Re-posting the translation of Cine 21 Korea (May 2012) interview piece excerpt/quote on Doona Bae and Hyun-Jung Koh. Written by He-Ri Kim. 

(Well, I admit the previous translation posted was rushed and so not that great. So it’s better I have this opportunity to re-do it)

A highly respected and well-loved actress, Hyun-Jung has used a few adjectives to describe what is so attractive about Doona, but all those can be summed up with only one word-“constant “( or consistent). This “steadiness” is not from the sameness that is rooted in laziness: on the contrary, it means that [Hyun-Jung is impressed] with Doona’s honest and consistent attitude in refusing to stay the same as an actor by exploring other possibilities. [Hyun-Jung is also talking about] Doona Bae’s special aura that astonishingly has not lessened at all during her 13 years of career in which she has worked in so many different forms of acting, which include TV drama series to foreign films. Koh says of Doona: “Doona is a little bit like…a poem, don’t you think?”

고현정이 동료 배두나에게서 보는 매력을 표현하느라 쓴 서너 가지 표현은 “한결같다’로 수렴한다. 그것은 게으름에서 비롯되는 지루한 일관성이 아니라 반대로 배우로서 정주하지 않고 계속 정직하게 모색하는 태도의 여일함에 대한 감탄이며, 13년간 일일극부터 외국영화에 이르기까지 천차만별한 작업 환경 속에서도 놀랄 만큼 닳아지지 않는 배두나 특유의 아우라를 가리키는 말이다. 고느:”두나가 좀… 시(詩) 같지 않아요?”

Summary:

Kiehl’s New York is in works to launch Limited Edition of Doona Bae collection: they are collaborating with Doona to launch the collection in October. It is also said Doona will be joined by the singer, Jason Mraz in this project. The plan for Kiehl’s Doona Bae-Jason Mraz collaboration was announced by Ms Sun Joo Lee, an executive vice president of L’Oreal Kiehl’s NY. In her facebook, Ms Lee reported of a meeting between Doona and a Kiehl’s executive at Kiehl’s New York Falgship store. She said that Doona was conversing with the executive for about an hour at the store. It is said Kiehl’s NY proposed the collaboration project to Doona because they believed Doona’s image and values would best promote Kiehl’s products. It’s not certain Doona Bae Collection would be available in Korea. More details of the collaboration will come out in September.

Question: What would you say about your muse, Doona Bae? What makes her attractive? First of all, I love her face which has never been under a knife for a platic surgery. I mean, any other actresses would have felt the need for plastic surgeries. Would they leave their faces alone? I think Doona can be what she is today because she loves her face [as it is]. She started her career as a model, so she knows how to control her emotions and is able to bring out [specific] emotion. And she does not behave like an actor (like a celebrity) at all. She has a star [inside her] ( she is a bright star), but she makes it shine not just for herself but also for other people around her. You have seen how she is friendly with the staff, making friendly conversations with them during this shooting. That comes from her confidence and kindness. If she wanted to use that brightness only for herself, I don’t believe the light (inside her) could not have shone so far and wide. *As always, this is a quick and rough translation done by me, a fan of Doona Bae 일단 한 군데도 성형하지 않은 그 얼굴이 정말 좋아요. 웬만한 여배우면 얼굴에 욕심을 부려보지 그냥 놔두겠어요? 자신의 얼굴을 사랑했기 때문에 지금의 그녀가 있다고 생각해요. 모델 출신이라 그런지 카메라 앞에서 자연스럽게 감정을 조절하고, 그 감정을 끌어내죠. 그리고 배우 티를 전혀 내지 않아요. 별을 가지고 있는데 자신만 빛나는 것이 아니라 다른 사람과 어울리면서 주변 사람들을 빛내요. 이번 촬영 때에도 스태프들과 허물없이 이야기하는 거 보세요. 그건 자신감이고 배려심이죠. 만약에 자신만 빛나려 했다면 그 빛은 그렇게 멀리 퍼지지 못했을 거예요. -얼루어 고원혜님 인터뷰 중
