We've all many reason to hate the episode. But we also need to remember Josh here. And his words. And Bryan's performance. Because I think, for me personally, this might just be the most important monologue of this season, no matter what else we'll see.

“I want more teeth.”

Tommy looked up at him with confusion from where he was resting his cheek on Buck’s thigh. There was a drop of come on his chin. “Is that feedback? Because I’m not too sure if I want to do that?”

“What? No. Definitely not feedback.” Buck ran his hand through Tommy’s sweat-damp curls. “Ten out of ten for what we just did, no changes required.”

Tommy pressed a kiss to Buck’s hip. “But you want more teeth?”

“Mm. Like a shark. I think evolution really fucked us up by only giving us two sets. I mean, we rely on our teeth to survive, right? And we’re supposed to survive the majority of our lives with the second set? And they don’t heal the way bones do? Evolution shoulda done better.”

Tommy hummed in agreement. “I feel the same about menstruation and childbirth.”

“Oh?”

“Nakamura could barely stand the other day because of her cramps. If we weren’t at the top of the foodchain, we’d have died off because we’d lose so many hobbled by their cramps to things that would eat us. Same goes for childbirth. Ignoring the fact that we are useless and fragile for like the first ten years of our lives, giving birth can be life-threatening. Massive evolution fail. Like two sets of teeth.”

“Like two sets of teeth,” Buch agreed and giggled when Tommy playfully bit down on his leg.

It would have been so easy for Tommy to completely disregard his comment, especially right after sex, but he didn’t; he listened and added his own thoughts and it might have been too soon for Buck to tell him that he loved him, but he certainly felt it.

The Switch had been put away for hours, Chris was probably already tucked into bed, the Pokemon Unite matches were well behind them for the night, but that didn’t stop Buck, who had his gloved hands in the sink, washing their dinner dishes while Tommy dried, from blurting out: “Squirtle is a mix between a squirrel and a turtle.”

And the realisation made him pause, because he’d collected Pokemon cards decades ago, how had that taken him so long to figure that out?

Tommy leant over and pressed a smacking kiss to Buck’s stunned cheek. “‘Ekans’ is ‘snake’ backwards.”

“Fuck off, no it’s…oh my God.”

“There’s a chonky pig-type called ‘Lechonk’.”

“How do you…”

“‘Greedent’ is a greedy rodent.”

“Yeah, I figured that one…”

“And ‘Muk’ is ‘kum’ backwards.”

“...with a ‘C’ or a ‘K’?”

Tommy shrugged. “With a ‘K’, but it’s gross and purple, so…we haven’t finished the dishes, babe.”

Buck had taken off his gloves and had started to work on undoing Tommy’s belt. “Yeah, but you got me thinking about cum with a ‘C’.”

“...the dishes can wait.”

Buck couldn’t help but notice how perfectly they fit together when Tommy wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled him in closer.

It was August.

Fucking August.

August was not the time for a Christmas-themed revelation, and yet: “The mom didn’t cheat on the dad with Santa.”

And because it was August and no one had a fucking clue what that meant, he received confused looks from everyone but Tommy.

“Uh? What?” Ravi asked.

“The song. The kid saw the mom kissing Santa…”

“But Santa isn’t real, so the kid saw the mom kissing the dad,” Chris finished with a roll of his eyes. “Duh.”

While Eddie feigned not knowing that Santa wasn’t real, Tommy said, “Oh, I get it.”

They’d all gathered at the Nash home for a birthday barbeque for Athena, and they all looked at Buck and Tommy like they were the densest adults they’d ever met.

“Really, you’re both just figuring that out now?” Hen asked.

“Oh. No. I was trying to figure out how Evan thought about it,” Tommy said and Buck cocked his head, curious to see how Tommy thought his mental gymnastics worked. “Athena thought the murderer was the husband after he found out his wife was having an affair with Nick, the poolboy, but the husband had no clue when the detectives had her come with them to make the arrest, right?”

Oh.

“But it turned out it was their daughter who knew about the cheating because she’d seen them on a date.”

Buck was so in love.

“Kid saw Mommy kissing another man – Nick – Saint Nicholas – Santa Claus…”

“Marry me.”

No one had ever loved him that much that they thought about how he thought about things. They normally just rolled their eyes and thought he was weird, and there Tommy was, so sweet and loving and caring and considerate that he figured it out.

“I’m serious,” Buck said after a moment of silence from everyone.

Tommy smiled warmly. “I know.”

“Wait, you’re really proposing because he understands why you thought about a Christmas song?” Chim asked.

“He’s proposing because I understand him,” Tommy explained and Buck couldn’t melted because he got him. “And yes, Evan. I’ll marry you.”

Buck is 100% the type of guy who would act like a big dog that thinks he’s small. Tommy would be sitting on a chair clearly meant for one person only and Buck would come over and just sit right down on his lap and start scrolling through sub stacks and Tommy would just have to accept his fate like “oh I live here now”

funniest thing this ep was the contrived henren drama being well it's kinda too last minute to get the holiday off of work (which, fair) but then we see eddie chilling in buck's hospital room for like. half of a random work day for Literally No Reason other than to make catty gay comments in the corner. but it's gift of the magi for who can spend halloween with their children between chim and hen. bobby you are the best worst boss in the universe i love you forever 🫶
