Nuno felt piece inspired by the science and art of Patricia Torregrosa, PhD. Once thought to be cellular waste, exosomes have since been identified as the body's messengers. Scientists believe they tell our cells what to do and one day may be used in targeted medicines.

This tailored coat is fashioned from 100% wool herringbone. It has a mock hood and invisible closures. It was inspired by a children’s book about being warm inside during the snowy winter.

Here are some of the finalists for Descience: Research on the Runway 2014.

45 teams of fashion designers and scientists were paired up to create a wearable look inspired by scientific research. Each look was featured at a runway show at the MIT Media Lab.

As Fashion Director and Co-Founder, I recruited participants, designed the process along with our Science Director, Patricia Torregrosa, and managed 45 teams remotely for eight months. We also put on a large scale fashion show at the MIT Media Lab, featuring 45 looks and accommodating some 500 guests.

A prestige panel of judges included MIT Professors Neri Oxman (Assistant Professor, Media Arts & Sciences, MIT Media Lab) and Dr. Sangeeta Bhatia, M.D., Ph.D. (Director, Laboratory for Multiscale Regenerative Technologies, MIT Koch Institute), together with Michelle Finamore, Ph.D (Penny Vinik Curator of Fashion Arts, MFA), Nobel Laureate Dr. Jack W. Szostak, PhD (Harvard Medical School), Gabriel D. Victora, PhD (Fellow at Whitehead Institute for Biomedichal Research) and Jay Calderin (School of Fashion Design, Boston, Boston Fashion Week, Executive Director). Team Cytocouture, who’s zero-waste, multi-use look was inspired by shape shifting cells, was declared the winner.

Nuno felted scarves for christmas, each one custom made for its recipient

Encuentros is a yearly meeting of the Chilean scientific community. In 2013, it took place at the MIT Media Lab in Boston, MA.

I was commissioned to design a custom fabric, to be fashioned into ties and scarves to commemorate the occasion.

I also designed an inspirational look, inspired by the DNA Micro Array, used by scientists to measure the expression levels of large numbers of genes simultaneously or to genotype multiple regions of a genome. The exuberant look is hand-woven from pipe cleaners and expresses both the painstaking work undertaken by researchers and the sense of possibility for scientific advancement and medical breakthroughs.
