Work Text:
Waiting
She was put here not so long ago that she would forget how her life was. The Father, his wife and sons, the angel, the young boy, even the son of the youngest son.
All family and friends.
Now though, she sits here. She watches as people, and traffic go by.
There are days when the weather is exceptionally clear and bright, making it a delight to experience life on Earth while anticipating upcoming adventures or hunts.
There were days when all she could do was sit there and watch as the rain washed away the old and brought forth the new.
But she had been waiting here for a long time now. Alone with the occasional visitor.
There was Garth.
He and his family stayed in the rebuilt house that had once burned to the ground. It was nice to have someone around to talk to. Their Children (being adults in their own right) would visit to let their parents know the pack was doing well and they missed them. Yes, Garth and Bess stayed here with her. They took care of her. Garth often would come up with ways to keep her up and her hopes high that one day the last one would come for her. The last one of the family she was there for.
There was Rowena.
She had shown up when the younger brother put her there. He had summoned her and asked to put a protection ward on her. So, without a question as to why Rowena did as the younger brother requested. She also put an anti-aging spell on her so there would be no issues when the last one would come for her. Rowena occasionally visited, sharing tales of the witch's adventures with the brothers when her duties permitted, or nostalgia struck. Some good, some bad. Some with happy endings, some without. Rowena would always pat her before leaving and say, “Don’t worry yourself dearie he will come for you soon.” And with tears shined eyes she would be gone.
There was the Angel
Castiel would come and visit too. He would bring news of how her long since gone family was, and she would listen especially when the Angel spoke of him. The one she loved the most. That was the one thing they had in common with each other, they both loved Him. Castiel's son Jack would occasionally accompany him to express his affection towards her. Castiel would often just sit with her not saying a word but just watching the entrance hoping today was the day but there was nothing. And eventually even he would have to leave to fulfill his duties in heaven.
So, she guessed they were all really waiting for the last one to show up.
The Last Winchester.
It was a beautiful sunny day when it happened. Garth and Bess were standing on the driveway next to her when Garth suddenly inhaled sharply and started to pray to the Angel. And then he invoked a conjuring spell for Rowena. They arrived almost at the same time.
As she listened to Garth's explanation, she saw a man walk under the faded 'Singer Salvage' sign. He had the darker hair of his grandfather John, the height of his father Samuel, and the brawn of his uncle. His hair wasn’t long but not short either, kind of between his father and uncle (she remembered many times that the older brother threatened the younger brother with a haircut). She just sat there staring and hoping.
As the group turned to welcome or at least find out what brought him here they all became silent as if this stranger could make or break them. They had all waited so long. Castiel knew him but waited for his introduction. As did the others.
And then he spoke. “I’m Dean Winchester Junior and,” he turned to look at Her “I want to thank you for looking after my Baby.”
And she rejoiced. She had often heard her name from others but needed a Winchester to say it. While the others were actively showing their happiness of having a Winchester back with them the Angel Castiel just walked up to him and extended his hands, one with a set of keys and the other in greeting…
“HELLO DEAN.”

LIKE FLYING
LIKE FLYING
Jack said he wouldn’t interfere.
So, when Dean became impaled on the rebar, he knew he would die.
He said goodbye to Sam and closed his eyes one last time, the cries from Sam begging him not to go fading into nothingness.
Conscious again he was surprised. Not because he was still alive but because God, aka Jack had interfered, at least he thought it was Jack.
“Sam? What happened? Why am I still alive?”
They were whispered questions from Dean who was afraid if he spoke any louder the powers that be would realize their error and come back to correct the mistake.
***
Jack had pulled Amara from his being. And together they fixed Heaven.
Jack made more Angels to maintain Heaven. When he absorbed Chuck, he also absorbed Chuck’s knowledge. He made minor changes though. Angels could think now not just take orders. They could feel now. Jack had given them choice in how they worked in Heaven, and it seemed to make them happy. They were not allowed to leave heaven though. Jack had said ‘No Interference’.
When he decided to leave Amara in charge of Heaven to fix all that Chuck destroyed, he knew he made the right choice.
“Amara I am going to go now so, please take care of Heaven. I am leaving it in your care”. Jack smiled.
“And watch over Earth and remember I said ‘I’ couldn’t interfere with anything.” Again, Jack smiled.
Amara just looked at him quizzically. She understood that Jack would not interfere and nodded her understanding.
Jack only hoped she REALLY understood and then was gone.
***
Amara was walking through Heaven when Jack’s words came back to her.
‘HE’ couldn’t interfere, not ‘THEY’ couldn’t interfere.
She smiled…A Loophole.
Somewhere Jack smiled.
***
When Amara popped herself into the Empty, she had two plans.
Get Castiel out.
Get an Archangel out.
Castiel would be the harder one to get out. The Entity would not let Castiel go easily so she would try for the Archangel first. She had decided on Gabriel.
