Humans of NET/WORK: These 3 jobseekers have a story to tell
If you really tried, you could catch all the stories that teem beneath the roar of the crowd at Technical.lyâs annual NET/WORK jobs fair, where we link local tech companies that are hiring to the people who dream of working there.
As hundreds of jobseekers bustle between the booths, exchanging pleasantries with company reps and clumsily handing copies of their resumes, what passersby are really seeing are pivotal moments in the making, and human lives that might be about to change.
Thatâs what we saw on Tuesday evening at The Fillmore, as the Philly iteration of the multi-city event series took over the concert venue. Hundreds of developers, engineers and designers did the rounds along rows of swag-cluttered tables.
From large financial services companies like Vanguard to nascent startups like Crossbeam, some 55 companies met potential future staffers last night. But they were so much more than their resumes let on.
Here are the stories of three Humans of NET/WORK:
Donning a yellow jacket and a carefully selected blouse that matched her business cards, content marketer Dalbo drove two hours from Scranton, Pa., to get within earshot of Philly tech companies in a bid to make Philadelphia her home.
But it wasnât just the pull of the big city that landed her in the middle of a job fair: The Scranton startup she had recently worked for was âfalling apart,â she said, so it was time to quit and find her next thing.
âMy dream company is one thatâs sort of laid back,â said Dalbo. âA place that lets me do my job.â
Moreno, a front-end developer, is one of 3 million Venezuelan migrants who have left the South American country amid a widespread economic and political collapse. He moved to the U.S. in 2017, and last October he relocated from Chester County to West Philly, ready to reconnect with his tech skills.
(Morenoâs also an operatic tenor. Seriously: Listen to him here belting âGranadaâ for the back row at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church.)
Until the right job shows up, heâs making ends meet doing night-time cleaning shifts at a Center City shopping mall. Heâs hoping his coding skills can outshine his English â which he admits is at âcommunicative level.â
âI think that I can make a good impression by completing projects even if I donât speak perfect English,â Moreno said in Spanish. âIâm curious about working for a high-growth startup, a place that can let me use all of my skills.â
(Full disclosure: This reporter, a fellow Venezuelan, had previously met Moreno through friends in common.)

Social worker Shaw spends her days helping families with small children in the autism spectrum have access to essential services like physical therapy.
In a bid to reshape her career path, she made a bold career move by entering Pennâs six-month coding bootcamp. Her next job should be with a company thatâs friendly and welcoming. They should also, Shaw said, allow her to combine her passion for social work with the JavaScript skills she acquired.
After all, the program cost her lifeâs savings.
âI need to see that pay off,â Shaw said.

NFL Mock Draft 2019: Los Angeles Chargers get beefier
The Chargers made large strides last year that no one saw. The Chiefs were amazing fans and media alike with their high scoring offense and starting 4-0 while the Chargers were 2-2 (and were down 17-6 in game 5). People were already writing them off as âsame old chargersâ. But the chargers fought and persevered. While the chiefs were putting up 50 on Monday Night football, the Chargers were stringing together a 6-game winning streak (a task that no other team in their division could manage). The chargers played consistent, tough football. After finishing with the same record as the #1 seed in the playoffs. They unveiled a version of Quarters defense that had 4 defensive linemen, no linebackers, and 7 defensive backs. The chargers hoped they were able to contain the middle with their 4 defensive linemen and use their defense backs and their speed to contain Lamar Jackson. While this plan worked for the Ravens, the Patriots hoped and prayed for the chargers to use this defense. When the Chargers used the modified quarters, the Patriots ran the ball down their throat. Any time the Patriots ran the ball, the Patriots would get a consistent push up the middle. They wouldnât out run anyone, but they would get a healthy running game at 4.6 yards and 4 touchdowns. Once they established the run, the defensive backs starting biting on run fakes worse than Kurt Coleman. In a NFL that is attempting to get faster, the Patriots show that the power running game is still useful, in fact they rode the running game to a Super Bowl victory (fun fact, last person to throw a touchdown in the Super Bowl is Nick Foles). If the chargers are going to run this modified Quarters defense they will have to stop the run. They need a space eater who will generate a push. They need someone to force running backs outside to the speed of the team. They need Dexter Lawrence

