My BIGGEST pet peeve with graphic design discourse is that no-one fucking knows what "skeuomorphic" means and LOVE to throw the word around like they're geniuses

I'm going to show you examples of skeuomorphic designs.

See this phone icon? This clock widget? THAT is skeuomorphic design.

"But pasta, these are flat icons!" No. Shut up.

SKEUOMORPHIC IS NOT THE OPPOSITE OF FLAT.

Skeuomorphism is the process of having an object imitate the design of another object, usually in the purpose of making it feel more familiar to the end user.

In the context of the digital world, that means making the phone icon look like an old handset.

It means making the save icon look like a floppy disk.

It means using words like "button" or "switch" or "desktop" to refer to abstract concepts in these environments.

Skeuomorphic does not and has never meant "shaded icons and realistic textures".

Skeuomorphism can be applied to flatter interfaces just as much as it can be applied to super detailed, textured interfaces.
