Where Does Coffee Come From?
A colleague shot this photo of me (white hat) walking down the mountain of a coffee collective in Nicaragua. I often think of this place and how coffee is grown when I am in my local coffee shop. (Matagalpa, Nicaragua, 2007)

Why Was I Working?
I was actually on a vacation with friends and I was taking a call. My friend shot this and it reminded me that I was supposed to be relaxing. (Sedona, Arizona 2005)

Sitting on Tragedy
When I was doing work with “water, urban development, and the West,” I wanted to visit the San Francisquito Dam which failed catastrophically in 1928. My colleague and I had each picked up a stray piece of concrete as a souvenir. Before we left we felt like we should just leave it behind with the ghosts of the dam. (Los Angeles County, 2003)

What Happens When You Are Waiting for Sunset
I was on a ship in the Hawaiian Islands waiting to get a good sunset shot (none were actually good). However this throw away shot turned out to be one of my favorites (Hawaii, 2008)

Four Paws, Four States
Even though I know the monument is geographically “off” I couldn’t help but put Rob the Hound Dog in all 4 states. As always, he was a good sport. (4 Corners, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, 2005)

The Quiet Silhouette
I found this sculpture of Sandino to be powerful because it lacked physical detail as it overlooked the city. (Managua, Nicaragua, 2007)

Lazy Seals in the Bay
Whenever I see seals on the shore (or on the docks) I am amazed at their lack of need for personal space (San Francisco, 2003)

La Plaza de Fajardo
My fondest memories of this space were in 1978 when I was staying with my abuela and the fiesta patronales was going on. I have a deep affection for plazas throughout Latin America. They are often beautiful and centers of activity. (Fajardo, Puerto Rico, 2015)

La Casa de Ronaldo
There was a time when I was using fast food to teach about geography. I took a lot of photos of different fast food locations. This is one of my favorites. (San Juan, Puerto Rico 2003)
