Playing Ratatan makes me think of what I'd change if I had a patapon-style game. buckle in i have Opinions

instead of hero mode being repeated perfect hits, playing well gives you a chance for it. instead of just continuing the normal call/response, you instead repeat the previous response to activate it, which makes them do the same command but stronger. make it a few measures of being response instead of call to unleash their actual super-move, and it ends. there's no single hero, any squad leader can do it. aside from ones that trigger on different commands, it breaks up the 1-2-3-4 rhythm more frequently than miracles/djinns, and since responses vary by song, it gives variety to it. there are no miracles.

instead of fever it would be called frenzy. no particular reason.

on top of frenzy, if you keep playing REALLY well, you can choose to enter "double-time" by playing twice as fast. this is optional, and judgement is less harsh, but rewarding. Mania does not trigger during double-time, meaning it's a strategic choice to drop to normal time for those moves. this is just a risk/reward "ok hotshot you think you're good at this? PROVE IT" type of thing. double time is hard to keep constantly.

bosses panic during double time or when about to die, making their tells too short to react to in normal time. either you double-time or otherwise deal with damage.

patapon 3 had the right idea with lowering the number of health-bars, they just did it wrong. you still have 3-to-6 unit squads like 1 and 2 did, they just share health. equipment is by-member still. no weapon leveling or getting stronger via XP.

rarepons are unlocked for squads, not individuals. either there's only one level of each and they're just specializations, or the cost is reduced based on how much you level the tiers below and how many levels in that you have in OTHER classes (so you don't skip to mid or high tier ones without levelling low-tier ones, and don't only level a few squads and leave your robopons or whatever useless.)

cross-class unlocks were neat, let's do that again. get some variety in how you approach things.

there shouldn't be one specific effect you want with bosses for items.

bosses don't run away and ruin the pacing of the fight with like 10 measures of pata pata

bosses don't have completely un-dodgeable attacks or instakills or required fever-cancels, PATAPON 3 MINIBOSSES AND CIOKING I'M TALKING TO YOU

you get necessary commands before the boss they're necessary for. no more "well i guess i just take massive damage because i don't have the thing i need to avoid this attack"
