It has been pointed out to me that the weight gain of Lucas in the Christmas episode actually wasn’t all out of the blue - it started in the previous episode.

Season 3 episode 4 of “Alexa and Katie”, Unconscious Coupling.

In this episode, Lucas is seen studying hard for his exams to become a doctor. Really hard - in fact, for the whole episode he is in “The Zone”, basically focusing so much he doesn’t mind or pay attention to the rest of the world, and his parents do not get him out of his bubble because they want him to succeed.

But this results in two side effects. One, since Lucas is studying very hard all the time he neglects to shower or care for his hygiene, resulting in him having messy hair, old stained clothes and emitting a powerful stink (which is the regular joke of the episode). Two, Lucas keeps mindlessly eating food, including snatching away the food of others to munch while reading - and at one point he sees he has put on weight and ask his sister if their mum has shrunk the clothes recently. 

I actually forgot to mention something in my previous series of posts - in the Christmas episode you can clearly see Lucas’s belly button, it appears through the tight pink shirt. I just noticed it because here, you actually cannot see the belly button, either the white shirt is too thick, either the fake belly didn’t had any at the time.

In fact, I wonder now if this belly isn’t smaller than the one in the following episode… Now that I look at it I actually think it is smaller - it was more bulging in the Christmas episode. If my eyes are not tricking me, it means they had a nice attention to details, showing Lucas gained even more weight after his exams ;)
