Summary

Mr. Mechanical embarks on a journey to uncover the source of the plot, and is put to the test when retaliation threatens him and his found-family. As the day for the Lich's awakening grows nearer and nearer, he has to put a stop to the mystery assailant's scheme, or face the Lich as it plunges the world into chaos. Complete at [Word Count] words, MR. MECHANICAL is a YA fantasy set in Terra 6, an agrarian Earth colony that lost contact with the mainland decades ago. A timeless curse and the Sophrosyne Pandemic

The planet we know as Terra 6 is cursed to never allow sentient life to flourish. The farthest it can be traced back is to the King mythology, seeing that the Lich is a manifestation of this curse, and we do not know how many civilizations rose and fell before it. Upon the creation of the Earth Colony, the curse tried to quickly dispose of them, blocking communication with Earth and turning humans against each other in a brutal war. They were supposed to wipe themselves out, but eventually humans overcame the violence and created a stable society. Then the Lich returned a second time with fury and rage, but was once again defeated through the hope and resiliency of humans. Soon humanity will face a third trial, the Sophrosyne Pandemic, and perhaps the curse will finally succeed in their demise. This planet was never meant for life. It will reject humans like the bad blood they are until none remain. 

The curse is not a god with a grudge, nor a cognizant being making decisions for the means of destruction. Much like the principle of evolution, the curse and it’s goal cannot be quantified into conscious decisions or masterminding from any higher power. It’s simply a mystical force of influence leading the planet towards it’s destiny. It’s an inevitability.

The Sophrosyne Pandemic

Under the leadership of Nikomedes and Boske, the crime syndicate known as the Alley Rats created an empire around the street drug Sophrosyne and it became the most widely used illegal drug on the planet. It is a liquid substance (administered through injection or pill form) extracted from a native plant that increases the levels of dopamine in the user’s brain to create a feeling of relaxation and euphoria. With no harmful medical side-effects, it was heralded as a remedy for anxiety, depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, general discomfort, the common cold, and just about any emotional ailment under the sun. The kingdom outlawed use of the substance, but it was near impossible to enforce since there were no obvious ways of detecting someone’s use. Rich business people used it to stave off work stress, students took it to perform higher in classes, nearly everyone indulged at least occasionally (there were even rumors of the king using it). For a while, there seemed to be no downside to it’s use. 

A few years after the Lich’s defeat, the Alley Rats begin producing a synthetic version of Sophrosyne to meet increasing demand. The new recipe was found to be toxic and highly damaging to the users, but by the time it was discovered thousands were succumbing to it’s harmful effects. Even then, knowledge was slow to spread and some were too reliant on the drug to care. It was predicted to kill hundreds of thousands.

Noa Schulsburg grew up living with her dad in the New Earth military base. Her father worked as a lieutenant in the army and she spent her days in their small apartment in the soldier’s barracks, or at school with the other military kids. She suffered from alopecia as a child and has since not been able to regrow her hair, and this made it difficult for her to bond with the other children her age. At the age of 19, her dad was killed during a training accident and she was almost thrown out of the apartment. Without a source of income, a looming threat of homelessness, and still in grief, Noa began to steal body armor and other equipment from the base and sell it to criminals on the black market. Their was a high demand due to the universal ban of weapons and body armor enforced by the government, and very quickly she attained the attention of high level organizations. The Assassins’ Guild paid her a large sum of money to sell bullet-proof vests exclusively to them, whereas the Alley Rats took keen interest in ammunition, and soon IFTA themselves wanted to begin a partnership with her. But her unexpected wealth raised some suspicions at the base, coupled with increasingly noticeable disappearing supplies, and Noa no longer felt safe. The Guild and the Rats, thankful for her collusion, stepped in to smuggle her out of the city and to a ship waiting to take her south. The vessel was commandeered by Asher McCracken, revered captain and feared pirate queen, whom Noa fell in love with and married. Now Noa sails the sea with her wife and lives among the riches of their bounty.

Some quick notes on the Terra Project:

Terra 1, Terra 2, and Terra 3 were all workforce colonies. This means that the only inhabitants were workers sent by corporations or governments to collect and send back resources. 

Terra 4, Terra 5, and Terra 6 were living colonies, intended to be a sustainable place to live. It was meant to mimic typical Earth societies and not to retrieve resources. 

Obviously, they were established in order of their number (usually about 10 years apart).  

Thousands migrants to the Terra planets were chosen by lottery, but a ticket could also be bought. This is why Terra 6 is incredibly racially diverse: Wealthy caucasian people (due to the imbalance of wealth in favor of white people) who were eager to buy a ticket and move off-planet had already moved to Terra 4 or 5. Fewer wealthy (white) people bought tickets and more were chosen from the lottery.

