This is a sweet interview with Robyn Hitchock about his new book. Lots of talk about the music they opened the door for him at 13 despite being a public school kid. https://overcast.fm/+AA_xcC4x2Ow

Seeing influence play out in different ways is interesting. The same dub records leads Bauhaus to Bela Lugosi’s Dead and The Police to Walking on the Moon

The Foundation Trilogy has at its heart the idea that you can simply compute the future into a knowable shape. Much like the idea of history repeating/rhyming, it's mostly to give you a sense that there is a known track. That the collective irresponsibility of a dominant power structure isn't aiming you at a wall.

It’s not new, but it is always worth a chuckle. The people who insist they know their pet politician is not lying to them but everyone else is are the same people who insist copy pasted status save their data from social media companies.

“For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the Beatitudes (Matthew 5). But, often with tears in their eyes, they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. And of course, that's Moses, not Jesus. I haven't heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, be posted anywhere. 'Blessed are the merciful' in a courtroom? 'Blessed are the peacemakers' in the Pentagon? Give me a break!”

If you do not engage with the art you consume, it is generic enough to be procedurally generated. If you care about music and art in generally realize all the companies are obsessed with filling every inch of the internet with beige paint just engaging enough nobody notices https://harpers.org/archive/2025/01/the-ghosts-in-the-machine-liz-pelly-spotify-musicians/

Reading Mitch Clem's My Stupid Life anthology and listening to some mid 2010's punk rock. Stumbled on a commonality of exactly the sort of punk rock I like listening to. Basically if comes somewhere between D4 and Jawbreaker I'm in. Though I have an equally large softspot for goofy nerdy pop punk

I think one of the things that MS doesn't get credit for is that many of their products will save you from your own dumb mistakes. Moving from native backups to a third party tool we found that some vendors had trailing spaces in their database names, and the third party tool won't back it up while SQL just shrugged without a problem.
