alright i’m saying it. alec: a novel was bad. lazy writing, hollow character development, shoddy pacing….. there’s a reason di canzio is best known as a playwright, not a novelist.
im not calling him a bad writer, per se, but j saying that he should perhaps leave the reimagination to the experts (ie, the writers who have been bringing the same stories to life in fanfic for decades :/)
#im sorry if u liked it#i was just so disappointed#and realized i could have read the exact same story but 10x better in like any longform fanfic#so many things were so poorly done and j didn’t make sense#most of all it was very. forgettable#alec: a novel#maurice#maurice 1987

my life update is that i got a job i’m rly passionate about and moved into a beautiful apartment in a city i love but the most important update is that i started reading alec: a novel and 😐
ik reviews have been mixed so i didn’t have high expectations but. alec is literally a mary sue. he has no flaws. he’s super hot. everyone wants to fuck him. he’s extremely smart. he’s the definition of a mary sue self insert and i’m so annoyed. i feel like in a way writing alec with so little dimension and depth as a character does as much justice to his story as writing maurice and clive ending up together……. the prose just reads as unimaginative horny fanfic, and while there’s nothing wrong with that it’s disappointing when it’s published as a “reimagination” of the original novel……..
granted i’m only 50 pages in so hopefully it gets better but.
also can we PLEASE stop erasing alec’s bisexuality????? like u can be bisexual and have a preference for men?????? there’s absolutely NO evidence in the source text that alec is exclusively attracted to men the way maurice is, so can we please stop imagining him as such????
