i'm sorry that happened to you and i didn't mean to discount your experience - i just haven't seen that and i only ever see the word used in posts like yours (i.e. listed alongside theyfab which i have seen used in really vile ways). is this something you find happens often? i've just never seen it before and i'm curious if your experiences might shed some light on how i could have missed it

Proposal for new fandom etiquette:

If you read a fic because it was linked/recced somewhere, you leave a comment saying "came from XXX" and that comment doesn't need to include anything else.

Because when all of a sudden there's a lot of activity on one particular fic I WANNA KNOW WHY!!!!!

A long time ago I was in a typography class and I had an assignment to draw a word out of its material. Like writing "Rock" and drawing it to make it look like it's carved from stone. I chose "Hair" and I was proud enough of the result that I ended up posting it online to Twitter. Whoever I showed it to online, I got a weird reaction like "Oh...cool." which was strange cuz I was expecting to get complimented on it. It turned out that no one thought it was a drawing. For months, everyone I showed it to thought that I was playing with wet hair clippings in my spare time like some nasty little freak.

now that we're so many years - coming up on an entire decade in a little over a month - removed from the initial reveal i think there's an uncomfortable conversation to be had about how Davepetasprite isn't just the "first canon trans character" in Homestuck but is also, in retrospect, pretty clearly the first character to adopt a new name as part of the process of adopting a new identity, in such a way that makes "Davesprite" very overtly their deadname.

and I'm not even saying this to sit here and be like oh you're a Bad Bad Fucking Person if you deadname fictional characters or even to imply that it's Morally Compromised to have a preference for one version of a character over another like these are ultimately harmless nothings and I have no desire to make myself morally superior to anyone else over strider discourse. but I do genuinely think the way people talk about Davesprite as an item distinct from Davepeta, or how much they preferred Davesprite or how much they think Davepeta "ruined" the character should be viewed in the same way we would view similar comments about John / June. or even similar comments people make RIGHT NOW about Roxy!! we simply live in a time with enough hindsight that those of us who are serious about transgender themes and representation in this story ought to start treating Davepeta not just as a character who is "technically" transgender but as the genuine and considered evolution of a character we have been following since the comic's early few acts, in the same vein and worthy of the same respect as the evolutions you want to see happen to other characters you like in the story's future