She just stood in the blackness of the Empty.
She didn’t have to wait long.
It oozed up in front of her. It took on Chucks appearance.
“What do you want”. It questioned.
“I need an Archangel to help keep Heaven up and running smoothly and an angel or two”. She said as humbly as she could and waited.
Nothing.
And she waited.
“I need the help of older angels to teach the newer ones.” She spoke.
Nothing
Finally in a last-ditch effort she said.
“I need the help keeping the souls where they belong. You know as well as I do that the Angels and souls power Heaven and without them Heaven falls. And so will the Empty”
She lied but it didn’t have to know that.
And she waited. But not so long this time.
“I will give you one Archangel and two Angels, and I have the last word on whether or not I let you have them.” It sneered at her.
She held her head high “Very well I will choose Gabriel, Balthazar, and” she acted deep in thought “Castiel” she finally said.
It smiled at her.
“Yes, Yes, and No.” it said.
“And why not?” She raised her voice but maintained her control.
“He made a deal, he chose to be here to save your Boy God.” It laughed.
But like most villains it didn’t know when to shut up.
“Tell you what, I will let you have a different Angel, or I will pop Castiel out to Earth, not Heaven, to stay on Earth after Dean Winchester Dies.” It started laughing but stopped.
“Deal.” Amara said with a frown and then said.
“There have been no more Reapers to die and take over deaths place. The veil is getting full can I at least get the old guy back to take care of it?”
The entity agreed only because Death carried no regrets to torcher him with.
“One last thing.” Amara said, “I want to see Castiel.”
“No” its voice boomed.
“I will see him and make sure he is whole in mind and body and not some shell of an Angel.” she said calmly.
“Very well.” Came its response.
And Castiel appeared at her feet. Not awake but even this was more than she hoped for.
She bent down to him and cupped his face and whispered, “You will see him again.”
As she looked at him, she thought she saw the uptick of his lips in a smile.
“Enough, Be Gone.” It smiled thinking it had won.
She left with Gabriel, Balthazar and Death. And she smiled.
***
Amara told the three she had retrieved from the Empty what had happened and her plan to bring Dean and Castiel together if not for love, then for friendship and the apple pie life they would talk about (Dean talked Castiel listened).
While Gabriel and Balthazar were on board Death was not. Afterall Dean had killed him.
Amara had to remind Death that it was the way Chuck wrote the story and that now they were free of Chuck and his warped story.
And so, with their plan set in motion, they waited.
And somewhere Jack smiled.
***
When it happened, it happened fast. Dean had died and Castiel was spit out by the empty to lay next to Dean.
When Sam looked up from where he had laid Deans body on the ground he saw Amara, Gabriel, Balthazar, and Death.
Death was holding a glowing white light in his hand and stepped towards Dean. Sam stepped between Dean and Death.
“No” Sam yelled.
Death smiled “No, you don’t want him alive?”
“What, but I thought…” Sam was interrupted.
“Thought what, that we would let him stay dead?” Death smiled.
“Sam please let him put his soul back before it is too late.” Amara said.
Sam looked around and noticed Gabriel and Balthazar checking on Castiel and once convinced the unlikely group was there to help, he stepped away from Dean.
Death returned Dean’s soul. And before he left, he spoke to Sam.
“I hope I don’t see you boys before it is your time…Really your time.” And he was gone.
***
Gabriel and Balthazar had finished checking on Castiel. When they stood up to stand beside Amara, they whispered in her ear that Castiel was intact and would wake soon.
She told them to go to Heaven and that she would follow soon enough.
When they were gone, she told Sam everything and why she did it.
Sam was in tears and even thanked her with a tight hug.
She hugged back. It was her first heart felt hug from anyone…even her brother.
When Dean and Castiel began to stir she turned to Sam and said her goodbye.
She did tell Sam that she saw a long loving life for all of them and was gone.
***
When Dean came too, he whispered “Sam? What happened? Why am I still alive?”
At the same time, he looked over to his side and saw Castiel.
“Cas? Cas!” Dean Cried.
As Dean stood, he helped Cas up and held him in his arms afraid to let go.
Cas, Cas, please don’t leave me again. I can’t be without you. “I”, Dean hesitated. Screw it Dean thought.
“I love you too.” Dean said and then he kissed Cas.
In tears at this sight Sam just whispered “Finally”
And somewhere Jack smiled.
***
They continued to hunt but not as often. And they picked up a passenger, Eileen.
One day during their travels they wound up at a carnival. And Dean took Castiel on all the rides, the last being the rollercoaster. Dean managed to snag the front car and proceeded to tell Cas how to ride the rollercoaster.
“Hold your arms up and scream on the long drop down.”
Cas held his arms out, but he did not scream.
“Well, how’d you like it?” Dean asked.
“It was fun” Cas said. A look of awe on his face.