You canât teach 6â4â. You canât teach 342 (ok maybe with a few pizzas, burgers etc etc). The largest player on Clemson who earned the name âHulkâ would be a smashing addition to a stellar defensive line that includes Bosa, Ingram and Brandon Mebane. Adding Lawrence would demand double teams, take the pressure from Mebane in the middle, while forcing one on one match ups for Bosa and Ingram. They would be able to reduce the power runs up the middle and allow the Charger speed to get to the edge, creating a defense that could get pressure without blitzing, and I think that works well

Now a man-eating nose tackle like this wonât have great stats, in fact he only had 15 solo tackles, and 1.5 sacks. Hulkâs job is to smash and let everyone else shine. This pick makes an already impressive line elite. As a run stopper he already has the grade, but what about the passing grade, let me cherry pick something from Pro Football Focus like everyone else does:
Strengths:
Enormous frame with intimidating combination of size and power
Healthier and much quicker in 2018
Impressive athletic ability for his size
Footwork allows disruptive power to travel down the down the line
Agility to defeat or recover quickly from cut blocks
Possesses booming upper-body power
Disengages from single blocks whenever he wants to
Able to thwart seal blocks and mangle down blocks that miss the target
Has potential to eat double teams and let his linebackers roam free
Ball carriers are finished once he gets his hands on them
Punishing bull-rusher with leg drive to constrict pocket space
Weaknesses:
Has been unable to equal impressive production from freshman season
Average rush talent likely to limit draft value
Lacks looseness as rusher to find edges
Basic rush counters relatively ineffective
More reliant upon size over technique at this stage
Gets caved by double teams when he doesnât sink his post
Inconsistent hand placement/quickness for early control at the point
Occasionally shortcuts flow to the ball causing him to lose his fit
How does the Hulk measure up

Oh heâs a damn monster, posting a wingspan, weight, and bench press in the 96% percentile or better. Lawrence isnât a flashy pick. But the chargers are fine not being the flashy team. They want to beat them. They want to smash them, and what better way to smash, than with the hulk.

Sacred spaces reimagined with preservation, Philly communities in mind
Many of the 800-plus historic sacred places in the city of Philadelphia already offer their spaces for events, programs, and to other organizations. This project seeks to solidify the bonds between faith institutions and their surrounding communities.
To that end, each of the religious sites was paired with a community organization from their neighborhood, as well as a pro-bono team of professional designers. The Philadelphia Masjid joined forces with The Peopleâs Emergency Center, the community development corporation that serves Mantua and West Philadelphia, and a group of designers led by the firm HOK. Wharton-Wesley United Methodist Church teamed up with ACHIEVEability, an agency that offers supportive services to low-income residents, and designers led by Brawer & Hauptman Architects. Along North Broad Street, Zion Baptist Churchâs community partner is Called to Serve CDC and the design was led by Studio 6mm.
The next phase for the congregations will be their capital plans. Beth Miller, executive director of the Community Design Collaborative, says they hope in the future to have another round of Sacred Places/Civic Spaces to assist more faith communities and neighborhood groups in Philadelphia, as well as sharing the programâs template with other cities.
âIn Philadelphia, many communities are in transition, and it just makes sense to look to sacred places as the community hubs that they were intended to be,â said Miller in a statement. âSacred Places/Civic Spaces explores what can and should be done to preserve, protect and re-purpose sacred places as civic spaces that can be open to all.â

