AITA for trying to steal my travelling companion's ring?

I (41M) am in a fellowship (for reasons I cannot say) and was under the influence of something (again, I cannot say) and tried to steal my travelling companion (50M)'s ring. To my defense, I didn't actually want to steal the ring, I was just affected by things. I may have told him some good, legitimate reasons for me to have the ring, but I promise I didn't mean it. AITA?
