“Or is that just your way of saying that you don`t trust me, uncle Sammy?”
Tumblr media
“No.” He paused, brows arching. She thought she was going to get him with the ‘uncle’ bit--he wasn’t going to fall for it this time! “It’s my way of saying I like my head on my shoulders.”

“Oh come on, Sam, it wasn’t that bad.” Steve chuckled, shrugging a bit. Thankfully, it wouldn’t be as crazy as last time, he wanted to do something a bit calmer than their last escapade. “You, me, Charlie, and Chief getting drinks. It’s nothing more than that. It’s all on me, okay?”
Tumblr media
“’Nothing more’ you say. We’ll see. But since you’re paying for it, I can’t refuse, can I? I hope you have enough on you. It’s still early. Charlie’s probably not even drunk yet.”

he has a point ( he usually does, in one language or another ) but it doesn’t seem to change steve’s mind, at least not right away. he presses his lips together, dips his head, and reaches up to scratch along his stubbly jaw. “yeah, i know you would take it,” he begins slowly, teeth catching the inside of his cheek. that, he thinks, is why sameer tends to be happier than he does. he takes what life gives him and works with it. steve looks at everything with the gaze of a pessimist— what can go wrong?
“what if—” he sighs, “what if something happens? to one of us?” it’ll make it so much worse.
Tumblr media
He has to be this way. It’s what has kept him moving forward despite myriad struggles and disappointments--of which he has had many. Sameer considers Steve and then shakes his head.
“Isn’t that always a possibility? Whether we’re at war or not, something can always happen. Why should that stop you from having even the slightest shot at happiness?” Sameer settles a palm on the other’s shoulder. “Steven, I think you have a chance. You might lose it in the future, or you might not. You can die tomorrow or you might live to see old age. No one knows. But I do know if you don’t take a chance, you’ll regret it.”

          Starfire positively SQUEALED.
“Oh, yes! Yes! It would be the greatest of delights!” she chirped, clapping her hands like an excited child. And, well, battle scars and inhuman strength aside, she was still just that–a child. “Come, come, come, come!”
Taking the crook of his arm, the Tamaranean all but dragged the man over to a spot where they could sit.
“First, let us begin with your name. In the English language, it is… Sameer, yes? We do not have the name on my planet, but the CLOSEST translation would sound much the same,” she explains. “’Sameer’ would change to ‘Sami’r’.” She sounds the name out slowly, voice lilting a little at the end and hardening the ‘r’.
Tumblr media
He was a little surprised by the way she pulled him along, her eagerness amusing. He almost tripped a little upon their being seated, but quickly gained his balance upon the chair. Sameer listened nodding a little with a smile.
“That sounds very much like the actual pronunciation of my name. It is not of the English language, but a name of Arabic origin.” And now of course he had to know-- “What about yours? How do say your full name?”

“If you’re havin’ me on, Sameer, I’m gonna be right pissed with ye, I hope ye know that.” The engineer was known for having something of a fiery temper when provoked, although it was usually an ire that was reserved for stuffy officers who didn’t know their place above deck. Still, there was something oddly believable about the other man’s tale, as if deep down Montgomery wanted to believe in a miracle woman who could walk across the dead zone that divided the front. If such things could exist then perhaps they may even win this bloody war…
Taking a slow sip of his scotch, the weathered sailor leaned back in his chair looking pensive. “Truth be told, mate, I’d believe anythin’ if I thought it might put an end to this bloody fightin’… It wears a man down; right to the bone.”
Tumblr media
“I’m not trying to swindle you out of any money here, am I?” Which was what he often did when he was making up stories. That was the whole point of it. This, however, wasn’t one of those times. But considering Scott wasn’t one of his targets on a usual day, Sameer wasn’t completely certain that would make him any more believable. Talk about boy who cried wolf one too many times. “I wouldn’t be lying about this.”
He twisted the mug in his hands. “Didn’t you hear? There’s talk of there being a surrender very soon. And not that armistice that was going on. We might very well be done with all this fighting.” A pause. “If I tell you the rest, you have to promise to keep your mouth shut about it. I’m not really supposed to be telling you a thing. But you were friends with Steven, too.”

                     “And now?”
He didn’t know what Steve had told her in the midst of battle, only that she had disappeared for a while and left them to fend for themselves. As a soldier he had not questioned it, for Steve was essentially their commanding officer and they followed along whether they were curious or not. Things were different now, for all of them, he supposed, but Diana most of all. With what Steve had told him, Diana’s only link to this world was now gone.

“well, sameer, i— i don’t.” the decision is made suddenly, as if he’s put his foot down for himself. he can’t lie and say he doesn’t feel anything; he’s had it bad since the moment they met. he and samy both know it’s true. the problem is that they’re at war. they’re on a mission. the last thing any of them needs right now is to make a move on someone.
Tumblr media
“You don’t?” A terrible decision, really. Who knew how much time they had left. And if they had a future, why not take a shot at it now? In the end it amounted to the same thing. “I’ve seen the way you’ve been looking at her. This may be the only chance you have. I would take it.”

“Oh come on, Sam,” He added in a flash of the signature smile and Steve knew he probably had exactly what he had come for. No one could resist the Steve Trevor charm, it was what made him a good spy. “It’ll be fun. Trust me.”
Tumblr media
“You said that last time and as I recall it was not fun.”
It was also what had Sameer so utterly screwed when it came to talking with the other man. No matter the fact that he seemed to never have the right amount of cash for any of the endeavors he wished to pull him into.
“You have two minutes to make your case or I am out.”

Starfire gasped, her entire face lighting up with unmistakable DELIGHT.
“You mean that you would wish to learn the language of my people?”
Tumblr media
“But, of course!” The happiness with which she seemed to exude told Sameer he had been right to breech the topic with her. “I’ve already learned so many languages here on Earth. It would be a great achievement if I could add one from another planet to my repertoire. You do have to tell me all about your culture and people, as well.”

The marine engineer afforded the other man with a look that was a mixture of both incredulity and mild scepticism. “Alright, laddie, say that I do believe ye, and this lass just walked across No Man’s Land like ye say; how is it that she ain’t dead? She’d need to be swathed in steel to survive that kind of an assault!”
Tumblr media
“I saw it with my own two eyes. She had this impenetrable shield. It was like nothing I ever saw. I wouldn’t have believed it either if I wasn’t there. Just ask Charlie. He was there too. He’ll tell you the same thing. Diana was a sight to behold. I tell you, I was half in love with her when she flipped over a man at the bar, she might as well have my prayers now.”
He leaned back, taking a swig from his beer. As much fun as he was having telling that part of the story--the rest he would keep to himself. Especially considering the recent loss.
“Maybe I’ll introduce you sometime. But it might be a while.”

He visits Steve’s grave every so often. He’d lost plenty of comrades but there was something about Trevor that had got under his skin. They were friends, two spies that had worked together on more than one occasion--and sure, he had done it for money, but camaraderie had come about between them. Sameer had been caught by that charm of his, the serious, frank way Steve confronted things. And he wasn’t such a bad spy, definitely not a bad actor. Sameer thought for sure he could have been one if he wanted, not on the front lines of this ugly mess.
He might have been a little taken, a little infatuated with Steven Trevor. Nothing to act on, and nothing to consider further, but it still crushed him a little more than it might have to see that plane explode.
