I was rereading DH and I got to the scene where Harry walks into the Forest. There’s the line ‘besides him ... walked James, Sirius, Lupin and Lily’. Do you have any head canon for why Harry would refer to Remus by his surname?

Oh, absolutely, this is an easy one! Remus is always going to be “Professor Lupin” to Harry. That was their first relationship, and it’s the relationship in which they bonded.

We see that in all of Harry’s perception of him. A huge part of Harry’s “this is a competent, responsible adult to be respected and emulated!” perception of Remus is rooted in seeing him first as Professor Lupin.

I should mention that Harry doesn’t think of adults by their given name as a token of affection or intimacy. He thinks of his aunt and uncle as Vernon and Petunia, but he thinks of Ron’s parents as Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, his great mentor as Dumbledore, and his school-mum as Professor McGonagall. Sirius is Sirius because his transition from Black to Sirius came with the reveal of the truth in PoA. James and Lily are James and Lily because Harry never hears them called by any other name. But Remus is Professor Lupin. It’s not a name that denotes a lack of affection, but rather a more structured sort of respect.
