Canine Parvovirus This is a virus that can affect other dogs through direct or indirect contact with their stool/poo. This infection can be prevented by giving your dog proper vaccination. On the other hand the chances of the dog mortality rate is 91% if the dog is untreated. This virus may infect other mammals such as wolves, cats, foxes and skunks. Signs This disease usually shows within 3 to 7 days. This includes: lethargy - If you notice that dog is showing lack of energy fever - diarrhea - This is a condition that the feces of the dog is watery or with blood vomiting - Diarrhea and vomiting upsets the balance of electrolyte which results to dehydration. There would another infection to arise due to weakened immune system. You may notice that the dog will have a distinctive odor in the later stages of this virus. Treatment ------ The chances of the dog survival is depending on : - When CPV was diagnosed - The age  of the dog - How aggressive the treatment This treatment will maining focus on extensive hospitalization because of severe dehydration and damages to the intestines and bone marrow. Treatment that should be given: * Crystallion IV fluids / colloids * antinausea injections * broad-spectrum antibiotic injections  - Note: This doesn't mean that the dog will be cured and survive if the dog will be hospitalized Do-Parvovirus affect humans? The answer is NO! Only parvovirus B19 infects humans. Which means a person cannot get the virus from his/her dog. In the same way dog or cat cannot get parvovirus B19 from an infected person. Prevention and decontamination Prevention is the only way to make sure that your pet is healthy since diseases are contagious. Vaccination should be given starting at 7-8 weeks of age. Boosters every 3-4 weeks until age 16. NEVER give vaccines to Pregnant dogs this will result to aborted puppies or worst the mother dog will get very sick. This virus can survive in feces/dog poo and other organic material like soil for upto 1 year. This virus can survive in very low and  high temperatures. The only disinfectant that can kill the virus is BLEACH. First dilute the bleach solution needs to 1 bleach : 30 water to kill parvovirus. Leave mixture in contact with contaminated area for about 10 minutes. ---- Baby dogs should be vaccinated in series of doses. * From the earliest time that immunity came from mother dog until after the passive immunity is gone. * Puppies 16weeks up - 3 vaccination with an interval of 3 - 4 wks. Dogs who recovers from CPV2 still remains contagious until three to six weeks. You need to make your neighborhood aware about the infected animal . Will the fetus in the womb gets infected? Yes, this infection may be present if a pregnant dog is having a CPV2. The adult may create an immunity upto no clinical signs of disease. Unfortunately the virus already went to the placenta and infected the fetus. Some abnormalities will occur to the fetus. Can are some remedies that I can do? 1. Hydrate your dog : Give them 1/2  bowl of water:  1/2  Pedialyte. If the dog is very weak. The only way is to give it some IV fluids. 2. Check the level of hydration: Lift the skin above the shoulder blades. If the skin snaps back into place it is good. If not immediately give water 3. Give palatable food - Canned baby food (NO onion or garlic ) 4. Water the food - If dog won't eat. Fill the dropper with liquid mix with dry food. 5. Raise the glucose level - Put some Karo syrup to bring back his glucose level. 6. Check the gums - Pink - this is a good sign White , Grayish or Dark red gums - Dog's life in is danger Press the gums with your finger If it will not return to it's normal color for within seconds. Firstly, shih tzu can't eat the same food as other dogs. Shih tzu is known for it's various health concerns and some are controlled by using the right diet.

Raisins and Grapes – gives abdominal pain, vomiting and can damage kidneys

Macadamia nuts – cause kidney stones

Onions – affect the red blood cells and can cause anaemia

Sweets and candies – contain an artificial sweetener that increases insulin production

Mushrooms – give abdominal pain

Raw egg  - can have bacteria

Cow’s milk -  hard to digest and can cause diarrhea

Garlic – affects the red blood cells
