Tiger Wood’s Interview
Next, we are going to talk about the interview with tiger woods after the last round. Before we get to the interview a little background, Tiger had a very difficult par 3 where he made a 10. This interview is about how mentally strong he was because he birdied 5 holes in the last 6 holes after he made the 10. He talks about how golf is not like any other sport. He explains how you are alone on the course and no one is there to help you, you just must figure it out for yourself. So, to play as well as he did in the last six holes, he had to pull himself together mentally and trust his swing. Tiger Wood has an amazing mental health game and it really shows in his interview because he was able to kind of laugh about shooting a 10 instead of really beating himself up over it.

Dustin Johnson’s Interview
The First interview we are going to talk about is Dustin Johnsons, the winner of the 2020 Masters. He gets very emotional during this interview, as he should, because he is the number 1 professional golfer in the world right now. You can see how proud he is of himself because of all the hard work he has put into his game and how much his team has been there for him. He has worked his whole life for this very moment. He shows great mental strength because he was able to let go of his higher scores from the past and really trust himself that he knows what he doing and that if he just does his best it will pay off. He is an amazing golfer and in a year of all this crazy he set a new record at the 2020 Masters at 20 under par. His score is what people will aim for as the years go on.

Lee Elder
Before we get to the interviews, I wanted to talk about Lee Elder who was the first black man to play in The Masters tournament 45 years ago. This year they honored Lee Elder. He changed the game of golf for many other colored men. His first year at the masters he shot a 74, 78 and did not make the cut. However, the score was just a part of a much bigger story.  Lee Elder inspired so many people and because of him Tiger Woods was aloud to do what he does today. Tiger looked up to Lee Elder being the first black man to play. These two had a close relationship and Lee would tell Tiger to just do the best he can. So this year at The Masters announced the creation of the Lee Elder scholarship at Paine College which is a historical black college. Lee Elder achieved a dream and a presence that left a powerful legacy.

Masters 2020
This last weekend was the 2020 PGA Masters at Augusta National golf course. This was the first the Masters was played after April 15th since 1945. It was a difference experience for the players. There was no crowed, they were playing in different weather, and with day light savings it started to get dark towards the end of the days making it difficult to see the ball. Dustin Johnson came in at 1st place with     -20 for all four days. Dustin Johnson played a great four rounds this year, leaving him five shots ahead of second place. One of my favorite parts of watching The Masters is the interviews at the end of the players rounds so the next few posts are going to be about some of these interviews.

Golf balls
There is lots of talk about what golf balls are the best but when it comes to what you should choose it is all about personal preference. There are lower compressed balls which tend to e softer and there are higher compressed balls which tend to be harder balls. Many beginners like to use soft balls to help them get more distance. Then more advanced players who have better technique and faster swings like to use the harder balls. When you are playing golf try to use the same type golf ball to help with consistency. When you are constantly switching up golf balls you are putting, short game, and distances will not be consistent. Pick a brand, stick with it, and you will see better outcomes.

Practice Rounds
When you are preparing for a tournament it is important to play a practice round before the tournament day. When playing in a practice round you want to have a notebook to take notes. These notes should consist of hidden hazards, what clubs to use to keep you out of those hazards, which way each green slopes, and any other notes that will help during the tournament. This notebook will be very helpful during the tournament when you find yourself in trouble on the golf course. It also will help with stress levels because you will have a few less things to worry about. Practice rounds are very important and help you get to know the course you will be competing on.

My Pre-tournament Routine
The day before a tournament I like to play a practice round just to get a feel for the course. During this practice round I like to only hit certain shots to see what clubs I need to hit so I do not land in hazards. Usually tournaments will mark on the course where the pins will be each day so I will practice putting to those marks. I wont usually play every hole or hit every shot, so I do not get tired before the tournament. Then the day of the tournaments I will arrive an hour before my tee time. I spend 20 minutes on the range warming up and then 20 minutes chipping and putting. Then I will get water, snacks, or do anything last minute to help me prepare. I always arrive to the first tee 10 minutes early to try calming my nerves and get mentally prepared. This is just the quick rundown of my pre-tournament routine.

Why I Play College Golf
Growing up I played volleyball, softball, soccer, cheer, and golf. I loved playing sports but once I got to high school, I could only play 2 sports that would not interfere with each other, so I chose cheer and golf. The reason I decided to go with golf was because I wanted to play a sport in college that would pay help me pay for my school. There are many women’s golf scholarships that go unused ever year.  There are also many coaches that struggle to find girls who want to play golf in college.  Overall, I wanted to play golf in college because I could play a sport I love and get paid to do it while also getting my degree.