Should the Eagles be interested in recently reinstated Karlos Williams?
Itâs no secret that the running back situation in Philadelphia is a bit up in the air as we head into the offseason. Thereâs a host of young rushers still under contract, Jay Ajayiâs future with the team is unknown, and thereâs been no shortage of rumors surrounding free agents like LeâVeon Bell, and even some former Eagles like LeSean McCoy, LeGarrette Blount and Kenjon Barner.
Earlier this offseason there was also speculation that the team could be interested in recently suspended/dropped Kareem Hunt â who ended up being signed by the Browns â which makes running back Karlos Williams being reinstated by the league this week somewhat intriguing.
Williams was a beast his rookie season with the Bills in 2015, setting a league record for touchdowns in his first six career games, and in the 11 games he played that year, notched 93 carries for 517 yards and seven touchdowns, along with 11 receptions for 96 yards and two more scores.
The 2015 fifth-round pick even averaged 5.6 yards per attempt his first season. By comparison, that tops all of the Eagles rushers from 2018: Josh Adams (4.3 y/a), Wendell Smallwood (4.2 y/a), Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles (4.1 y/a), and Corey Clement (3.8 y/a).
Despite Williams having a bright future, he was suspended by the Bills the following offseason, July 2016, for four games for violating the leagueâs substance abuse policy, only to eventually be cut by the team that drafted him in late-August. He was eventually signed to the Steelers practice squad in October 2016, but by the end of November was serving a 10-game suspension for violating the same league rule.
Subsequently, he was cut by Pittsburgh in March 2017, when the running back was suspended for yet another drug violation, which had dragged on through this weekâs reinstatement.
That means itâs been over three years since Williams has played in an NFL game, and whether heâs still in football shape and what kind of training heâs been doing in the years since is unknown. But, he is welcome to join a team this offseason thanks to his conditional reinstatement, which begs just one question: Which squad will take a chance on the formerly potential-filled, and only 25-year old, running back?
If anything, youâd expect him to accept a somewhat low and short-term âprove-itâ deal which could certainly benefit the Eagles given their cap-space situation. But whether they are willing to bring in someone who â like others on the roster â will need development, or rather look for someone with proven experience, is yet to be seen.
We all know that Howie Roseman can be full of surprises, though.

#GivingNEWSDay Is Here!
This is a story about a tiny newsroom with a mighty idea. We launched the Hidden City Daily in 2011 to bring context and investigation to reporting on the changing city. Since then resources have dictated that we focus less on breaking news itself and more on perspective and analysis.
But today, #GivingNewsDay, that could literally change. Thanks to the generosity of NewsMatch and the Wyncote Foundation, your donation to our Fall Campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar. That means with your support weâll start 2019 with $70,000 in the bank instead of $35,000 and the capacity to add more talented journalists to our freelance roster. In other words, youâll be giving news.
This isnât to say we arenât proud of our reporting this past year. In fact, weâve been thrilled to see some of our favorite writers from the Philadelphia Inquirer and other media outlets picking up on stories weâve covered on the Hidden City Daily first. When we see them take on a subject our writers have already covered it validates our journalistic efforts, given the vastly different financial resources our staff are working with respectively. Rest assured that your tax deductible donation to the Hidden City Daily goes directly to our writers and editors. We maximize every dollar we receive to give our readers thoughtful reporting and outstanding content for FREE. No paywall, no advertisement clutter, no sponsored content.Â
This year we followed the wrecking ballâfrom Christian Street Baptist to Creswell Iron Works to Webbâs Department Store. We dove deep into the conflict over the future of the Boys and Girls Club of Germantown. We interviewed the software engineer who figured out the scope of the Cityâs revenue loss from the Ten-Year Tax Abatement. We examined the cultural significance of updating the Academy of Natural Scienceâs famous dioramas. We took a long look at the complex world of Malcolm X Park in West Philly and the life of World Manufacturingâs factory in Kensington.
And weâll end the year with our most comprehensive look at demolition yetâcoming soon.
In the âGood Newsâ department, we are honored that the Fisher Fine Arts Library of the University of Pennsylvania has acquired the entire Hidden City Daily archive for perpetual, public access. This means that thousands of articles on Philly architecture, development, culture, history, and design will be preserved for the use of students and scholarsâa lasting legacy you have helped create.
Now we ask you help us reach a new level with a heightened capacity to report more breaking news on what matters.
Give now and have your donation doubled. Give the news!

