How healthy is the youth of today?
Leave nothing to chance when it comes to your well-being and that of your loved ones. Here’s why every millennial should be thinking about getting a health and life insurance plan.

Be honest and ask yourself ‘how healthy are you?’ In the strive to achieve all your career goals ‘asap’, the youth of today lives by the term ‘work hard, party harder’. While there is nothing wrong with working hard, for many, it is at the cost of their health and well-being. Most of us work more than 8-9 hours for five days a week. People who work in creative fields put in a minimum of 10 hours of work every single day; sometimes even on the weekends. Freelancers juggle multiple projects and work for more than 10-14 hours a day, trying to keep up with the crazy deadlines.
The struggle is real
Millennials believe in ‘partying hard’ after a long day of work because this is how they unwind. They catch up with friends and even have casual meetings after work; usually consisting of alcohol and a whole lot of junk food. According to a recent study, this generation strives for perfectionism. The elevated expectations may be to blame for the high levels of anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide millennials are experiencing today a lot more than the previous generations. The data revealed that from 1989 to 2016, an average college student’s score for self-oriented perfectionism increased by 10%, and for socially prescribed perfectionism, it increased by as much as 32%. In a bid to achieve everything in the stipulated hours, they end up being sleep deprived, have an unhealthy diet, and almost zero physical activity.

This unhealthy work-life balance is the cause of major chronic diseases affecting the youth today. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), chronic diseases are projected to account for 53% of all deaths and over next ten years; meaning over 60 million people will die of chronic diseases. It further stated that 40 million of the 56 million global deaths in 2015 were due to non-communicable diseases, which include heart diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes.
Control your health and your finances
If these statistics have scared you (as they should), then now is a good time to take control of your health by leading a healthier lifestyle and planning your future wisely by insuring it. Insurance provides financial protection against uncertainties of life; such as untimely death, accident, property loss, and serious health issues. Many millennials are not in a hurry to buy homes or have children, so it stands to reason that many of them are also waiting longer to buy life insurance. It is easy to think that you don’t need life insurance when you’re younger and healthier, but the sooner you buy insurance, the better.
Even if you don’t have children, you probably have dependents. You might have a spouse, a long-term significant other or even your parents who you share assets with. How would their lives be affected if you were suddenly out of the picture? Could they even afford to take the necessary time off to mourn properly? Would the threat of immediate financial duress add to their stress? A healthy millennial is generally considered to be a low-risk client for a life insurance company. Therefore, you are more likely to get an affordable life insurance policy when you’re younger. If something were to happen to you, don’t leave your loved ones in more pain; plan ahead and secure their financial future as well.
How life insurance can aid you and your family financially
It is crucial to have a life insurance policy as it provides a cover in case of one’s untimely demise, where the sum assured goes to the nominee assigned. In addition, the proceeds from the life insurance policy will replace his/her income, helping the family members at least cope with the burden of medical costs incurred as well as in paying for household finances.
Try HDFC Life’s Click 2 Protect 3D Plus term insurance plan, which covers death, disability and disease with a range of plans suited to individual needs and available at affordable rates. Apart from providing financial security, this policy also helps the family’s maintain its standard of living, even in their loved one’s absence. Add to this their Critical Illness Plus Rider and increase your coverage to over 29 critical illnesses that include cancer, heart attack, kidney failure, liver diseases, loss of sight, burns, paralysis and even lung diseases, to name a few. If you’re diagnosed with any of these, the policy will provide you with a lump sum benefit. And in case you are diagnosed with a critical illness or face a permanent disability, all your future premiums will be waived off.
Take control of your life and spend some time and effort learning about such policies, after all, it’s the matter of not just your life, but that of your loved one too.
