“And then I found out how hard it is to really change. Even hell can get comfy once you’ve settled in. I just wanted the lonely inside me to leave. No matter how fucked you get, there’s always hell when you come back down. The funny thing is all I ever wanted I already had. There’s glimpses of heaven in every day. In the friends I have, the music I make, the love that I feel. I just had to start again.”

Illustrations from the book A Monster Calls. It’s is a fantasy novel written for children by Patrick Ness illustrated by Jim Kay. Set in present-day England, it features a boy who struggles to cope with the consequences of his mother’s terminal cancer. He starts having nightmares about a monster every night since his mother started her cancer treatment.
One night when he wakes up, there is an actual monster right outside his window. He is repeatedly visited in the middle of the night by this monster who tells stories. It was from an original idea by Siobhan Dowd. Dowd was terminally ill with cancer herself when she started the story and died before she could write it. (Source)