Mindfulness Expert Mallika Chopra Will Lead Meditation at This Philly Wellness Festival
Wellness
The B Inspired Inspirefest is scheduled for November 10.
Visit the B Inspired Inspirefest for a day of mindfulness and wellness. Photograph courtesy B Inspired.
As the seasons change, the inspiration to live your fullest life may dwindle. The cold weather can make you long for those worry-free summer days when getting to the gym (or even outside) was easier than ever. If you feel like youâre stuck in a rut, heading out to B Inspiredâs second annual Inspirefest on Saturday may be exactly what you need.
B Inspired is a collaborative community that focuses on exercise, wellness, and meditation to enhance the success of other women. Liz Harris and Amy Carolla co-founded the venture in 2017 after the two mothers had a conversation about creating a âteamâ of women to support one another throughout the Philadelphia region. Together, the women believe that all things are possible through positive, grounded energy and offer a supportive place for women with interests in business, culture, and philanthropy.
This yearâs three-hour-long event will be a morning of exercise and meditation with opportunities to learn about the newest wellness trends. Special guest Mallika Chopra â daughter of alternative medicine advocate and author Deepak Chopra â will guide the crowd in meditation as well as speak about her two books, Living with Intent and Just Breathe (her most recent book, which teaches children about meditation).
âAmy and I are so thrilled to be hosting our fourth overall wellness festival, Inspirefest,â says Harris. âOur family-friendly wellness festival provides such a special opportunity for our community to hear from the wise and inspiring, Mallika Chopra, and experience exercise, meditation, and other wellness features!â
If you need a break to refuel throughout the day, Inspirefest will also include a marketplace where you can shop for healthy foods, as well as fitness clothing, essential oils, jewelry, and more. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 10, at 9 a.m. at Balance Chestnut Hill. You can find tickets â which are $50 for the general public, $25 for students and educators â here.

âHe Was My Heroâ: West Point Cadet Killed In Accident Identified As New Jersey Native Christopher Morgan
WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) â The 22-year-old cadet killed in a vehicle rollover during a summer training exercise was identified by the U.S. Military Academy on Friday as a standout wrestler who was studying law.
Cadet Christopher J. Morgan of West Orange, New Jersey, died at the scene after a tactical vehicle carrying cadets overturned in wooded terrain Thursday morning. Nineteen cadets and two soldiers operating the vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries. All had been treated and released by Friday, according to the academy.
West Point officials said they donât know the cause of the crash . The investigation will include a standard probe by the Armyâs Criminal Investigation Division, a review by a safety team from Alabamaâs Fort Rucker and a re-creation of the scene aided by the New York State Police, according to West Point.
Morgan was a law and legal studies major in the Class of 2020. He was a recruited athlete and a standout member of the Army wrestling team.
On Friday, his father called his son a hero, as he held a framed photo of the cadet outside their New Jersey home.
âHe was my first son. He was an inspiration to me and my family. He was my hero,â Christopher C. Morgan told the New York Post. âI miss talking to him, I miss his smile, I miss hearing about what heâs doing. No father should have to bury their child.â
His coach at West Point described the cadet as âa talented, hardworking, and determined athlete who loved his sport.â
âChris had an infectious personality with a smile big enough to fill any room, and a heart big enough to love everyone around him. He made everyone around him better and he will be greatly missed,â wrestling coach Kevin Ward said in a West Point news release.
Morganâs interest in the military stretches back to his time at West Orange High School, where he was part of the schoolâs Air Force ROTC, according to a 2015 story on the online news site TAPinto West Orange. Morgan, who also was co-captain of the schoolâs football team, told the news site that while he planned to wrestle at West Point, he was more interested in academics.
âIâm interested in political science, foreign affairs, and global economy,â Morgan said in 2015. âWhether or not I remain in the Army as a career officer, I want to work in Homeland Security.â
West Point cadets will hold a vigil Friday night to honor Morgan. A memorial ceremony and private funeral service will be held at the academy 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of New York City next week.
âCadet Morgan represented the highest and best values of New Jersey,â New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said in a news release.

