sometimes the moral of the story really is just "you cannot go back and what happened to you is going to be with you for the rest of your life. but it's still going to be okay" huh

"Married, huh?"
Malavai wrinkled his nose at the question. Not at the question itself, but at the fact that it was said around a mouthful of food. Sometimes he wondered what he saw in this man...
"Yes, Lords Jiko and Pahvor are getting married," he said, arms folded behind his back. As if he were giving a status report. He could practically hear the grin on Tzarin's face, and the question he knew the Twi'lek was swallowing for his sake.
"Don't you ever turn off?"
"I was perhaps wondering if you'd like to attend."
Tzarin swallowed the food in his mouth and rocked forward on the couch to sit up straight and set the sandwich down on the plate.
Malavai despised that couch. The blanket draped over it did little to hide the Black Sun graffiti sprayed on the surface. "I can't throw it out." Tzarin had laughed. "It was a gift."
A gift from "Skadge", the Houk that Malavai had only had the displeasure of meeting once, when the brute had thundered over to him to demand why he never told anyone about Tzarin's "durasteel nuts" and then blurting out that he had no idea the Twi'lek was "one of them Transistors" when Malavai had informed him that Tzarin had no testicles at all. Later that night, Tzarin had come home with bruises, a split lip, and a huge smile on his face, insisting that the two had settled their differences by "beating the shit out of each other".
Regardless of his personal feelings about the couch and it's source, it was Tzarin's favorite place to sit and work on his model ships, and Malavai wouldn't take that comfort from him.
"So they're getting hitched," Tzarin said, bringing Malavai's attention off the couch and back to the conversation. "And you wanna invite me. Aww, there really is someone under that uniform."
Malavai rolled his eyes. Tzarin loved saying that when Malavai was open and honest about personal and intimate things. In a way, despite it all, Malavai loved it too. It was a sign that Tzarin was happy with the relationship.
"Yes, there is. Would you like to attend?" Malavai knew he'd say yes, but even so, he was reluctantly hinging his own happiness on Tzarin's answer. A few months prior, the Twi'lek had attended a friend's wedding, one Malavai couldn't attend. A friend of his was marrying the captain and lieutenant of a high-ranking Republic military cell - Havoc Squad - and Malavai knew in his heart that he would be incapable of maintaining neutrality. He had busied himself with work that day, helping Talos Drellik catalog relics their betrothed masters had collected in their travels, but the separation still nagged at him.
"Yeah, I'll go," Tzarin said, standing up and hopping over the little table in front of the couch. "I'll have to rent a suit again... but yeah." He held out his hand, looking up at Malavai - he only came up to the man's chin.
Malavai took his hand, foolishly thinking he was only going to shake it, and with a small shout, was pulled down into a kiss on the lips. He recovered fast, and kissed back, his cheeks and ears pink.
He was hesitant to admit it, but Tzarin was surprisingly everything he wanted. Messy, but not filthy. Loud, but not obnoxious. Playful, but not rude.
And he was finally going to attend a formal event with him. No waiting at home for him to swagger in late with a stolen bottle of champagne, no sadly adjusting his tie before leaving.
Them together, at a table, on the dance floor.
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For being you. For seeing me. For everything."
".... for saying yes."