LaMountain means “of the mountain” which is a play on the Guild being in a mountain. Not sure about Oakland though.

Well, I have been named the deadliest assassin in the world, but no literal supernatural abilities.

Mthunzi is my mom, and I consider Roebuck to be a brother, and now I sort of have Mr. M and his kids too. I never knew my real family. I’ve lived without it just fine.

If only! I’ve always wanted one of those big dogs that look scary but actually are giant sweethearts. Mthunzi never allowed it though.

I’ve loved flowers since I was a child. I turned that hobby into a second job and now I’m also a florist.

Mthunzi, definitely. I also look up to my Camp- sorry, Guild friends. They all have qualities I wish I had. Like, I wish I was as confident as Leon, or as artistic as Sylvan. I also look up to Mr. Mechanical. He’s so smart. He can solve any problem but he’s never condescending or uppity about it.

Bisexual.

If you consider the Guild to be school, then yes.

Marriage is definitely part of the plan. If I marry Mr. M- which I hope I do-  then we’ll have enough kids without any extra work.

There are tons of petty thieves and criminals running around claiming they’re Phantomstroke. It’s sort of flattering. I’m waiting for one to try to mug me. That’d be hilarious.

I’m scared of finding out that I’m messed up. I grew up learning how to kill people. I feel like I’m fine, but they say that crazy people never think they’re crazy, you know? I’m not just Phantomstroke, but I don’t know how different we really are.

Depends on the circumstance. Casually I wear tank tops and shorts, sometimes a flower crown. On a job I have my own set of gear, and just in the Guild I usually wear darker colors and leather.

The Guild is where I’ve spent most of life and I love it there, Mr. M’s house is where the love of my life is and where I feel most distant from Phantomstroke, and my flower shop is where I really built something for myself doing something I love.

Yes and no. My immediate family was killed in the New World War, and my distant family, whom I don’t even know, must have been on Earth. However, I do have a family. Imani, Yusuf, and Em are my adopted children in a sense, and Oakland is just as much a part of it.

We’ve considered getting a cat- the kids certainly want one- but at the moment there’s no space for a pet. I’m sure we’ll wind up with one eventually, though. The same thing happened with the kids, after all.

I can’t stand people who believe they’re above others. We all have our issues, and we all have our strengths. Arrogance is almost always hand-in-hand with idiocy, as well.

I have a strong fondness for tinkering and working with machinery. *taps metal arm* Machinery is literally a part of me, and over the years I’ve become quite good at building things. I really get excited about creating and solving problems. Mechanics are so logical, but allow much room for creativity. Additionally, I’ve always been an avid learner and I enjoy discovering more about the world around me. I just learned the other day that a rare species of tree in the southeast has exploding sap! How fun is that!

Physically or emotionally? Well, it might not matter. Yes.

Not in particular. I respect and admire many people, but not in that way. Many of them I have no desire to emulate.

Not since before the war as a child, but I’ve learned a lot in other ways. More than I think I would’ve learned in school. I also made a point to teach myself higher math, science, and history, and like I mentioned earlier I’m always learning more just be experiencing the world.

Well, I sort of have that already.

Mthunzi/ The Inconnu

30 years old

Mthunzi joined the United Loyalty Coalition militia as a teenager during the first year of the New World War. As a soldier, she became experienced in hand-to-hand combat, shooting, living with just the bare necessities. She had a hardened temper and a tough attitude. After a year of service, she was discharged due to improper conduct when she deserted her post to help a small child caught in the crossfire which resulted in the death of a commanding officer. She left the ULC with nothing. She began to mug, steal from, and intimidate strangers for any food and money they had in order to survive. One day, she heard another man grumble about a thief who had stolen his only jacket and she offered to get it back for him, for a price. She was successful and she began to take on even larger jobs of thievery, aggravated assault, and finally murder. She operated by the pseudonym The Inconnu, which means the “the unknown.” Her military skills combined with her fierce nature made her especially viable for this type of work. Before long Mthunzi had made the gritty, war-torn streets of Leslosa City her hunting ground and there was a high demand for her services. One night after returning from a job, she caught a spunky pickpocket trying to steal her earnings. Although she was able to stop him, she was impressed with his talent (because she is not an easy target to steal from) and recruited him to her business. This was the start of the Assassins’ Guild. She and her partner sought out the finest talent the criminal underbelly had to offer and the Guild became a dominating force within years. After the war they moved into the mountain which is their permanent residence. During the fourth year of the war, she was walking through a smoldering, death-ridden village and discovered a young child unconscious on a stone past leading out of the town. She took him in, named him Oakland, raised him as her own, and taught him intensely in the ways of an assassin. Much later she also rescued Roebuck from his kidnapper and brought him to the Guild as well. Aside from her motherly tendencies, Mthunzi is tenacious, unyielding, brave, cunning, and powerful. She operates under the alias The Inconnu as she did during the war.