4 Shot Execution-Style After Being Led Into Philly Basement
What to Know
Two men and two women were found shot in the head in the basement of a home along Malcolm Street in Southwest Philadelphia Monday.
The four were killed execution-style after being "led down to the basement," Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.
No word yet on possible motive or suspect(s).
Four people were found shot to death execution-style in the basement of a Southwest Philadelphia home Monday.
Each person found just after noon in a home along the 5100 block of Malcolm Street, just off Baltimore Avenue, was shot in the head, Philadelphia police said.
The victims, two men and two women, all appeared to be in their 30s, Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.
Preliminary information made it appear the victims were "led down to the basement" then shot in the head, Ross told reporters Monday. Sources told NBC10 there was no forced entry into the home, no signs of a struggle, no weapons recovered and no witnesses.
The two men are believed to be cousins who were living in the home while it was being renovated, Ross said. While police identified three of the four victims, they did not release their names. Family members told NBC10 the two men were raised as brothers and described them as loving fathers.
A neighbor heard loud bangs late Sunday night and thought it to be construction work at the property, Ross said. Investigators believe those sounds could have been the fatal gunshots.
Police came out for a wellness check at the home Monday after a relative found the door slightly ajar, investigators said.
No word yet on a motive for the shooting or possible suspect(s).

'God put me on that road for a reason:' Heroic nurse helped state trooper who was shot
Sherice Richardson said, "God put me on that road for a reason at that time."
WTVD-TV reports, she was driving on Haynes Road in Wilson COunty, North Carolina on Monday night when she came across Trooper Daniel Harrell's car.
Harrell had just been shot.
Richardson says she was headed to Rocky Mount to pick up her toddler.
"I left the house at about 5:15 and I go on some country roads," Richardson said. "I was going around the curve, passing blue lights and so I slowed down some more, then I got out of the car that's when I seen the bullet holes in the windshield. I didn't know it at the time but when I got to the car, he just had blood coming from his face and I was like 'Oh my God, are you OK?' and all I could hear him say was 'I'm hit, I'm hit.' I was like we need to give him help so I called 911."
Luckily for Trooper Harrell, Richardson is a registered nurse. "He had gauze in his car so I instructed another bystander to put pressure on his face while I was on the phone with EMS," she said. "He was able to hold it himself actually and I sat there and comforted him."
Richardson said she waited until EMS arrived.
"It was weird," she said. "You're sitting here with someone that is supposed to protect you and he's down but you've got to do something. I'm just thankful. I had him in my prayers. I'm just grateful he made it out so fast."
Harrell was released from the hospital earlier Wednesday.