There are so many amazing golf courses in the world, but I am going to talk about the very highly ranked ones. Next is Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey, this course is very well known for the architecture. This course has the look of a dessert venue surrounded by pine trees; it is a very beautiful course. Lastly is St. Andrews in Scotland also known as the Old course. This course is where the game of golf started. There are so many amazing courses in the world, and these are just a few.

Playing During a Pandemic
This last Monday and Tuesday I had a golf tournament in Jekyll Island, Georgia. Playing in the middle of a pandemic was challenging and there were many different rules we had to follow. One of the first new rules was we had to get our temperature taken every morning before we could warm up. Next, we were not allowed to take the flag stick out of the hole or touch it. This made it difficult for some people because if the ball was rolling to fast it would bounce off the flag stick rather than going in the hole which made it frustrating for some girls. Lastly, normally at the end of a tournament you hug the girls you played with but instead we were not allowed to hug. While these are just little details that were changed it felt like a whole new experience.

Golf terms Part 2
There are so many terms I thought I would share a few more wit you guys. We are going to start with a “draw” and a “fade”, a draw is when you hit the ball and in the air it starts right and falls to left, a fade is the opposite, left to right. Next we have a “marker”, this is a small flat item that you put down directly behind your ball on the putting green so you can pick up your ball and clean it off if you need. You can also do this when your ball is in the way of another person’s ball. Lastly, we have “up and down”, this is when a player chips the ball on the green and then makes the putt in one stroke, typically resulting in a par. While there are many golf terms these are some of the most used terms.

Golf Terms
There are many different types of golf terms that most people who do not play golf would not understand. There is “best ball”, this is where you play a round of golf and on every hole, you take the best score out of everyone in your group of on your team. Next is “par”, this is number of shots you are expected to get on every hole. There is also “birdie” and “bogey”, birdie is when you shoot one under the expected score and bogey is when you shoot one over the expected score. When putting you want to read the “break”, this is the curve the ball will take according to the slope on the green. Lastly, which is one of the most important words in golf which is “fore”, this is what you yell when you hit a ball and it might hit someone. You want to yell fore to warn the other people that there is a ball headed towards them. There are so many golf terms this is just a few of the main ones.

The Putting Stroke
While putting is one of the most difficult parts of golf it is the most important. Here are some simple steps to help you improve. First, we are going to start with the setup, you want to feel like your elbows are tucked into your rib cage at a 45% angle to the ground while standing up. Then with the putter in you hand you are going to bend at the hips until the club is on the ground. Next you always want to make sure your eyes are directly over the ball.  The path of the putter should not be a straight line, you want a small arc around your body. The putter face should open a little in the back sing, then coming back to the ball you want to square the face back up, and lastly in the through swing you continue closing the face. Remember you don’t swing with your hands, you want to use your shoulders to swing the club.

100 Yards and In
When most people are practicing, they usually go straight to the driving range and try to hit their driver as far as they can. What they don’t understand I the most important part of the game is from 100 yards and in, chipping and putting. The best golfers in the world are so good just because they practice chipping and putting for at least twice as long as they do on the range. Your putting strokes is about 50% of your shots on the course. The putter is the only club you need for every hole. If you practice you putting and chipping every time you are at the course you will notice a decrease in your scores.

Michelle Wie
Michelle Wie is one of my favorite female golfers, she won the women’s amateur Championship at age 13. At 17 she had already earned 20 million dollars in her rookie professional season; this was unheard or a female golfer. Due to injuries and swing problems in 2007 led to a devastating season. However, she came back in late 2009 won her first LPGA victory. Michelle is well known for her putting style; she sets up to the ball wither back flat almost parallel to the ground keeping her eyes directly over the ball. She keeps her arms tucked tightly to her sides and legs slightly bent. She has recently taken time off and got married to Jonnie West and had a baby a couple of months ago. I am hoping she comes back on tour to win a few more tournaments.

Is Golf a Sport?
The definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others. Many don’t believe golf isn’t a sport because they don’t understand the difficulty of the game or how much practice and dedication it takes to master the sport. Golf does fall under the definition of a sport because of the exercise and skill it takes to play the game. In college tournaments its usually two days of 18 holes meaning they walk about 12 miles and burn about 1800 calories on average. In a golf swing about 17 different muscle groups are used. Golfers need to be fit so they can walk for about six miles a day and hit consistent shots every time. Golf is played at a competitive level everywhere. These are some of the reasons why golf is considered a sport rather than a hobby or game.
