Hello Rin,
thank you for every writing tip you have shared on this plattform. We can see that you put a lot of love and thought into every article.
I hope this question wasn't already asked... Do you have any writing tips on writing fighting scenes ? Like with a sword or close combat fightings? If you already have answer it, I don't mind just having the links. Wishing you a nice day.
oh my god, first of all thank you that is so kind?? i always wonder if my unhinged rambling posts are just void-screaming or if people actually find them useful, so this means the world. thank you.
and secondly you're in luck because i have SO MANY thoughts about fight scenes (specifically grounded, close combat ones.)
i don't think i actually made a post, but i do remember getting a few questions about this but me being a procrastinator i haven't answered yet. so hopefully this post does me some justice. i'll drop my biggest tips below and maybe do a full post soon if tumblr doesn't eat me first.
basics first:
i cannot stress this enough: a good fight scene is never JUST about the choreography. you have to take characters, emotion and of course consequences into account. you are not writing a marvel movie. you're writing a moment that has meaning (for your book)
a few questions to ask yourself:
what does the character(s) want in this fight?
what do they stand to lose (besides blood and violence)
are they trying to survive? win? delay someone? impress someone? hide something?
ALWAYS know the goal. once you know that, then you can go for the cool stuff.
sword fighting tips (you're gonna need these)
distance = tension. don't think swords are only clash clash stab. footwork, spacing, baiting the opponent are all a part of sword fighting. try to have your characters circle, lunge, feint. use the space (i'll make a post listing vocabulary for fight scenes)
research about blades. a rapier fight moves very differently than a longsword brawl. daggers are close and dirty, a bit more intentional. but make it feel like a choice, not just vibes. try to think about your characters and what sword they'd use, and think about why, and about their opponent.
defensive moments reveal character. does your MC block? dodge? parry? flinch? get scratched because they're stubborn and refuse to back up? every motion should say something about them, get intentional about their movements, and try to show more than tell.
mention the weight. the sweat. the off-hand, the boot scuff. one-handed swords get heavy fast. two-handed weapons leave you exposed. details >> flash. details always.
hand-to-hand combat tips and advice
real fights are fast, messy and ugly. no one's doing spin kicks unless they trained. someone's gonna bite, or elbow, or slam a knee where it hurts. don't try to be cinematic, be brutal, realistic.
momentum matters. a strong punch means overcommitting your shoulder. that leaves your ribs open. writing combat is basically newton's laws + spicy emotion.
try to keep your sentence tight. short sentences feel fast, choppy and sudden. use that to your advantage as a writer, then when the fight slows or if there's a pause, then lengthen the prose. contrast = tension.
DO NOT, and i literally mean DO NOT describe every move. please for the love of story pacing. show us the fight through feel, and reaction. not a second-by-second log!!
example: "He swung. She ducked, too slow. Pain cracked across her cheekbone. Blood, again. Always Blood."
thats 1000x better than this:
"He lifted his right fist and brought it across in a wide arc toward her left cheek. She tried to duck but the fist connected with her face... and blah blah blah"
i'm sure you get it.
little hack i use with fighting scenes
try to write the same fight twice. once from each POV. characters notice different things, their focus shifts, their reactions diverge, etc. it's a goldmine for understanding their psyche, then weave it all together in your final scene.
also? use fights to foreshadow relationships. who protects who. who hesitates. who goes too far, and my favorite; who betrayed who.
I HOPE THIS HELPS!! i love writing fight scenes bc they are peak "show not tell" and honestly? you learn a lot about your characters when they're cornered and pissed and desperate.
if you ever need a breakdown of knife fighting choreography based on vibes and character class, just say the word. i'll be feral in five (lol)

Hello! Hope you have been well :D
I was just wondering if you were able to explain or show on how you set up your sims 4 lighting in Blender? They look insanely good!
Thankyou! <3
Hi Anon! Hope you’ve been well too ^.^ Basically, I use 3 lights — you can check them out with this link: my original light setting
But these days, I’ve been setting things up a bit differently! First, I use an HDRI to create the base lighting. Then I add two more lights: – one back light (Point), and – one side-reflecting light (Area). ++ and for Color Management in Render Properties, I use the settings shown in the screenshot below! (no Filmic, I think Standard is the best..)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So in total, I use 2 lights + the HDRI. You can download the HDRI background for free from this link!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ㄴ Here’s what my rendering screen looks like — pretty simple 😅
Tumblr media
ㄴCompletion : HDRI + Back light + Side-reflecting light + Edits ..