âTheyâre So Disrespectfulâ: Philadelphia Police Investigating After Several Teens Steal Items, Throw Ice At Wawa Customers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) â Police are investigating after several teens stormed into a Philadelphia Wawa on Wednesday afternoon, stealing several items and throwing ice at customers. The chaotic scene unfolded at the Society Hill store on the 500 block of South 2nd Street around 3:45 p.m.
For the second time in less than a week teenagers stormed into a South Street business. Workers are fed up and want these âdisrespectfulâ teens punished.
âTheyâre so disrespectful. They have no morals at all,â Fred Bedford, who works on South Street, said.
Bedford works at Head House Flats and says this is nothing new for the area.
âWhat happened was they ran into the store like they always do, but then when they come out, they lay their bikes on the ground and then they come out pockets full, water, everything. Take what they want, come running out the store, knocking people over, whoeverâs in their way, get out of my way. Thatâs what they do and they will knock you down. They will make sure that they get on their bikes and start running off,â he said.
âLife Or Death Situationâ: Questions Remain As Hahnemann University Hospital Announces Transfer Of Residents, Fellows To Tower Health
Bedford says he saw about seven kids on their bicycles, causing a commotion Wednesday.
According to police, the teens already started to disperse by the time officers were able to get there. Itâs a problem that Philadelphia police have been dealing with throughout the summer.
Just last week, a Walgreens was looted on the 1800 block of South Street by 60 teens and a 46-year-old customer was assaulted on the Fourth of July.
Residents who work on South Street say they canât understand why people would choose to loot businesses with their free time.
âTheyâre not older, theyâre young kids,â Adilen Padilla, who works on South Street, said. âSo itâs shocking that theyâre doing it, just to be on social media or whatever.â
Police Release Identity Of Suspect Wanted For Punching Woman In Face During Attempted Abduction In Center City
While police are working on tracking down the kids responsible, those who work on South Street say more needs to be done.
âHard to catch those kids on bikes,â Bedford said. âBut what the police need to do is have bicycle cops down here to catch them. They would catch them, throw them in jail, have their parents come get them, fine their parents about $250, $300. I bet you it would stop all that.â
No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.
Police have posted curfew signs on the outside of the store to remind anyone under the age of 18 not to be out on the streets during the week.

Trump administration moves to escalate census lawsuits to Supreme Court
The Trump administration is taking steps to move the legal fight over its controversial plan to add a question about citizenship status to the 2020 census to the U.S. Supreme Court.
According to a court filing submitted Friday, attorneys at the Justice Department â which is representing the administration in the six lawsuits around the country over the hotly contested question â are preparing to appeal recent orders by lower courts for the depositions of two key Trump administration officials behind the question: Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, and Justice Department official John Gore.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs in the two lead cases have been gearing up to question Ross and Gore in their final weeks of evidence gathering. A potential trial for the two New York cases is set to start on Nov. 5 at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
But in the administrationâs request to U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman, its lawyers asked to block all remaining depositions and document requests for those two cases âpending reviewâ by the Supreme Court.
Read the Sept. 28, 2018 Letter Motion to Stay Discovery Pending Supreme Court Review here.
The Trump administration is challenging Furmanâs order allowing the plaintiffsâ attorneys to question Ross, who oversees the Census Bureau as the head of the Commerce Department. Ross announced in March that he approved the Justice Departmentâs request to add a citizenship question to forms for the upcoming national head count. On Friday, a judge on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals put his deposition on hold while the appeals court reviews the administrationâs request to block it.
Earlier this week, a three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit upheld Furmanâs order for the deposition of Gore. He leads the Justice Departmentâs civil rights division, which argues that it needs responses to the citizenship question in order to better enforce the Voting Rights Actâs protections against discrimination of racial and language minorities.
The plaintiffs, which include dozens of states, cities and other groups that want the question removed, claim that Ross misused his authority and discriminated against immigrant communities of color by ordering the 2020 census to inquire about U.S. citizenship status â a topic the Census Bureau has not asked all U.S. households since 1950.
Critics of the question point to Census Bureau research suggesting that asking about citizenship status could discourage households with noncitizens, including unauthorized immigrants, from participating in the once-a-decade head count of every person living in the U.S. as required under the Constitution.
The Trump administration argues that deposing Ross and Gore is not necessary to resolve these lawsuits, and that the courts should instead rely on the record of internal memos, emails and other documents already released by the administration.
âThe validity of the Secretaryâs decision is properly judged on that objective record, without inquiry into Secretary Rossâs deliberative process and any subjective reasons he might have had for favoring the reinstatement of a citizenship question,â the Justice Department attorneys wrote in their request for the 2nd Circuit to block Rossâ deposition.
But Judge Furman has ruled, in part, that the officials should be deposed because of documents suggesting that better enforcement of the Voting Rights Act was not the main driver behind the push for a citizenship question.
âSecretary Ross must sit for a deposition because, among other things, his intent and credibility are directly at issue in these cases,â Furman wrote in an opinion filed last week.
As NPR has reported, an internal email exchange released as part of the lawsuits provided an early indication that the Trump administration was preparing to defend the citizenship question at the Supreme Court months before the Justice Department formally submitted its request for the question in December 2017.
âSince this issue will go to the Supreme Court,â Commerce Department official Earl Comstock wrote to Ross in an August 2017 email discussing a citizenship question, âwe need to be diligent in preparing the administrative record.â
Ross later wrote back: âwe should be very careful, about everything, whether or not it is likely to end up in the SC.â

