Kinuyo Tanaka (1909-1977), an actress and pioneering Japanese director, was a genius known for her sensitive portrayal of women's lives in film. Her movies often explored delicate and complex issues in contemporary Japanese society. She became the second woman in the history of Japanese cinema to direct a film, in an industry dominated by men.