What to Give a Sh*t About While Editing Your Book
↳ Emotional Impact
Ask yourself: Do I actually feel something here? If a scene is technically “well-written” but emotionally flat, it’s dead weight. Your readers won’t remember your clever metaphors, but they’ll remember the way a quiet line of dialogue made their stomach drop. So yeah—give a sh*t about that.
↳ Character Motivation That Actually Makes Sense
If your characters are making decisions just because the plot needs them to… we’ve got a problem. In edits, zoom in on their choices. Are they acting like real, flawed, complex humans? Or puppets? Edit until their actions make you nod and go, “Yep. That’s exactly what that little disaster would do.”
↳ Cutting the “Almost Good” Stuff
This hurts, but it’s necessary. Some lines are nice. Pretty. Kind of smart. But if they’re not serving the story, they’ve got to go. Save them in a “kill darlings” file. Grieve if needed. But don’t let “kinda good” block the greatness trying to come through.
↳ Scene Purpose
Every scene needs to earn its place like it’s paying rent. Does it move the plot? Deepen character? Build tension? Ideally, two out of three. If the answer is “it’s vibes,” that might work for a paragraph—but not for 3,000 words. Cut. Condense. Clarify. Your future reader will thank you.
↳ Pacing That Doesn’t Bore People to Death
Look, I love a moody slow burn too. But if your story crawls for 50 pages without conflict, tension, or curiosity—your reader will ghost you. Read your scenes out loud. If you’re zoning out? So will they. Tighten that sh*t up.
↳ Dialogue That Sounds Like Real People (and Not AI)
If your characters sound like they're reading from a very polite script, it’s time to rewrite. Interruptions, unfinished thoughts, weird little phrases—those are gold. Make it messy. Make it sound like how people actually talk when they’re nervous, angry, or halfway in love and lying about it.
↳ Themes You Accidentally Nailed (and Can Now Strengthen)
Themes tend to sneak in while you’re drafting. During edits? Time to spotlight them. Don’t slap it on with a neon sign—but do lean into the emotional throughline you already created. It’s probably smarter and more beautiful than you gave yourself credit for.
↳ Your Voice
Don’t edit your weird out. Editing is for clarity, not sanding down your style until it sounds like generic internet writing. Keep the voicey bits. The odd metaphors. The lines that sound exactly like you. That’s what readers fall in love with—not perfection.
↳ Trusting That You’ll Need Multiple Rounds
This isn’t one-and-done. Your second draft will suck differently than your first. Your third might suck less, but still suck. That’s fine. It’s part of the process. What matters is that each time, it gets sharper, truer, and more you.
↳ Not Quitting Halfway Through Just Because It’s Hard
Editing is hard. But you’ve already done the impossible: you wrote a damn book. That’s massive. Now you’re just sculpting it. Don’t give up because it’s messy. Don’t panic because it’s not “there” yet. Keep showing up. Even if it’s just one scene at a time. Even if you’re crying into your tea. Especially then.

BG3 Virtual Photography Supplement: Mods and Resources
Here's some popular and useful mods I use for virtual photography! I will try to update this as I find more.
Tools
EasyCheat - Teleport to locations near and far, summon armor and items for your characters, clean the dirt off. All at the press of a button!
Lighty Lights - An incredible tool but terribly finicky. Actively being worked on.
Native Camera Tweaks - A Native Mod that allows you to unlock the camera pitch and zoom in and out of combat. It's handy for photo stuff but generally useful.
WASD Character Movement - another Native mod for WASD movement. More precise placement of characters in the field.
Remove Broken Objects - can help clean up sets.
Scribe Object Inspector and Event Logging - sometimes you need to find the IDs of objects in the game. This is an easy way to do it.
Polyamory Mod - can be useful for flag checking but I haven't used it recently. But it may have use for some.
Characters
Full Custom Companions (Hirelings) - have full custom control over hirelings. Great if you wanna add more Tavs to your shots! Have done family portraits for my Tav's family this way, it's so fun!
Recruit any NPC - Make an NPC a playable character. Can be really handy sometimes if you don't wanna do code transformations.
Appearance Edit Enhanced - if you're not using this already, you should be. Modify your characters at any time. Works great with the Custom Hirelings mod.
Transmogs and Spelltheft - identity theft! Another mod that lets you copy the appearance of characters. There was some special case scenario that I used an old version of this but I don't recall what that is anymore. Listing it here anyway.
Effects
Pretty Particles - I've only used this once but if you combine it with Depth of Field, you can use it to get some really pretty bokeh effects. Also, blood and sweat in varying degrees/combinations.
No Annoying VFX - a series of mods that will remove the effects that you may not want for a shot. Like casting glows, glowing armor, UI indicators, among other things.
Posing
Hugs - Hug your companions!! Great for a quick and cute hug that doesn't require any coding.
Kisses - Kiss your companions using anybody animations! For best results cast the spells on a body type that matches up.
Replayable Romance Scenes - what it says on the tin. Romance scenes playable through casting a spell. These cutscenes play in new locations.
Stay Still In Camp and Play Idle Animations Everywhere - basically what it says. Once you switch from a companion to Tav, they won't run back to their tent. They also have some idle animations that are new.
Sit Happens - spawn chairs to sit!
Emotes - Poses and Toggle Walk - TONS of poses to use in the open world. Extremely useful for non-cinematic shots.
Cutscenes
Cut Scene Edits for Better Screenshots - A mod by Moxi that allows for cutscenes to be modified slightly - including forced clothing when you want something custom (shirtless Astarion, for example), removing Karlach's glow from her cutscene, among other things. Take a read through.
Musical Instrument Yeet - Sometimes the instruments pop up in a kiss cutscene and it is really distracting. Remove them with this!
Resources
Moxi's Research Directory - TONS of resources for finding character UUIDs, some copy-pastes ready to modify for scenes, cool locations like Private Camp Rooms and how to get there, Teleport commands. HANDY!
Google Spreadsheet of Tags - for scripting purposes.
Google Spreadsheet of Dialogue Lines - for finding cutscenes you want to script and play.
A few useful ScriptExtender commands.
An In Depth list of Osiris Commands - for advanced use.
LaughingLeader's list of Osiris Commands - another resource for commands.

