it's not everyday that i get the urge to write updates about my country's political situation, but. well. since i haven't seen much international coverage about this, might as well do something, even if only three people read my post.

i tried writing a longer and more comprehensive post, but my grammar is not the best and i don't think i can explain much anyway, but i will link some news articles i can find and feels factual enough.

a warning: long post. much longer than i expected.

basically, what happened is this: on 25 and 28 August 2025, there were protests in Indonesia's capital city, Jakarta, about the parliaments' high pay and perks while the people sturggles to make ends meet. the protest movement probably wouldn't continue until today if not for the fact that, last night on the 28th, a motorbike delivery driver was ran over and killed by a police vehicle. the driver died on the way to the hospital. you can probably tell what happened next: everyone is angry. that same night, the police station was surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of ojol drivers (ojek online, or online-based, mainly motorbike ride-sharing and delivery apps that my fellow south east asian are most likely familiar with), demanding justice and blood.

today those same people, thousands of them, from different ride-sharing companies, marched together through the street of Jakarta, accompanying him and his family to his last place of rest. i love, love, love their slogan: Salam Satu Aspal (Greetings from the Same (asphalt) Road). right now, i feel like these drivers are one of the biggest, tightest and most loyal workers in the country.

ah, where was i — the victim's name was, is, Affan Kurniawan. he just turned 21, the backbone of his family. he wasn't even there for the protest, he was on his way to deliver some food.

the police and president tried giving (half-assed, absolutely out of touch) statements, but of course the people are already very angry. the current president is someone who was involved in the bloody tragedy that is 1998 Indonesia — i didn't vote for him. he's an army general, extremely out of touch, and surrounded by yes men, which is a disaster in the making.

our cops are... as you would guess cops are: cowards, bastards, high-and-mighty people drunk off power, corrupt from top to bottom. their hobbies include killing civilians, ignoring crime reports unless you pay them, and throwing tear gas to peaceful protesters AND everyone else around. yesterday a tear gas attack from them reached inside a train station that it halted operation.

anyway. i made this post for... i don't know. Affan was younger than my youngest cousin. i want to cry every time i think about him, everytime i think of his mother and little sister. and i guess — i want just one more person out there to know of this, that young, kind, hardworking Affan was killed by cops. that Indonesia is in a very turbulence political situation.

repeat after me, now and forever: All Cops Are Bastards.

rest in peace, Affan. and to my brothers and sisters who are now on the street fighting for our democracy, stay safe and don't let their propaganda divide you. don't forget you HAVE to come back home. and don't forget our actual target: the parliaments. do not let all this rage distract us from the reason that protest happen in the first place.

it started in Jakarta. now people from all over the country are starting to march and protest around their area's parlement buildings. any small win, any little change, i hope we can get it.

There’s also been an uptick in the ‘men and women cannot be ‘just’ friends’ rhetoric which I feel like is extremely dangerous and reflects the rise of fascism and sexism. Some of these stories of women feeling threatened by their husband’s female best friend have some merit and others are like “I feel angry that my husband still talks to the girl he grew up next door to and she and her wife are invited to family gatherings and included in family photos sometimes. Am I right to be suspicious?” No. No you’re not. I cannot imagine being you and living with that high level of stress and paranoia and constant torment and jealousy about your husband having a positive relationship with anyone who isn’t you.