Feel like giving back this holiday season? Here's 10 Philly organizations that need your help
In Philadelphia, thereâs no shortage of need to help people facing economic hardships. See: the stagnant poverty rate, increasing hunger, a difficult-to-navigate affordable housing crisis.
Thankfully, there are also a wealth of nonprofits and other social service organizations eager to step in year-round â and especially on holidays associated with meals, comfort and community.
But it takes a heck of a lot of time and planning to make such events run smoothly.
In preparation for each yearâs Thanksgiving service, Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission (SBRM), for instance, begins its outreach to local business, churches, schools and community partners in late July to begin coordinating sites for its food drive to stock the Thanksgiving pantry.
âEach year, we refine the plan made the year before, so this year we have 140 years of planning invested into our food drive and Thanksgiving meal,â said Elizabeth Hefner, SBRMâs director of advancement. (The nonprofit was founded in 1878.) âIn early September, we share our shopping list and all of our food drive partners begin collecting items. This is also when we share our food drive needs on social media, in emails, and with all of our supporter to really get the word out.â
The food drive brings in nearly a million pound of food, Hefner said. In 2017, SBRN was able to serve more than 300 people, and expects to serve even more this year â and the meal is open to anyone and everyone. Volunteers and staff will spend more than 20 hours planning and cooking the Thanksgiving meal.
Julio Arroyo, SBRMâs director of food services, has served more than one million meals at the rescue mission, Hefner said. Arroyo begins planning the Thanksgiving meal menu in early October and begins cooking two days before Thanksgiving in addition to serving SBRMâs normal three meals each day.
SBRM also hosts 30 to 40 volunteers each year to help prepare, decorate their dining room and serve the Thanksgiving meal. While the org does have all of its volunteer opportunities filled for the upcoming holiday, it needs volunteers every other day of the year, too.
âWe rely on volunteers to sustain our work every day of the year, as they make up 70 percent of our workforce,â Hefner said. âWe cannot do this work without volunteers.â
People who would like to volunteer with SBRM should email [email protected] or call 215-922-6400 x 1007 for more information.
###
If youâre the type who enjoys helping others during this time of year, there are other opportunities to volunteer throughout the holiday season:
Each year, the religious and boxing org holds a community Thanksgiving meal for those residing in the Kensington area. The day is filled with fellowship, good food, music and much more. This will be Rockâs 10th year hosting the meal at its ministry and is always seeking donations and volunteers.
If youâre interested in helping out, know that space is filling up quickly. Throughout the day, Rock has between 200 to 300 volunteers assisting. You can register here or reach out to Rockâs Thanksgiving coordinator, Paul Hurlock, at [email protected] or 215-913-9035.
Presented by ACME Markets and Parx Casino, the annual John DeBella Turkey Drop calls itself âthe largest one day food gathering event in Philadelphia.â Donations are collected to benefit Cityteam Philadelphia, an organization that provides holiday meals to families in the region.
Turkey and monetary donations will be collected on Tuesday, Nov. 20 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Collection locations will be at ACMEs around the tri-state area, as well as the Kimmel Center. You can also donate online.
Wells Fargo and Philabundance are working together this holiday season to collect nonperishable food items for those in need. Through Dec. 31, Philadelphians will be able to donate items at different Wells Fargo branches around the city.
There will also be a mobile, pop-up food bank visiting locations such as the Wells Fargo Center, Dilworth Park and Headhouse Square where contributions to the food bank can be made. Last year, more than 5,295 pounds of non-perishable food items were delivered to local food banks and pantries, providing almost 4,413 meals.
The West Philadelphia nonprofit is looking for donors to provide 20 additional Thanksgiving meals. If interested, there a few different ways that a person can help those who are less fortunate this holiday season:
You can donate a full Thanksgiving meal basket. In addition to turkey, you can include items such as stuffing, mac and cheese, cornbread, canned vegetables, sweet potatoes and the like.
You can also make a monetary donation through Nov. 19. A full Thanksgiving meal can be funded with $40. You can also mail in a donation to 35 N. 60th Street.
The hunger alleviation nonprofit held its annual Pie in The Sky fundraiser to not only invite volunteers to help in preparing and delivering meals to people with life-threatening illnesses, but also to benefit its Thanksgiving meal program. (Read about this authorâs recent visit to a pie-baking day here.)
You can find more information on MANNA volunteer opportunities here or by calling 215-496-2662.
The nonprofit published a list of locations where you can donate your meal-serving time this holiday season, including on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
At the end of the Thanksgiving Day parade, the civic engagement nonprofit will be collecting items for people experiencing homelessness at Thomas Paine Plaza. Items needed include socks, underwear and snacks. Since the drive is starting directly after the parade, keep in mind that you might want to give yourself some extra time to make it to the plaza because of traffic.
The homelessness nonprofit is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Day service at its 1515 Fairmount Ave. location at 10 a.m. The nonprofit still needs people to help with music and readings, but itâs a good idea to call ahead. You can reach out to Will Oâ Brien at 215-232-7272, ext. 3047 or [email protected].
The soup kitchenâs volunteer roster is full for the Thanksgiving holiday, but they have some spots open around Christmastime and will be serving on Dec. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 pm and from 4 to 6:30 pm on Dec. 26, 27 and 28. Those interested in helping out on those days can reach out to St. Francisâ volunteer coordinator, Sister Leslie â [email protected].