The Lich

The Lich is a power-hungry spirit who’s mythology spans hundreds of years into the past. While the means of it’s creation are unknown, the fables say it once consumed the minds of five great kings and brought the destruction of all life on the planet. It invades the minds of its victims, warping their thoughts and actions into bloodlust and savagery. When its vessel is killed the Lich is passed on to the one who brought about their death, and in this way it is able to find the perfect vehicle to bring about world dominance. The story goes it was passed from a traveler who stumbled upon a strange object to a member of the royal guard, then to the king himself who wreaked havoc and death on the members of his kingdom, then to four other powerful kings who attempted to defeat it. It gives it’s victims an otherworldly strength, a heightened strategic and tactical brilliance, and a craving for chaos and bloodshed. However, it is unknown how much of this comes from the Lich itself and how much was within the victim already, just waiting for a shadowy nudge in the right direction. Only a desperate alchemist was able to stop the Lich by binding it to a iridescent stone underground, but that was only after most life on the planet was irreparably doomed. Legend says the demon is still trapped in its prison, somewhere under the earth, waiting for an askew wanderer or foolish warrior to retrieve its essence. It once had the world in it’s claws, and will do all in his power to claim it once more. The Lich is indirectly the main antagonist of s3 via the Puppeteer.

Neither of them completely, But Oakland is a hopeless romantic.

Definitely Mr. Mechanical. He’s way more classy than Oakland. Oakland is the type to suggest a romantic, candle-lit, wine-in-the-bath-tub night.

Who’s behind the wheel more often during road trips?

Definitely Mr. M. Oakland can’t drive for shit. 

Who sets up the tent and who gathers firewood during a camping trip?

Mr. M sets up the tent for sure and Oakland gets firewood. It completely plays to their strengths.

Who hooks bait during a fishing trip? who catches more fish?

Mr. M has waaaay more patience than Oakland so he’s catching all the fish. Oakland can’t stand it. 

Who insists on learning how to ballroom dance?

Oakland. Mr. M doesn’t understand why but secretly he has a really good time (other than Oakland teasing him for tripping over his own feet. Not everyone can have that assassin coordination after all).

Mr. M goes all out to find the perfect gift for Oakland and often he makes it himself. However, if you don’t think Oakland brings him armfuls of flowers every year then you’d be dead wrong.

Mr. Mechanical definitely hums while he cooks, but Oakland just belts it out in the shower.

Both. All the time. But they also think its adorable.

The Assassins’ Guild

The Assassins’ Guild was conceived the second year of the New World War. Ravaged neighborhoods became a breeding ground for crime and criminal syndicates were cropping up on every street corner. With tension, fear, paranoia, and desperation racking the minds of civilians, there became a high demand for purchased thievery and assassination. Mthunzi, now an ex-soldier, used this as an opportunity. She took any job if the price was high enough and soon earned a fearsome reputation. She invited a few friends to join her and within the year they could live comfortably and they decided to keep expanding. They recruited the best criminal talent they could find from hitmen, to thieves, arsonists, mobsters, con artists, snipers, and became the most feared and formidable criminal organization in the entire world. The Assassins’ Guild is where the best of the best are. It’s every criminal’s dream to be offered admission Inductees are subjected to six months of physical camp where they train in hand-to-hand combat, stealth, and weapons use, after which they can be hired for jobs. Most members specialize in a particular field such as stealth or weapons. Wealthy figures who need a dirty job done quick hire through the Guild for the best killers, thieves, fighters, bodyguards, runners, snipers, explosive technicians, and assassins. All members are also paired up with another member that compliments their strengths, weaknesses, and personalities, and every member operates under an alias as well. Guild members receive free food and board at the Guild Headquarters and a cut of the earnings from their jobs, but they are also sent on missions at a moments notice and many are killed before they reach the age of 40. Currently the organization resides in a mountain outside of Gattervale, although the location is unknown to all outside the Guild. Long after the war ends The Guild remains the leviathan of the criminal world considered to be the most reliable and ruthless killers in the land. They are everywhere, they are nowhere, they are swift, ferocious, and relentless. They are only shadows but also wildfires and thunderstorms.
