Mozilla, in its finite wisdom, embedded LLM bots into recent versions of Firefox for the vitally-important purpose of… naming tab groups. Now, some users are noticing CPU and power usage spikes caused by a background process called Inference.

Ugh. Reminder again for Firefox users to visit your about:config page, search for the browser.ml.chat.enabled key, and set that to false:

If yours says true then double-click it until it reads false.

Doing that turns off the AI chatbot features in Firefox, but also the stupid new LLM tab-naming feature that's rolling out.

Somewhat crucially the judge ruled that the original scanning of books that were legally purchased and converting them to different document formats is fair use (so this doesn't implicate a whole bunch of archival projects). Instead the suit is proceeding forward only for the 5-7 million books that Anthropic pirated and then used to build out their library. Put another way this is basically a VERY big piracy lawsuit only this time the billionaires are backing Napster.

Actually for those who are interested in legal minutiae the two big ruling in this case (the fair use ruling and the class certification ruling) are both fascinating reads to parse down what's really at stake.

AI industry groups are urging an appeals court to block what they say is the largest copyright class action ever certified. They’ve warned that a single lawsuit raised by three authors over Anthropic’s AI training now threatens to “financially ruin” the entire AI industry if up to 7 million claimants end up joining the litigation and forcing a settlement.
