Symbols are a major screen reader breaker! Fancy symbols are also often closed symbols, so honestly, if you really wanna use symbols, use the standard QWERTY keyboard symbols!

MOGAIblr unfortunately has a rampant inaccessibility issue, so if this helps even one "big" blog be a bit more accessible, I'll be very happy.

Whenever neopronouns are offered at a job for pronoun selection, even if they aren't mine I'm going to choose them.

I'd rather be more representation for neopronoun users in the wild than settle for traditional pronouns that also aren't mine.

Plus my real neopronouns are too obscure, for those that'd look at my pronoun pin, they may not even register that they're pronouns.

For non-neopronoun users, the reason for the majority of neopronoun users being online is, harassment, bullying, and humiliation.

"It's an online identity anyways, no one in real life uses these" please put thought into why that is. It's not as if online is absent of these factors either, but it's a safer distance away from them.

In addition to this, it is highly inappropriate to defend neopronoun users and any identity using "they're young", "they'll grow out of it" or "they're all children". Imagine defending any other group of people using this language.

Stop moving the goal post as well, first it's "This is a tumblr trend" but when neoprn users tell you neopronouns can be traced back all the way to the 14 century, it's "who said being old made them valid, it's dumb".

Hey since it's getting colder in the US for the next couple months here's your reminder that a lot of physically disabled people who use mobility aids are going to get stuck inside because of snow and ice. This is your reminder that the world, while it is always inaccessible, is about to become even more so especially for those who use wheelchairs and electric chairs. If you have a friend who uses a wheelchair or an electric chair please check in on them and see if they perhaps need some groceries or even just a visit (make sure they know you're coming especially if they're immunocompromised.)

before you choose to use a mobility aid you need to weigh the pros and cons of using one. there are drawbacks to every single mobility aid. there is no such thing as a harmless mobility aid. mobility aids are not the right choice for everyone and it's important that people emphasize that when suggesting that people try them. mobility aids can permanently damage your joints and it's important that people emphasize that when suggesting them.

mobility aids need to be an informed decision.

so many people have permanent damage to their bodies that they regret because people online told them to try a mobility aid and that there were no downsides. there are downsides.

a mobility aid is only the right choice when the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. it takes information for someone to know whether they would benefit enough from a mobility aid to make it worth it. when you tell someone that there are no problems with mobility aids, that doctors are all lying about the damage they do, you deny people information. doctors can be wrong and can deny people mobility aids incorrectly but there's truth in the fact that they damage joints, change gaits, and cause muscle atrophy among other problems.

and on that note doctor/PT/OT guidance is important when it's available. using mobility aids that have been sized incorrectly, even for a short time, can cause enough damage that mobility aids are no longer an option for that person. using mobility aids incorrectly, even for a short time, can cause enough damage that mobility aids are no longer an option for that person. failing to tell people that they need to learn how to use and size their mobility aid correctly (preferably with a doctor/PT/OT's help) causes real harm to people.

Blind Tumblr users: don’t get the latest iOS app update!

I just updated my tablet to the newest version of the tumblr app for iOS and it completely broke screen reader access for both VoiceOver and Spoken Content. This has happened in the past already, so I will file a support ticket and copy-paste my text from last time, but this really sucks. I sincerely hope this doesn’t affect all screen reader users, but I’m unsure how they could program this bug in a way it only affects me. If you rely on a screen reader to use the tumblr app, I’d advice to not get the latest update to be on the safe side.

When I say “completely broke access”, what I mean is that no posts on my dash or on individual blogs get read or recognized at all. No plain text, alt text, tags, etc. Note count and buttons still work though.

If you also run into this bug, here’s my advice. If anyone has something more useful, please tell me

Use the browser web version, which still works for me

Interestingly, if you save a post to your drafts and click on “edit” the post text seems to get read correctly. This might be a work-around for some people.

If you have the latest version but your screen reader didn’t break, also please tell me! I would be fascinated to know if this bug is only affecting some people