Character Sheets and character creation →
Tumblr media
When creating a character, there’s a lot of questions you ask yourself. Whether it’s an original character or one you’ve been playing for a long time, using a character sheet to get to know your character better can always be a nice idea. With it’s help, you’ll be able to think about things you didn’t necesarily thought about, and ask some important questions to yourself that might activate your character’s voice, or help you to get your muse back with them. Everyone has their favorite character sheets, some people prefer to have a lot of questions, some others like it a bit more vague, so here’s a masterlist of the character sheets I found on various websites and found quite interesting, plus some other things that could be used to help you see, for example, how other character view yours.
Blank Character Sheet (+370 Questions)
Abridged Character Sheet (100 Questions)
Big-Ass Character Sheet
Character Creation Form
Character Sheet by Jody Hedlund
Creating a character Bio Sheet
Character Analysis Worksheet
100 Character Development questions for writers
Create a Character Profile
Character Development Worksheet
Original Character Bio-Sheet
Character Chart for Fiction Writers
A Character Chart By Charlotte Dillon
Fiction Writer’s Character Chart
Detailed Character Sheet
Character Sheet Template
Character Twenty-Question Worksheet
In-Depth Character Sheet
Character Worksheet
Character Interview Sheet (First Person)
Background Questionnaire (First Person)
Characters Perceptions (How do other people perceive your character?)
With these sheets, you could also try to find your character’s Jung and Enneagram Type or use the Moral Alignment tool. All of these things can be really useful to get a better grip on a character.
Then, if you’re trying to create a character, and do not have many ideas, or get stuck, I’d suggest for you to roam around TVTropes, which gives you a lot of tropes used for character creation. Maybe you could try to mix a few of these and create an original character?
Or, if you’re a skillful writer and know how to make your character different from another, make a list of characters in fiction you happen to find interesting and why. Try to keep it short. Then, maybe, try to mix and match things from two or three characters, take a character and change their backstory, to see what would change. Play with them to inspire yourself and create something new, original and truly yours.
Oh, and here’s a little guide to Mary-Sues and OCs, just in case you want to make sure your character isn’t going to become a Mary-Sue or a Gary-Stu
And last but not least, this article about building fictional character definitely seemed interesting to me, and is full of many other links that could guide you during the creating of your character and help you file one of these sheets.

Support Al-Afia's Recovery
Tumblr media
Current progress: $3,785/$60,000
This campaign has been shared by Sara (@/bsonblast).
Al-Afia was involved in a traffic accident that severely damaged her foot, leaving her with painful fractures and deformities. The treatment she has received so far has not succeeded in improving her condition. Her foot gas stopped growing completely and now Al-Afia requires specialized care and rehabilitation. Al-Afia is only 13 years old and she risks losing her foot if her family cannot afford to travel outside of Sudan to get her the care she needs.
Please support Al-Afia's family in their evacuation and seeking treatment for her. Your contribution and shares will help bring them closer to their goal.