With Carson Wentz Locked Into A New Extension, The Pressure Should Be Off
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) â Carson Wentz should not have a care in the world after signing a four-year contract extension worth a reported $132 million, which includes $107 million in guaranteed money. Now that itâs done, Wentz shouldnât feel any pressure at all.
The Eagles are stacked offensively. Howie Roseman has made sure all of the proper pieces are in place when the Eagles kick off 2019.
At the hub will be Wentz, whoâs reportedly looked strong during OTAs. More importantly, heâs healthy.
âThe Birds Are Betting Heavy On Wentzâ: Why Extending Carson Wentz Was Risk Worth Taking For Eagles
He played in such pain last year that it altered his mechanics and his ability to be âCarson Wentz,â the Teflon quarterback who was able to escape seemingly impossible situations that translated into big plays in 2017.
The contract extension assures a happier quarterback who faced some questions this offseason about his health, and he appears to have come out stronger.
Heâs a year older, and hopefully, a year wiser when it comes to protecting his body.
âThereâs a lot of expectations internally with us,â Eagles Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz said. âObviously, itâs early, itâs June. But you look around the locker room, in terms of talent, Iâve never been on a team like this. From the top to the bottom of the roster, we have guys competing at a high level.â
Carson Wentz Speaks For First Time Since Signing $128 Million Contract Extension With Eagles
âFor a lot of guys, this is their fourth year in the system,â Ertz added. âThe talent we have is so complementary to one another, as an offense, we set really high standards for ourselves. Itâs up to us to execute. We have a lot of room to improve. Everyone here is focused on winning games. No one is focused on stats or anything.â
Despite the money, Wentz will still feel pressure â with perhaps the most coming internally from No. 11 himself.
This is Wentzâs team now. Nick Foles is gone.
The Eagles are a team capable of winning 14 games or more this year.
With a happier, financially solvent quarterback, it looks very possible.