After that Dean made it his mission to find a rollercoaster in whatever town they were in, just so he could see that look.
And it worked. And evert time Dean would ask how Cas liked it and Cas would say with the same awe every time.
“It was fun.”
Dean fell more in love with Cas, and Cas would watch over Dean as he slept.
Cas and Dean were inseparable, and Dean asked Cas to be his husband.
With whom they were they knew they couldn’t legally marry so they bought rings for each other and in front of Sam and Eileen they said their vows to each other and married themselves in the eyes of Jack (not God).
“So, what do you want to do for a Honeymoon.” Dean asked.
Cas didn’t answer. He knew what he wanted to do but wasn’t sure Dean would approve so he answered.
“Whatever you would like to do is good with me.”
“No Cas this is for both of us, now I will ask again, what do you want to do?”
Cas looked at his feet and said in a whisper.
“I would like to go on a rollercoaster tour.”
Dean smiled “Awesome.” he said.
That night after they made love and when Cas was asleep Dean opened his laptop and plotted out every rollercoaster they could get to in a month for their Honeymoon.
The next day they spent packing and getting the Impala ready for the road trip. They told Sam and Eileen about their trip and the day after that they were on two lane blacktop to their first Destination.
Two days of driving later they checked into their hotel (a nice one not the usual rat traps, thank you Charlie).
They rested that night and the next day they spent at the carnival. They enjoyed the food and the rides, but the ride they saved for last was the rollercoaster ride.
And this was their routine for each town and in between rollercoasters they would enjoy other things together.
The world’s biggest ball of twine in Cawker City Kansas.
The Eiffel Tower in Paris Texas.
Noah’s Ark in Williamstown Kentucky.
This is how it was for a month.
On their last rollercoaster stop they entered the park and enjoyed all it had to offer. As they walked up to the ride Cas asked.
“Do you think they will let us ride it more than once?”
“Of course, Cas, money talks loud.” Dean said with a grin.
They managed the front car again and Dean slipped the attendant some Cash so they could stay on for an extra ride without having to wait in line again.
After the second time Dean turned to face Cas and asked.
“Why do you like rollercoasters so much Cas.”
“It was fun.” Cas responded as usual,
“No Cas I asked why do you like rollercoasters so much?” Dean repeated.
Cas lowered his head and whispered so low Dean could barely hear it.
“It feels like flying.”
Dean closed his eyes and swallowed the lump in his throat.
When the Attendant released the bar holding them in their seats Dean told Cas to stay put.
Dean offered the attendant one hundred dollars to let Cas ride for thirty minutes nonstop.
The attendant could only give them fifteen minutes as the park was closing soon.
Dean took what was offered. He turned to Cas and said you have fifteen minutes to fly.
Cas smiled and started to scoot over for Dean to get back in the car. Dean held up his hand and spoke.
“Cas this is for you and besides my stomach can only handle so much rollercoaster. Enjoy it.”
As the rollercoaster started to roll, the tear Dean was holding back slipped down his cheek and he started to pray.
“Jack if you’re listening thanks. Thanks for everything. My life, Cas’ life, all our lives. We know it was you somehow without breaking your non-interference prime directive. But if you can please give Cas back his wings that would be great.”
Dean thought for a moment.
“We miss you. Please come and see us anytime. Love you.”
“Um Amen.”
And somewhere Jack smiled.
***
It took two days of driving to get back to the bunker where Sam and Eileen had a hot meal waiting on the Map table for them. They all sat, and Dean and Cas told them about all the places they stopped at and all the rollercoasters.
Sam and Eileen excused themselves for bed and Dean and Cas cleaned up the dinner dishes. Once done even they went to bed.
As they slept, they had a visitor. He laid a hand to Cas’ back and was gone.
When Dean awoke, he was hot and encased in black feathers.
“Holey Shit.” Dean yelled.
Instantly Cas was up.
As he tried to stand, he felt the weight on his back. He thought Dean was an octopus again.
It wasn’t until he saw Dean’s wide eyes that he realized the weight was not Dean.
As Cas stood up and flexed his shoulders he understood. He had his wings back.
“How?” Cas asked.
Dean smiled and shrugged his shoulders and gave Jack a silent thank you.
Cas smiled at Dean and disappeared.
Dean knew he would be outside testing and stretching his wings.
Dean passed Sam and Eileen on his way to the stairs leading out of the bunker and they followed him with concerned looks on their faces.
When they stepped out of the bunker their concern turned to joy and they understood the happiness on Deans face.
Cas was flying and beside him was Gabriel and Balthazar.
When the Angelic trio saw them, they all blipped out of the sky but soon returned to the bunker. All the Angels were carrying bags of gourmet breakfast foods from all over the world.
As Dean sat and looked at the faces around him, he sighed and thought ‘This is all he ever wanted. His apple pie life.’
And somewhere Jack smiled.
