You know what's so insanely good about this scene? It shows just how in tune CC is with WSW and how well he could read WSW from just looking at him.

All day, WSW has been receiving condolences, talking to the people who cared about his mom, some who he knew, some he likely didn't. Look at how blank he is, its like he's barely there.

I remember what this was like - having to stand there and hold in my tears and nod and grit my teeth and smile as people came up to offer empty words of comfort. I remember getting a lot of "take care of your mom" when I felt like I was barely holding myself together. I remember having to help my mom think about what to write on the obituary and death announcement, making sure there was enough food and drinks for all the guests, checking to see that each part of the program was proceeding on schedule.

WSW has just come back from the funeral and likely the subsequent cremation. It's the final day, the public mourning ceremonies are over, it's the first time he's not had to think about what comes next and suddenly he's faced with the empty echo of his childhood home and a future alone; no family, no boyfriend, no one.

In the aftermath, when grief is this new and this overwhelming, it becomes numbing. Your body stops being able to feel it, your brain can't processes, and you go through the motions in a daze, but the hurt festers. It's like a slow poison, it sits inside the center of your chest, slowly ballooning until you feel like it's going to take over the entire world. You're finally alone, and you want to cry if only to let some of the pain out, but you can't. You don't know why; did I not love them enough? Is that why the tears won't come?

And somehow, CC clocks this. Maybe his love lets him see true, or maybe the author just knows what this kind of grief is like. Because what's so amazing is that CC gives WSW an excuse to let it out, an excuse to cry, finally, that wasn't the one thing that he was really crying about. I don't know why, but making it about something else, something small and petty and insignificant (compared to the recent loss of a loved one) can sometimes break the invisible net that's wrapped around your heart.

The dam breaks, and WSW begins to cry and CC - despite the clear agony it causes him to listen to WSW's sobs - just keeps the barbs coming, and in so doing makes space for WSW to vent his grief. Because WSW has permission now, he has a reason besides his own pain to cry. Now it's something CC wants, something WSW deserves, something that can make CC 'happy'.

I don't know how to explain it, but it makes sense on an emotional level to me. It felt like the perfect way to give WSW the release he so clearly needed.

But most crucially, CC does not leave WSW alone in his grief. CC forces himself still and stern as long as he can, and when he can bare it no longer, lets himself be the protective cage where WSW can allow himself to shatter. Now that he has gotten WSW to stop trying to be strong, he offers his own strength in place of it, offers his shoulder and his arms and the care of someone who genuinely hurts to see you in pain.

He promises he won't leave WSW. He promises that WSW doesn't have to go through it alone.

And he fucking. Keeps. That. Promise.

He never gets impatient with WSW. He never belittles or scolds WSW for being caught in this cyclone of grief and missing his mom. He's just there. A steady presence, a comfort, a distraction when needed. I don't even know how to describe how lovely, how loving this is ... my heart is so full watching this.

The first time After, when you feel genuine happiness is a surreal moment. Like an echo of something you used to know but can't place because the storm you've been through has changed you on a fundamental level.

Somehow, CC gives that to WSW, too, finds a way to create literal physical distance so, for just a moment, WSW isn't being confronted constantly with endless reminders of his mom. And this isn't forever - WSW has to go back eventually, and does, but this moment in the dappled sun, with the letting go of their fight was necessary for him to go back just a little bit stronger.

I've never had a show resonate so strongly with my own experience before. It's like being seen, like being known.

I'm just so overwhelmed and broken and thankful.
