I personally think this piece should be named the powerpuff girls.

Theseus has been married… A Lot. Some of those relationships simply ended in average, normal ways, (especially when many of his lovers realized they could not compete with the king’s infatuation with the minotaur who he slew so many years ago). Others ended in heartbreak or bloodshed (Antiope betrayed her Amazon sisters for Theseus, but when they were together they enabled one another’s worst habits. And Phaedra did not marry him out of love, but rather a desire to escape from a home she felt unwelcome in- only for that emotion to follow her to Athens, where a series of tragedies would unfold).  Theseus’ final relationship while he was still alive was with Pirithous, his best friend whom he did Not have a very healthy relationship with. Pirithous and himself were very similar to one another in a lot of ways, and after the deaths of his wife and oldest son, Theseus sort of allowed himself to return to some of the bad habits of his youth. When Pirithous’ own wife, Laodamia, died while still young, Theseus joined Pirithous on a quest to the underworld to reclaim her soul from Hades. This quest ended in complete failure, and resulted in Theseus and Pirithous becoming trapped within the underworld. Theseus’ cousin, Heracles, was later able to rescue him, but Pirithous had to be left behind. The whole ordeal caused Theseus to A. view himself as sort of a curse when it came to relationships, and B. re-evaluate a Lot of his life choices. He decided he wanted to try and be… better! As a person, as a king. He could not undo the past but he could at least create a more positive future. But then he returned to Athens, found his cousin Menestheus had taken the throne (he had been gone for so long! Everyone thought he’d died), essentially self-exiled to Skyros and died there all in essentially a matter of days. A string of bad luck for sure, but also all partly his own fault <3 He died before he could make things right on the surface world, which is why he’s trying to do things right in the afterlife, but… he often feels like it’s already too late for that. What does it matter if he becomes a better person when he’s already dead?
