imo one of supernatural's greatest weaknesses is what i'm going to call its locational homogeneity. like. obviously this is largely a side effect of filming a show set all over the united states in the same small area of canada for 15 years but there's just a certain sameness to every location and every episode that's uncanny at best and breaks immersion at worst. they should have gone all in on southern gothic horror and spooky old northeastern coastal towns and rural midwestern isolation and instead it's just episode after episode of identical suburbs with arbitrary location titles slapped over them. the seasons never change. the weather is always mild, never with extreme enough temperature or precipitation to require a change from the standard jacket-over-flannel-over-tee costuming even when we see snow on the ground. this episode is set in the summer in idaho. no, wait, it's set in the winter in kentucky. this episode is set in the summerfallwinterspring in kansachusettohiowa. sam and dean travel all over the country and yet stay completely still. supernatural shows us a massive world and it does not turn and absolutely no one lives in it.

we talk about pre series psychic sam but i want to talk about how this relates to his prophetic nightmares. sam who wakes up screaming at the top of his lungs in the middle of the night, dean spending many a grueling night holding down his thrashing brother who wont. snap. out. of. it. sam who doesn't know it, but he's dreaming of the cage. concerned teachers call in john to discuss graphic images of torture his son is drawing in class. sam who got one session of mandatory therapy and wont stop drawing a strange creature with staring eyes and claws and animal features, calling him "satan".

How does a guy like sam become a monster the show asks right before sam shows up holding a gun to gordon’s head for threatening dean
How does a guy like sam become a monster the show asks right before sam shows up holding a gun to gordon’s head for threatening dean to get to sam. because sam is being hunted like a monster. beaten like a monster. told he’s a monster. and nobody’s a monster until they’re treated like one

like I cannot emphasise enough that a major point of repo man is that what makes coping with his hell trauma impossible for Sam to handle isn't the intensity of what happened or the hallucinations or the time but rather the idea that he is not actually a victim and that he wanted it.

the fact that when john comes back he’s always in a separate car from sam and dean is genuinely one of the most important parts of season one for me. “i want us to be a family again” “but things will never be the way they were before”

like it literally makes me rabid. i want to see sam angry so fucking bad. they never let him be angry with dean like real ugly out of control below the belt fury after the kripke era and it makes me insane. i can only watch sam take the high road while dean gets to be immature and self absorbed and Plot Relevant and make mistakes and never have them held against him so many times. over and over after season 5 we just watch sam get more and more ground down while the people around him treat him with less and less respect and still bring up mistakes he made years earlier that were never entirely his fault and that he's more than atoned for and for god's sakes all i want is for him to get MAD again. not tired not understanding not sad i want to see him snap and catch everyone who is used to him being the doormat off guard and get ANGRY. on his OWN behalf. because god knows i am!!!!!
