohlo byť pri pôrode. Pred ktorým si dlho predlho mohla priať "utešeného synka" až sa raz v zime pri vyšívaní pichla do prstu.

Všetky jeho trampoty začali otcovým druhým sobášom. Že to bol jeho otec, s kým nevychádzal, kým s macochou... Až pridobre, je podružné. Rozhodne však musel ujsť kvôli nej. Akurát ona nesiahla na život jemu, ale on jej. Stáva sa. No a krátko po Bohdanovom návrate domov (v sprievode kapitána a notára miesto princa (toho nechali vo Viedni, arcivojvodí tam)) smrť stihne aj otca.

"Let others wage war, you, happy Austria, marry!" Was the political strategy of the Habsburgs, and marry did the House of Austria! Infamously, scandalously, sensationally. A mangled wreath of a family tree. We all know this horror story. And we all know the bitter end.

After Emperor Charles V&I divided his Spanish and Austrian inheritance ((also gained through his parents' and grandparents' marriages)) to his descendants and those of his younger brother Ferdinand I respectively, the Habsburg dynasty split into two branches. The Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs notoriously intermarried for generations, right up till Charles II of Spain whose heirless death in 1700 sparked the War of the Spanish Succession. The inbreeding and this informal Latin motto behind it has been blamed to hell and back for their implosion, for the physical ugliness that ran in this royal bloodline. But it is not to say the Habsburgs never went to war, nor that dynastic marriage was a political strategy unique to them! But they were, if anything, bloody successful at it seeing how they did rule half of Europe for 200 years, and then a lot of it in the Austrian line for another 200. Before anyone figured out inbreeding was bad it was considered a privilege to marry into the Habsburgs, with Louis XV claiming that Louis XVI's betrothal to Marie Antoinette was marrying the "Daughter of the Caesars", and Napoleon Bonaparte infamously ditching Josephine for Marie Louise. Charles II was a poor sod who took the fall and the mugs were wretched from the same ugly gene being passed around countless times*, but they did wear power and privilege well.

Devil in details

There are two small things I really have to appreciate about Červenák's approach to Koščej.

The way, he won't be intimidated no matter what. Don't get me wrong, he does get scared. Wraith bears terrified him. And Mikula identified his screaming in Sarkel as kinda afraid. But boy, does he plow through no matter what anyway. Impossible odds? To hell with them, he goes forth. Is it salvation, death or darkness, that awaits him north? He shall see and take whatever gods fated for him without hesitation. Come the third book, Ilja cuts him with Gnev, the only bloody thing to wound him in whole world and gods, was it a clash… He goes from suprise to snarling in a second. He got his ascendency and arm chopped off in that cellar in Sarkel, he doesn't give a damn, challenges Ilja yet again. I find myself impressed by and fond of this imperviousness, indominability, determination.

And the way he contrasts with Tugarin in that he respects a valiant foe. He will tear them down for all the flaws they have and gloat in their face about what will attacking him cost them, he will be vicious and sadistic in fighting back and in punishing them. Mercy is synonymous with mistake in his mind. And his arrogance and thirst for blood have skyrocketed since his merging with Zyrnitra's scale. Still he finds it in himself to appreciate the effort of his enemies rather than be merely offended and incredulous about how dare they. And of course, that is of little value to the one opposing him when life and more is at stake. But I think it is a nice touch to his characterization. And goes well with his commitment to peeling off soothing and glamorous pretenses, commitment to facing stuff. Makes him a better, more compelling villain.

Križiacka doba - 1033 AD – 1300 AD Ďurov Bohatier sa neodohráva vo Fínsku. Samotný dej prebieha v Povolží s menšou odbočkou na sever smerom k Dvine (od Čeremisov k Čudom), časť hlavných postáv je z Podnepria a Novgorodu. Lenže autor Iľju v jednej diskusii označil za Ugrofína a severskí variagovia žili v susedstve Fínov a mali s nimi čulé styky, takže to relevantné je. Navyše tie odevné zvyklosti mali isté styčné body.

Dobrého slova nemá ani pre zjazvených chamtivých násilníckych lovcov na ich stope, z ktorých mrazí aj samotnú vrchnosť 17. a 19. storočia.

Guláš morduje milenky vo vriacej polievke zo zabitých sokov v láske a ku kupčeniu s ľuďmi je rovnako ochotný ako bola banda, ktorú práve zložil.

Koloman "Kolozub" Warga nie je definícia policajnej brutality len preto, že ju prekračuje (a od žandárstva prešiel k lovu na vlastnej nohe), nejakú dobu sa nechával uplácať Horváthom a kariéru mieni uzavrieť tým, že si zbojníkmi ukradnuté peniaze nechá on sám a neváha zabiť ani nevinných svedkov a svojho vlastného podriadeného, pretože s hentou naivnou ustráchanou dušou by sa o nakradnuté nikdy nepodelil.

A Ďuro naložil aj Old Shatterhandovi a Winnetouovi, keď z nich v Štrkáčovi Callahanovi urobil krvilačné svine, ktoré sa starajú len jeden o druhého. Pretože tí z Mayoviek by vraj na skutočnom divokom západe nemali šancu.

Takže asi je predovšetkým cynik. :D

Ale treba dodať, že také Pávie oko je trochu iná šálka čaju a za kľúčovú považujem aj informáciu, že to parťákovi s jedlom narástla aj chuť na isté vlastné finančné zabezpečenie, kým u Páva to bola opovážlivosť šliapať na kurie oká (ktorá ostatne bola Pávovým základným motívom).

To everyone who has lush fields ripe with story ideas but is struggling to go out and actually harvest them with your writer’s scythe: that’s alright. There’s a reason.

I see writers despairing or making self-deprecating jokes about how many wips they have, as if the ability to come up with the idea is equal to the ability to finish it out into an end product.

It isn’t.

A lot of our ideas come about, not because we were determined to be productive writers, but because daydreaming is an internal escape from life’s demands.

Writing is a demand, too.

Resting and relaxing are basic needs, unlike the high level, abstract satisfaction of being creatively productive. That’s why you might daydream (which is a mild and normal form of dissociation) ideas that you feel good about, and then struggle to research, write the words, fill plotholes, check grammar, revise— all the critical thinking and executive function things involved in creation. Your basic needs must be satisfied before your higher needs can be met effectively.

So, if you’re daydreaming about your stories extensively to mitigate stress, it’s expecting a lot of your stressed self to return from fantasy land, sit down in the cold hard real world and do the hard work to write masterpieces of literature. Those operations are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Writing is hard. Making yourself feel guilty is only going to make it harder. You don’t have to atone for entertaining or distracting your mind by making that available to other people. Daydreaming is a valid end in itself.

Don’t feel bad about having ideas but not being able to write them. Scribble some notes if you can, if you want, but above all enjoy the escapism and take care of yourself first. The words will come after.
